Long time commercial timber cruiser, Pacific Northwest here. I did things to get good results and save time. Go out to where you can see the point you want to measure to. Use the percent side of the clino. Distance up plus negative distance down. Add that together. Say. You are 79 feet away from the tree, horizontal. 93 up, 7 down. It's equals 100. multiply by distance. .79. The tree is 73 feet tall. Or get a lazer.

Hey, I've been urgently looking for someone who can explain this to me, but even the Internet isn't really helpful and I find a lot of contradicting information ... So maybe you ca help me out as soon as possible? You just talked about your bottom measurement of 7. If the tree base is below your eye level it should be negative right? So -7. How do you calculate that? Do you ignore the sign and still to 93+7 or do you do the mathematically correct thing and calculate 93+(-7) which is 86? I'm so confused by info online because some use the + and some the - and you never know whether they are ignoring the sign or not ....

Farthest apparently, or the distance that is closest to the actual height of the tree

Much too complicated just use a pencil and multiply how many times it will fit to the top of the tree at arms length. times a known height at the bottom of the tree for instance a six-foot person. Accurate within 5%

Ok so everyone doing field work should have a 6feet tall person with then at any times? 😁
