This was very insightful, Ahmed. I can totally see where you're coming from. It also raises questions I hadn't thought of before. It isn't fair what happened, but I dont think you could have done better. Your performance was brilliant. Truly. The backlash was completely unwarranted and it's not right. It breaks my heart (as much as it's human nature and I think most of us would feel the same) that you feel you "played the game like an amateur" when it was a brand new game in so many ways, so *nobody* was a pro. The idea that such a young actor, instrumental to creating a character in a way none of us had seen, could be chewed up and spit out that way... It still makes me angry and disappointed in our industry and the fandom. I so hope this journey brings the joy and wisdom you have deserved for so long.

No one is perfect. No one gets it all right. Lucas for instance, doesn't talk much publicly about anything as far as I can tell, so its no surprise he didn't promote you as much. (I wish he did. I enjoy the interviews.) Not everyone really did move on: Jake Lloyd was wrecked too. This in itself disturbs me terribly, that (as another commentator said) in a way you two were the most vulnerable so they went for the throat to take out their outrage that Lucas put HIS vision, not THEIR vision, on screen. There is no way you could foresee it. To foresee no one could meet that many years of hopeful buildup, that's one thing. At most I would've expected some to be disappointed. But the sheer viciousness? No. I still believe in you. :) You created an all new character with an all new personality. While you had help doing it, that part is you and it was great. I loved him, he made me laugh, and I think the film needed that contrast to the way too calm Jedi and apparently calm if sad Queen. Gollum already had a personality, they just had to adapt it to film. He did a fine job of it and added some of himself no doubt but he wasn't starting from just square one. I learned important things from Jar Jar. No matter how out of his depth he was, he somehow never gave up. (For instance Jar Jar a General? He had no clue what he was doing but he DIDN'T run away! True courage - because he was surely terrified!) So I at least Thank you very much for Jar Jar. He made a difference to me. And he wouldn't have been him without you.

In Jar Jar, you and George Lucas created a completely alien characters who children can relate to because he's funny and child-like, and adults can relate to because he is an outsider and underdog that sometimes we all feel that we are. There is nothing "Black" about the character. I was calling out the racism of fools trying to assign "Blackness" to Jar Jar since 1999, and will continue to do so for the rest of my life. MUCH respect to you Mr. Best!

I was born in 89, so when The Phantom Menace came out I was at an age and it was a time where it was kind of just another star wars movie, i wore that VHS out. Now in the theater, as a kid of 11 I loved the character, my mom thought you added more to the movie as well if my memory isn't failing me. Through high school I never shared this with people and at some point I just kind of started to believe I wasn't into the character either. Its only recently with all the nitpick culture in youtube critics that its really become kind of clearer to me that I don't think I like fanbases when they get all heated about a franchise they love. I had a younger co-worker who had only seen the movies in the order of the episodes, she told me that her favorite character in the entire series is Jar Jar, I kind of felt that old part of my brain start up again, the one that goes "Really?!... Jar Jar...?! Out of everyone?!". and then she said she had gotten hate from star wars "fans" her whole life. Just because she liked a character in a movie. I'm just of the opinion now that these are nice family friendly movies, all of them, and I consider every one of them part of the canon and each one adds to it in some way. Thanks for adding to my childhood, honestly! I also don't think you should blame yourself regarding your performance and what the character added, George Lucas has never been known has a dialogue writer and I think people kind of forget that R2 and 3P0 offer near the same brand of humor you gave in your performance. they also had the benefit of having each-other to play off of though. George is also notorious for giving actors little direction, and in terms of helping actors from star wars: Even the actors from the original trilogy didn't really get amazing careers, it was mainly Harrison ford. Even that was happenstance that George happened to want him to play Indiana Jones over Tom Sellick. I like George, but he has never been a palm squeezing people pleaser, and sadly I think in this case it did you a disservice in a burgeoning industry that Peter Jackson was sadly, just more able to see on the horizons. (another edit...) P.S. My drummer in the group i play in also drums beneath 4 Jar Jar banners that we found sitting in his basement from all those years ago when the movie came out. If the one man show ever makes it to Winnipeg you have at least one guaranteed ticket! :P (edit)...More memories came back... I even had a Gun Gun Lego Jedi that I made a robe for, yeah I realllly liked Jar Jar...

