Ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) relies on fibers to achieve tensile strength and toughness. Fibers can provide different properties based on surface properties, their aspect ratio, geometrical properties such as twists, striations, bends, or other factors. Test methods to measure UHPC tensile properties can be classified as direct tensile methods, flexural methods, or splitting methods. This presentation will discuss UHPC tensile properties that impact structural performance, and three tensile test methods used for UHPC, AASHTO T 397, ASTM C1609, and FM 5-626 Tensile Strength and Relative Toughness of Ultra-High-Performance Concrete by Double Punch. The effects of sample fabrication, data analysis, and interpretation will be discussed and how they could impact assumptions used in structural design.
