if anyone wants a outline for a 900 word essay this mine For this essay I am going to be writing about fight club this was a Drama film released in 1999 it was an 18-aged film because of the amount of violence and graphic content in it. Although this was an 18 film the target was a young mainstream audience. It focuses on the life of a man as he finds himself entering a word of underground fighting. The scene I am focusing on is about 40 minutes into the movie it is when the club has just started and protagonists are entering the bar and then dictate the rules of fight club it is a key part of the movie as it the first time we, the audience see the club its self. Firstly I am going to be focusing on the cinematography of the scene is used in a way to try make the audience feel uneasy and unwelcome. The director has done to try to make the bar seem as unwelcoming as possible. By starting the scene with a extreme long shot the director has made the audience feel out of touch with the protagonist and how he has been shown to us so far then by tracking inwards and following the protagonists into the bar the audience are sucked into the action weather they like it or not. The tracking shot is used to make the audience feel like they are part of the pack gang in the bar. Another technique used by the director is a whip this is used twice to try to make the audience again feel unwelcome this because we do actually move in that way and to see it on film doesn’t look right making you feel disconcerted and confused. Yet another interesting camera angle used is the birds eye shot of the bar tender opening the trap door this creates the sense of hanging and voyeurism. Furthermore any shot of Tyler in the basement is a low angle; this demonstrates his superiority to the others. Or a close up shot this creates a sense of him being at home in the uncomfortable environment. Finally one camera shot while the rules are being laded out help foreshadow the ending as Tyler is literally in the background of Edward Norton’s character. Mise en scene is used to make the people seem as threatening an as intimidating as possible. For example as they walk into the bar we the audience are greeted with threatening face, clenched fists and shadowy figures this is to make the audience feel uneasy. The ‘public’ in the bar also help reinforce the pack like mentality of the group in number of ways such like the amount of eye contact that Tyler is given as he walks into the bar shows his superiority to the rest of them another way that Tyler is shown to stand out in this crowd of dark, cold and shifty charters. His jacket is far brighter than the surroundings and surrounding people this shows that he is not afraid to stand out and enjoys being the centre of attention this makes me feel like Tyler is far more dangerous than first glance would suggest. This makes the audience feel worried and disconnected with the protagonist that they have grown accustom to throughout the first hour of the film. Another way the audience is shown that the bar is an unwelcoming place the lighting. The little lighting in the bar is not only not showing little of the men’s faces but old electric lighting that hurts the viewers eyes after being in the dark then as the camera pans round the two protagonists are standing confident and well lit as if in a spotlight this shows there importance and superiority. The bar tender is also shown to have some more authority as his faming much like Tyler is very central and the main focus of the camera. As we watch them go down into the basement the barman opens the both sides of the trapdoor wide this is a way to create a more confident charterer. Then as we go down into the basement we are greeted with darkness and mystery as we cant make out much of anything. The suddenly the camera whips and we see Tyler arms folded and looking out over the people. The way that Tyler looks at the audience as he dictates the rules is uncomfortable as there is no eye contact and he is peering round you this is to show his disinterest in individuals and the unimportance of the viewer and he views for bigger picture all together. Finally several closes up suggest many different things striating with a man taking off an leather belt this is to demonstrate him leaving behind his shame. Then there is a close up to someone sliding their shoes across the floor is shows an abstinence from work and authority. There is also shown a close up of a man popping gum while looking straight ahead this makes him seem at home in this uncomfortable world. Finally a man takes off his wedding ring showing a despondence from family altogether this the men divesting themselves of the trappings of there everyday lives. This scene in particular is a perfect example of the general tone of the film as the cinematography and mise en scene is used as the film goes on. The sound is another important factor that helps create a strong atmosphere that is shown so clearly in this scene.
