Having sat in a factory fresh Mini Ritz in the showroom back in the day - it don't half make me feel old seeing one in this state!...Sadly Austin Rovers Metallic finishes proved to be quite porous and these mid eighties Mini Special Editions - Ritz, Chelsea and Piccadilly deteriorated rapidly and survivors are rare. Even though its categorised the Ritz is very much worth saving - that its survived at all is a miracle. 👍

My father was a mini fanatic, owning a traveller and countryman estates, as a kid I was not impressed 😅 as my friends dads owned big saloons. But in 1975 I purchased a 1964 mini saloon , green with a white roof, and I loved it, surprisingly. Two years later off to the scrapyard in the sky she went after several encounters with the police, but my mini got away each time 😅 if I could only tell you the stories, really quite funny. I am not an expert on Minis but the Ritz is obviously more original than the black/yellow one. Having said that it is the sort of thing many people did back in the day. Replacing the shell for such a small car was quite easy to do, you could do it on your driveway, if you had one! These days there is 'Mini heritage' so I suppose in theory you could get a shell much closer to the original if you so desired. Some interesting tapes in there, I think the only ones I am familiar with would be 'The Doors', 'Led Zep' and 'Pink Floyd' which I tend to play on a Sunday afternoon (Pink Floyd that is in CD form). Thanks for the video Claire and Elton.👍👍

The black mini shell appears to be an early 70s Mk3 model with the original 70s seats! I guess you could re-shell as a Mk1 with the identity, but not sure whether the donor car’s identity could be recovered (likely not sadly - but might be ideal for a race car project)

Great video. I hope that the older mini isnt brought at auction just for its number plate but personally I'm not hopeful. I've got this horrible feeling it'll end up on some awful electric suv. Also I've never heard the use of the word "tyne" used in connection with fork lifts before. I've always thought they were called forks, therefore leading to the machines name, forklift. I'm not saying I'm right though, every day is a school day!!!

The black Mini is a MkIII shell, doors, switch panel and remote gearbox link to a 998cc MKIII era engine and box. Then we get into the real hodge-podge mix that makes this car up.... The dashboard top and gauge binnacle is from either a Clubman of the 70s era onward or a Mk5 Mini (the era of the silver car). The bonnet badge is from a MkII....but is on a MKIII or later bonnet. The boot badging is MkIII in that even though the Austin Mini used that script and style of badge for the MkI, it would say Austin Seven, not Austin Mini in 1961. The doors brought out from inside the car are likely from a MkII, or as that car is badged as an Austin, may indeed be the original MkI doors....but would take a lot of faffing to get to fit and look right on the MkIII shell because they are not the same size. (The difference between Austin and Morris Mkl Mini doors is that the Morris ones have a pull-cord arrangement instead of the lever-action one in the black cover near the door mechanism. ) As to restoration? Well, as with any project, the sky's the limit and only restricted by the size of one's bank account. Over here (NZ) I've seen worse than that come back from the dead....but not economically viable as a "do up and flick" restoration to be sure. Most restorers would look at the structural areas - firewall, A,B and C pillars, roof gutters, sills (inner and outer) and subframe mounting positions - and if they are ok, then it's worth replacing the floor pans, boot sections, nose clip and valances. I've now got a little project myself - a 1977 Mini. She was running and driving - and still does...just not on the road any more...er...... It's a good car structurally and I've spent a fair bit of cash to get her mechanically (and suspensionally) sound, but sitting in the drive while a relative's furniture has kept it out of the garage has not done it any favours and there are a few spots of rot (and previous owner's bodging) that have gone "whoopee!!!" and had a field day with a few areas that have cropped up in the timeframe....so now she needs more of a restoration than what she initially came off the road for. No matter - furniture is going in a month and she'll be back inside where I can take bits off and get at what I need to. The little silver one had a great sounding little engine - although valve bouncing is never a good thing to do to an A-series! It may have been the camera, but I saw nothing on that which spooked me - and I am easily spooked. The passenger's side is obviously the worst and I'd be taking a good look at the sills and on the front wings where someone has shaved the panel seams. The biggest concern would be what is behind that foam on the engine side of the firewall as the original sound-deadener had a habit of filling up with water and rotting it out, let alone several lumps of what looks like foam mattress! The scuttle panel at the lower edge of the windscreen and the panel underneath the rear window have some rot, but nothing that requires serious surgery from the video. Doors for the MkIV onward are a dime a dozen to replace too. However, the nose cone looks great and the original Ritz-only pieces are still there and in reasonable fettle. Finding an original Ritz now is a rare thing - especially if you can find the centre caps for the bespoke alloy wheels.... All-in-all, quite a good little find there. Elton is correct about the black car - the 1275cc engine that is listed as being part of the car's credentials was still a twinkle in the eye - not appearing until very late in the MkII / early MKIII era. With Minis being sought after in any state in the UK (from what I have heard) I reckon they will sell well. I'd love to have a look over the Ritz as it was a version we never got down here, but it's a bit far to travel for me to see the wee beasty! I'd love a set of the cloth seats from that era - high back with headrest and a good thick material cover. Way better than the vinyl bucket seats that can leave one with third degree burns in the New Zealand sun! All the best

Worth saving? I suppose nostalgia says they are but personally I wouldn't bother. The very first car I ever bought, when I was 17 (about a thousand years ago), was a 1966 D reg Austin Cooper S, back in those days they were the car all the young guys wanted, kind of like a 'hot hatch' of it's day. I hated mine...lol No matter what anyone tells you, they were not fast, they did not handle particularly well and they were bloody noisy and uncomfortable, even at 50mph they felt as though you were doing 100. They may look cute but they're bloody awful (sorry to the lovers, just my opinion).
