John "Smacker" Worthington III was born in 1951. An ardent performer, he started gaining traction in the local funk craze in Phoenix in the early 70's. He earned enough respect to get offered a Motown contract for a singles record in 1975. On the flight to Detroit however, he got into an altercation with a woman over the last pillow on the late night flight which resulted in a "correction action" by John to get the pillow. He was charged with assault in El Paso where the plane made a quick landing. With help from the record label's lawyer, he served a 2 month sentence as a plea. This song was shortly made after his release.
