For me the biggest negative to fiberglass is longenvity and weight. Aluminum is much lighter, so if you are worried about a puncture anywhere, like the forward facing parts of the hull just increase the thickness and you will get to a thickness that is nearly indestructable and second in twenty to thirty years i will trust that aluminum hull like her first day out, where the fiberglass under heat and cold eventually starts to break down, and the end is unrepairable.

I actually prefer how aluminum reacted to the metal weight. The glass shattered and would have been infiltrated with water whereas the aluminum had one puncture hole.

Another great thing about aluminum yachts is they can carry much more fuel than glass boats. A really great feature for long distant crusing. They also weigh less, less strain on those big turbo diesels.

For one, aluminum has 10x the amount of strength. If you put the boat up on the rocks (aluminum) it wont do anything, not that you would. Also if they but that fiber glass on water and the aluminum on water, the fiberglass would leak in that entire part that it was damaged. Sure it is a better ride, but that is because it is flexing and it will have a huge crack within 10 years unless you baby it. Also you put a super thin sheet of fiber glass on boats. that was like 1 inch thick of fiberglass they were using, as of the fiberglass on your boat is about 1mm thick if not less. Sure aluminum is thrown around but that is why they invented ballast. If you want a fiberglass boat to last you need to baby it to make it last for a while, aluminum you can beat up yet it will last forever. Aluminum is a lot lighter so the fuel price alone is awesome. Fiberglass needs to be coated with gel coat (MORE MONEY) witch weakens it and it is required to go on and stay nice. Also the gel coat makes it oxidize so you have to spend hours weakening the fiberglass even more. If you go up north in extreme conditions you will see no fiberglass boats because they just don't hold up. Aluminum is 100% recyclable and no toxic fumes. Fiberglass destroys nature and is toxic. No wonder they are gaining market share every year and will soon take over fiberglass.

I'm in the market for a new boat right now. Looking for a 16 foot flats skiff that run in 6 inches on plane and float/pole in less. After much reading and research, I knew aluminum was the way to go. Hard to beat a good welded aluminum boat. The one I chose (I don't have it yet) is an MV hull with a tunnel and sponsons. It will probably float in 4 inches of water and get up on plane in 6-8 inches with appropriate prop. This boat will cost less than half of what a comparable glass boat would cost. Aluminum has it's disadvantages, but for me, the positives far outweigh the negatives.

Fiberglass is very time consuming and there is too much room for human error with the odd batch not mixed correctly, air bubbles missed that will lead Osmosis down the line ( boat cancer ). You cannot beat alloy, can come pre cut on a pallet with fold lines already marked out, simply fold then tack together then weld and you have a boat. No cutting, vacuum bagging, rolling, mixing, any prep, or huge amounts of joins needed like fibreglass, using peel ply for smoother surface ( more money ) but the biggest advantage of alloy is the finished surface that has plastic on one side you peel off once finished. You make a boat out of fibreglass and don't fair it with bog then paint it ( more money ) it looks like it's made of play doh... I agree fibreglass is quieter and smoother but that's because the boat is flexing in all the week spots that will I guarantee will start cracking within 10 years. I have worked in both industry's and currently building alloy boats and I can tell you I much prefer working with alloy. You can do a quick sand or use an acid wash on alloy to bring it back to new, its even possible to bring it up to a mirror shine. What do you do when you e glass boats has chips or faded paint etc? You sand the whole thing down, meth wash it for example, prime, then top coat ( MORE MONEY!!! )

How do fiberglass boats compare to steel boats? For a 45 foot Yacht aluminium is out of scope if you can't afford it. It's also difficult to repair if you are somewhere in the middle of the pacific on a small island with no repair shop with the right tools. So only fiberglass, steel and wood is left. What is better in this scenario? Especially if you are in the middle in the water and have a hole. What can be repaired easier in water?

Epoxy? or polyester, isothalic, ortho, or vinylester. These guys are using vinylester. The main reason is really for future and some already existing polution laws. Print through is a major problem with infusion molding, laminations tend to be 3-7% resin starved which doesn't effect stregnth so much it helps with weight reduction but causes cosmetic issues.

I absolutely MUST take exception to your claims, here, concerning fiberglass boats. To begin with they are NOT formed with any woven sheets of fiberglass-- the vast majority are created using a slurry of fiberglass fibers and epoxy shot into a mold. Your fabulous sheet of high-tech fiberglass is light-years ahead of fiberglass boat construction. That new extra thick woven fiberglass stuff you showed would be perfect to cover a wooden hull and decks-- that would be one tough boat! But, really, fiberglass boats as they are currently manufactured are brittle, easily punctured, and they burn HOT and FAST if ever set alight. Aluminum does not. The entire premise of this video is not based on reality.

Other than electrolysis, Aluminium is better in every way. Cost, recyclable, weight, strength, not flammable, customizable, maintenance, can be used for heat transfer, repairs easily, natural. Fibreglass should be banned there is no need for it. Look at wind turbines and how much waste they produce, but fibreglass is required otherwise lighting and other factors would be an issue. All boats should be made from aluminium. The amount of degraded fibreglass boats and recreational vehicles that plague the land and water now is terrible.