Well I personally think Jar Jar character was NEEDED in the Star Wars saga. I’m not a Star Wars fan at all but growing I seen bits and pieces and cartoons of it and your character was the character I loved. Why I say “needed” is because all trilogies/sagas should have that one funny/goofy character that brightens the mood and show some sort of entertainment. I think that notable character Jar Jar (regardless of our opinion on him) will be remembered as a good character of Star Wars. The Fame subconsciously is there believe it or not. So credit will always be there regardless of what anyone’s opinion how this stand out character is like.

Met you at Star Wars Weekends in 2014 and I was very happy to tell you that I recognized that you were the first to create a fully realized character in motion capture before Andy had a go at it. And of course you were very modest about it and a true gentleman. I still view Jar Jar as a monumental achievement regardless of what the haters say. Looking back on history, Leif Erickson landed in the Americas first, but Columbus got all the credit. Sometimes pioneers dont get the credit they deserve until much later in life. Please never forget that your efforts made so much of that craft possible, and you do truly deserve so much credit for it. You still have so many fans in your corner. Love and respect to you sir.

I go on this same rant every time I hear people say Gollum was the first character of that nature, or similar. Feel however you want about Jar Jar Binks, but recognise the character's place in cinematic history! Not taking anything away from Serkis AT ALL, a tremendous actor whose characters have massively resonated with audiences worldwide, a guy who is deserving of all the praise he receives for his performances, but if you're going to have a conversation about pioneers you can't just erase the work in The Phantom Menace.

Hi Ahmed. I am loving this series, a hard as it can be to hear you speak about defeat. It's important. I don't want to detract from Andy Serkis' work. I really don't. He's done great things for MoCap acting. But you're not wrong; his career came after Jar Jar. Had you been celebrated for the technical work the way he has been, I wonder what would have been different. In any case, I hope that going through this process, that doing your show, and by being vocal, you get the outcome you desire. Whatever that is. I know I'd love to see more of you in film. And I'd love to see Jar Jar get some closure.

As a person from the outside I think the main difference is Andy had a character that was already established from books. Sure it's not exactly like the book but fans of the books also like the movies. In the case of star wars George was expanding on the lore of a story and instead of going fowards he went in to back story. So everything in the fan's minds was settled on how things ought to be. And when he decided no, Anakin as a child, virgin birthing him, and weird prophecy and stuff, they needed and easy target to vent. So they picked the two weakest things to abuse. The comic relief from a pretty sad story, and the child actor Jake. I'm speaking of the character as weak not you yourself. And like all bratty cowards who can't take not getting what they want they attacked you too not disconnecting the alien character from the real person in the costume. People suck. :/

I agree, it was the character, not the actor. To be fair, I am a fan of the original trilogy (actually, Ep. IV only :-) So I am also one of those who did not like Jar Jar and the prequel trilogy that much. What I did like was watching the technology behind the movies including the creation of Jar Jar. It is a long time since I watched behind the scenes videos, but I believe I was fascinated by Ahmed's work on Jar Jar the same way I was fascinated by Gollum.

The honesty of your emotions and what you're going through is refreshing and I for one appreciate you sharing. I was one of the many people who hated the jar jar character and not because he wasn't portrayed with acting skill, he was or not animated well, likewise he was indeed, but for other reasons other people voiced in their displeasure with the portrayal. Specifically I felt George at the time took the blame and only in the last 10 years did I even realize a black man was behind that character. However as I've seen now kids who watched that film and loved it and all those films in the trilogy are now adults, they still love them, and most of them seem to love jar jar just as much. My young nephew and niece have seen them and their take was they like the films and loved jar jar. I remember hearing back then or sometime after the films released that George said his kids or one of his kids at least love that character. That take away is pretty obvious that kids are a lot more innocent and if the stereotypes based on racial injustices didn't exist that caused the backlash then just on face value as a character as a portrayal - there's nothing wrong with him and in fact he's very memorable. Some people famously have said and still say "we win or we learn". You have many valid well-thought-out and sad points you've made here and and some of your other interviews. I sincerely hope you also at times realize you are still alive you are still walking around your mind is still intact and don't spend more than a few minutes wondering why you didn't, but realize that you still can do many of the things you wish you had done. Not per se fix the past, but create the future you wish you had started back then. Thanks again for sharing your story and pain.

