For the PRS, why not a washer or spacer? I like the T-shape, just watch them. The standard Fender I tie a piece of rawhide string onto it, works great. My fave. Hate the Shallers. I use mostly #10, it's a Dunlop without the straplock.

I've never had a Dunlop fail me and they're on every bass in my collection (30 total). The 1" offset you mention is a plus! It allows neck heavy basses to have a more forward anchor & fulcrum point which helps tremendously. Also, at the rear of the bass, it allows room for the cable to be looped over without constantly rubbing the bass finish. And, I can snap any strap I own to any bass in a matter of seconds... no wrestling to get the strap over a button everrrr.

I made a couple of guitar straps out of the legs from my worn out jeans. So comfortable. And to attach them to the guitar I use a pair of chunky shoe laces tied to a regular strap button with a clove hitch, which is a self tightening knot. Solid. The strap is soft, so it folds nicely into the case with the guitar. I also have a couple of guitars I use shop bought straps with, and somehow I just don't feel as connected to the guitar.

Aaron, I do like the oversized mushroom strap buttons. I had a couple that came on a Hamer Sunburst. But they are my number two pick. My number one pick is the Dunlop Straplok. I love them and put them on every guitar. Elegant design. Really work. And because of the way the strap buttons are designed, if you leave your strap at home, you can still use them with another strap in a pinch. The way they stand off of the guitar doesn't bother me at all.
@wassholm

I like that you do a Top 10 list, and start #10-7 by saying "I hate these"! My personal favorite is Dunlop StrapLok. I'm not saying you're wrong, but I am saying that I've used them on pretty heavy instruments since 1997, and have not had a single one fail on me yet. So for me reliability is one of the key selling points. And also looks. I only use the flush mount kind, so when the strap isn't on there, there's nothing sticking out from the instrument. The bass I bought in -97 came with them pre-installed, and I just fell in love with look, so I've installed them on every instrument I've gotten since (which are mostly Warmoth). It has the disadvantage that if I forget my strap, I can't use any strap that doesn't have straploks. On the other hand I get one strap per instrument, and just never take it off, so it's not a problem.

Though, the basic Gibson buttons work great with rubber washers. That said, the Dunlop Straploks are my farourite system as a mechanical strap lock where something goes on the strap. The Gotoh EPB3 buttons are my farourite "normal" buttons where nothing goes on the strap. My issue with the Schaller locks is, that the U-shaped piece always starts to rotate on my (maybe to soft and thick) leather straps.

Brilliant review. I've been using Dunlop for 2 years and recently they started to loose somehow (not due to the screws but probably the buttons' mechanism itself), regardless of proper instalment and maintenance. I took it to a luthier and he couldn't understood what's going on either. Maybe it has a fabrication defect and the other products are fine, but wanted to let people know in case if someone is considering to buy it.

Strange that I missed so many videos despite being subscribed here. I used to be a fan of the Dunlop Straplock. But I gave up on it for the very reason Aaron mentioned. I ditched the locking mechanism but kept the actual button because they're basically oversized buttons in their own right. For newer guitars, though, I'd reverted back to the regular Fender-style buttons but use the Dunlop Lokstrap discs which work well enough for me..

THANK YOU! I've been saying that about the Dunlops for decades! You're 100% correct; either oversized buttons or Schaller S Locks (I put Schallers on everything I build)! Every time Aaron says "strap-on" you take a drink! (Too much?)

Great video, but I have to disagree with the Schaller vs Dunlop comparison. The strap sits just as far out with both types. Schaller's cup goes over the button and the strap is outside of that. Dunlop's pin goes in the button with the strap outside. Unless there is a washer thickness difference, they're the same. As far as the Schaller cup adding safety if the spring were to break... maybe in most cases. But I had Schallers that would spin on the strap and the cup never seemed to stay under the button, in fact, that's why I quit using them. That was early / mid 80's, maybe they fixed that. I do like the over sized button that you picked for number one (in theory, I haven't tried it). I'm going to try a set.

