Field operation is the biggest reason I keep up my tech license for 30 years. Before retirement I ran a few CERT groups in Southern California. I miss doing that as there is very low interest in group preparedness.

Just got my license a few months ago, hopefully will upgrade to general before field day. Not a huge deal if I don't though, thankfully my local club is doing a limited social distancing field day, and I can just operate with their call sign. (My god if I have to say social distancing one more time I'm going to explode) Anyway, they are going to set up at a local park and the club owns a trailer full of stuff. It's also going to be somewhat of a picnic, we will discuss that at a later date, probably on the last net before field day. Hope to hear you out there, good luck! 73s from W8IJC

When you asked "is this a good thing" I was thinking actually yes. And this pandemic is a perfect example as most of us would be operating from our homes and/or as individuals in a real emergency and that's what Field Day is for. Unfortunately it has morphed into a computer/electronics heavy and software dependent (as opposed to paper logs)

The ARRL would say US Field Day is the world's biggest event. I wonder if they cross checked their stats with their EU, Japanese, Russian, Indian or Chinese counterparts. I think your idea for how to run field day is exactly correct - off the grid is how field day should be IMO.
@KB9VBRAntennas

This comment got me thinking so I did a quick search. There are approximately 760,000 amateurs in the US and 70,000 in Canada; the two biggest countries that participate in Field Day. By comparison, China has 90,000 hams, India 22,000, and Russia 24,000. If we look at the EU, the three biggest countries are Germany 63,000, Spain 58,000, and UK 75,000 (the UK is technically not in the EU but we will include it for the purpose of discussion). One thing that sticks out: there are more amateur radio operators in the US and Canada than the other countries mentioned both by physical numbers and by percentage of population. By sheer numbers you will have a greater level of participation. Anecdotally, the bands have a higher level of activity on Field day than on other International DX contests like CQ WW, ARRL DX, or even Sweepstakes. I think its safe to say that Field Day is a pretty big deal.

I usually help out setting up all the antennas for my club. I don't like to operate at field day. I do get grumpy sometimes with the bickering about how to set up stuff. I have been a commercial fisherman for 26 years and I had a guy tell me I was not tying a knot correctly. LOL, just this year alone I have rigged over 4 miles of rope for my lobster traps.. .... Unfortunately I will be staying clear of the rona and not helping out.

I plan on getting my mobile fiberglass mast out, string up my End Fed Dipole antenna, and running on my Hurricane generator. Also it is gonna be hard for me to do the 100 watts and a wire Spring Tuneup and the June VHF Contest concurrently. I am not taking too much inventory on the June VHF contest though as all I have is a EFHW ment for 75m that can tune 6 and a quarter-wave for 2m.

Do have any worries that your tree covered camp site might make your solar array ineffective? Do you use your vehicle power to recharge batteries while in the field?
@KB9VBRAntennas
4 жыл бұрын
It's a concern and I know I won't be able to rely on the panels to recharge the battery. Judging by the orientation of the site‚ I should get a couple hours of partial sun in the morning.My plan is to run the battery all the way down and then I'll have to stop. Main battery is 50ah Lithium Iron Phosphate and I have a smaller 12ah LiFePO4‚ so I have quite a bit of capacity‚ especially if I drop my transmit power down to 50 watts.

Can APRS be used in a simplex form (sans repeaters) as a digital mode for Field Day? If so, is there any standardization of how to do so, like another frequency or path settings?
@KB9VBRAntennas
4 жыл бұрын
Traditionally APRS has not been allowed as a mode for contacts during field day. But I read the rules for this year and it's not specifically prohibited. But you are unable to make contacts via a repeater or digipeater‚ so it would have to be point to point. I think in order to make a contact count‚ you'd have to send an APRS message to the other station with the exchange information and receive a similar message back. An automatic acknowledgement wouldn't be enough to qualify as a 2-way contact.