I know its not much consolation, but I believe one of the major differences between the prequel trilogy, and the LOTR trilogy, is that SW fans had a preconcieved notion of the beats of what makes a SW movie, and George threw a wrench in their vision by trying to challenging them with a more original and grander concept. I think Gollum became more akin to what Yoda originally was as a unique effects character. Jar Jar and TPM criticism is more akin to the backlash recieved by The Hobbit trilogy. Established fandoms are relentlessly harsh for new material when it doesnt match their preconcieved ideals.

Just watching and listening to your thoughts on why things didn't happen, re the mocap situation....it may of been because of a few things, the shock of the negative feedback, knocking you off track, the fact that at the time the film came out all the films etc were all going CGI etc. You were then having to deal with this emotionally, perhaps if the reviews had been positive, things like creating the first motion capture company could of happened as you would of been moving forward and thinking 'where can this go next'. I'll be honest, I kind of forgot that you were doing motion capture for the character. I've seen the behind-the-scenes features and I know it's you on set and then later in a blank room with a grid on the floor and little balls on all your joints to capture the movement, but I also just forget that it's also an actual actor giving a performance. But I think that's also something that should be acclaimed. For any actor, is it not more important for the audience to believe the character than to think about the actor playing the character? Not to besmirch Samuel L. Jackson but the guy is in a million things and so many times people just say that Sam Jackson does this or that in a movie than the actual character's name. Maybe that's because we can see his face, but why don't we refer to more characters in movies by the names of the characters instead of the actors that play them? Liam Neeson has become the grizzled retired guy put in a bad situation action star, and I can't name any of the characters he's played in those action movies because they all blend together. I know he's Qui-Gon Jinn and Good Cop/Bad Cop though. Maybe it's because I've seen Star Wars and The LEGO Movie a number of times, but they stand out as being different from the norm and I'm not thinking of the actor, I'm thinking of the character. Now enter Andy Serkis. He's great, but he's going to be forever known as the mo-cap guy. You were able to name of the characters he played. Gollum, King Kong, Caesar, and now Snoke. None of them look alike except for the apes and even then, they are totally different. Meanwhile, I didn't like the character of Klaue in Black Panther. Amazingly enough, the one thing I see him in that he isn't a mo-cap character is the character I don't like. I don't think it has to do with my knowledge of Andy Serkis as the mo-cap guy, and it has nothing to do with his acting ability, I just didn't like that character because the character was very much a tryhard and I would have liked something else more. Something I do want to mention though is that a lot of people say his name and they can list the characters, but they also don't truly understand what it is that's going on, so they default to the digital nature of it and think it's a lot of people behind computers doing most of the work when in reality it is a collaboration. They provide the visual character, but the actor provides the gravity, the movements, and the actual acting. Plus there's this Mowgli thing coming out soon and he's both Director and the character of Baloo (I don't know if he mo-caps as a bear, that would be stretching the limits and would be impressive, but he could also just be the voice), but I know I'm not at all interested in it and it could completely flop, so just remember, he's not perfect. And hindsight is always 20/20. Could anyone have predicted that motion capture would have blown up like it has? Or that the first people using it for videogames would see it used in movies? Oreo wasn't the first sandwich cookie, but it's the most known because something just clicked at the right time and the right place and now there's not store that sells food you can't walk into that doesn't have them. I bet the other cookie companies that had a sandwich cookie before them wish that they had done more, but it's all stuff you just can't predict. Also, Lucasfilm and Industrial Light & Magic have always prided themselves on doing what hasn't been done before, or if it has, to make it even better so that the next stories to come along can be all the more better. They made their own rendition of a sandwich cookie that has also been adopted by other studios that made their own sandwich cookies and something just made it work a little more and a little more. The whole thing was a group effort. I don't want to say that you couldn't have done more, but it is not worth beating yourself up over, and focusing on the whatifs of the past. You focus on things that do matter, like your race, but I don't think that is the end all and be all of motion capture and what you do with it. Lupita Nyong'o plays a mo-cap character in Star Wars now. That's something you should be proud of.

I Don't believe you should blame yourself for the perception of your character in the media. I believe the movie itself didn't meet the hopes of the critics, so because of this the movie is already going to receive some haste. because jar jar was seen as this "outlandish" secondary character, who was prevalent through out the entirety of the film, and because the film didn't perform as expected, thats why jar jar received so much backlash. its unfortunate that the criticism for your character has directly effected you the actor, as it clearly effected the future of your career, however I believe that using this instance as motivation to change the common narrative in the film industry regarding criticism for actors and films, would be more beneficial for our society .