Enjoyed the video! I still prefer the old school Schaller locks. I don't like how the new ones have the screws attached to the button and you're stuck with only the screw size options they have available. I'd rather use the original screws to avoid any risk of damage and so I can swap it back to stock if need be. Also, the new disc thing is straight up heinous. The old ones definitely have their issues (making sure the nut is tight, possibly having to drill it out a bit for wider screw heads, and trying to secure a thick strap), but that's short term pain. Once it's done, you're good to go.

I have 3 DiMarzio quick clip straps since 1988 no problems. Fender strap locks stick out too far and have alot of play in them' very noisy and is one of the worst I've used. Gretsch strap buttons are another one of the worst I've used' screw the button onto the stud and when you go to unscrew it' the stud comes out with it unless you glue the stud into the body of the guitar. The Dunlop Dual Design strap locks stick out slightly farther than others so you can use them as conventional strap buttons in the event that you lose or forget your lock-equipped strap. I have Dunlop Dual Design strap locks on the basses I gig (including a Warmoth Deluxe 5 J) and have never had a problem. I love that they allow the strap to swivel as you move. I use Fender-branded "Grolsch washers" on another bass. They were tough to put on but do a good job. So long as you don't mind leaving your strap on, they are a pretty good (and cheap) option. I still believe the Dunlop Dual Design lock is best, but your criticism is completely reasonable.

Agree on most accounts. I use Dimarzio, Dunlop, Schaller and Grolsch. Mostly whatever came on the guitar. I like the Dimarzio ones but hate the plastic clip bashing up the guitar. The Schallers are nice, but squeaky and I found that the part that attaches to the strap loosens over time, unless you really squeeze it (deforming your strap). It always rotates on me. I also don’t think the extra security is even needed. So by default my favorites are Dunlop. You can get them with buttons that also can be used with a normal strap.

Totally agree with all observations! The oversized buttons are the best. Fan base aside, Grolsch is an answer to the "standard" buttons, make it less prone to slippage. There's also an issue of the button placement like explorer/V types with no upper horn: why would you place the button there at a negative angle?! LPs and teles also have no good button placement, which is probably the reason for all the strap lock "technology".

I think one piece of your logic has a fatal flaw here. Maybe it's the lack of tea in this video. Dunlop straplocks have the added bonus of being oversized if you don't have a strap with the lock ends on them. With the Schaller locks, you have this "worse than Gibson buttons" tiny strap button if you don't have your strap with the lock ends on it. As per your own example, if you forget your strap, at least the Dunlop works well with any strap. To be clear, I used Schaller locks for a lot of years (because Warmoth), and I swapped over to Dunlop 8 years ago because someone stole my strap on the second gig of an 11 show jaunt up and down the coast. I had three different people loan me straps, and all of them tried to kill my Tele by totally not staying on to that tiny dumb button. GC in Hollywood was out of stock of the Schaller locks when we got to town, and I made the shift to Dunlop. I've never had the locks fail me (and I guarantee I'm harder on strap buttons than most). I actually like having the strap a bit off the body, because I can loop the cord through the strap without wearing the finish.

@@darrellm3410 Hell yeah. Lol it sucked. Me and my bro in late 2019 found a gretsch corvette custom shop SS model. One of 7 ever made in 2011. It was sold for slightly under 3 grand. I wanted it because I was pretty sure it would go up in value. So we got it : ) And yes it has grown in value... BUT But the strap buttons are those old timey ones that they expect you to screw on every time you take a strap on and off. I'm sorry but this is a massive pain in the ass compared to other strap buttons lol. Had to replace them. BUT But finding the right type of screw that would be compatible enough was a giant chore. It suuucked lol. I had a stock pile of old screws from other guitars for just this sort of situation and I was lucky as hell to find the parts that worked. Moral of the story? Pay attention to strap buttons lol. They do kind of matter...

@@soyborne.bornmadeandundone1342 yes they do. I had a Gibson Les Paul Traditional and it had those same tiny button on it. My gretsch had those great button on it. No strap is coming loose from them.

Hoping you are reading comments - Love your videos for making content like this :) I've used Grolsches for year never had a problem, but not completely satisfied for some reason xD Dunlop and Clip-Lock I don't trust, but S-locks I do (but Dunlop & S-locks are sort of bulky)... My Gibson came with oversized once... I Love it, but I'm now considering D'Addario... Tried them? :)

I love the dunlops. The thing I like more is to change the screw to a better, very strong stainless screw that's a little thicker and longer. I like that the strap stays off the bodies, particularly on a collection of unorthodox, pointy guitars. I like that they keep the strap from chafing up the horns and body. Here's the from getting caught on the ends. And to be able to put all the screws and buttons in the guitars, and just have one strap that clickclicks to them all if I want is great. Or 2. I don't see the springs EVER failing. I've used them for decades now. Never had a spring fail, or a clip come out.

Thanks for the video and for leading me twoards the oversized strap button! Here in Germany there are two prominent alternatives to the one you are offering, it seems, the GOTOH EP-B3 and the GOTOH RB30 bass string retainer. I just ordered the EP-B3 and can't wait to have it here. Just because I'm curious: Could you share the dimensions of your oversized strap button with us? For example the diameter of the upper lip is 17mm on the EP-B3 and 19mm on the RB30. Best regards Q

Great video ! I like both the : D'Addario Accessories Auto Lock Guitar Strap ((50BAL01)) and the :D'Addario Joe Satriani Planet Lock Guitar Strap, Skull N Bones ... Both Locking straps (Not buttons)

Straps with locking mechanisms may even be OK with that shitty Gibson buttons... 😮

Be careful using those on any guitar with a nitro finish. The rubber on the back of the Planet Waves planet locks WILL eat through the nitro. I believe they're the same as D'Addario.

@@jimmyparris9892 Thanks for the tip , what guitars brands normally have the nitro finish?
@jimmyparris9892

@@drkoontz Gibsons are always nitro. Some others use a nitro finish as well. Fender uses nitro on certain models, usually a re-issue of something. PRS uses nitro every once in a while. You really just need to check your particular guitar. You can probably Google the model to find out what kind of finish is used on it.

Schaller strap locks on my electrics since mid-90’s. Love them, and when I was gigging with multiple guitars - essential for quick change. Thanks a million for presenting the redesign !!!! I’m going to pick those up now. Love this channel, dude your the perfect spokesperson.

I have Dunlop ' s on all my guitars and my bass. I don't like the Dimarzio ' s because of the plastic clip. I've broken a couple of those on back packs.

I wish he gave the diameter size of each strap button (when applicable) but I think my Hagström Ultra Swede comes with that oversized strap button from the factory. ^_^

Thanks for the info! Just bought a 2003 les paul with the tiny Gibson strap button. I feel like they are smaller than any other in my collection, including newer Gibsons. Going with yourOvesized recommendation but I have the S-locks in my Amazon shopping cart (before watching this vid) and was wondering how the S-Locks compare if you try to use them without the locking part? They look the same or worse as the Gibson if you forget the locking part. Any thoughts?

The cool thing about the S-Locks is that they can be used without the locking part in a pinch, but I certainly would not recommend using them that way when there are simpler and cheaper solutions. That's why the oversize appeal so much to me: they are a beautiful simple design that is also affordable. To me they completely eliminate the need for locking strap buttons.

I have the Schaller S and the Dunlop. Both are fine, but I like the redesigned Dunlop's. They'll never break. The Schaller is solid but I don't like how far the half that lives on the strap sticks out. Too far. Seems weird.. I recess all mine into the body a 1/4" as it is. Overkill, but it's safe. Never comin off. Dunlop for me.

My old Dean ML has strap buttons that are just like those "oversized" ones you showed last that it came with by default! They're a bit bigger than the buttons on my other guitars and mushroom shaped just like that (rounded outside, flat inside). I've always wondered why they aren't all like that, and didn't realize for a long time that most other buttons aren't like that! It's a far superior design.
