Desmond Doss is credited with saving 75 soldiers during one of the bloodiest battles of World War II in the Pacific - and he did it without ever carrying a weapon. The battle at Hacksaw Ridge, on the island of Okinawa, was a close combat fight with heavy weaponry. Thousands of American and Japanese soldiers were killed, and the fact that Doss survived the battle and saved so many lives has confounded and awed those who know his story. Now, he's the subject of a new film directed by Mel Gibson called Hacksaw Ridge.

Turning things black and white just to make it nice and simple, but then you realize that most people were going to kill each other anyway regardless of religion. Many people forget the families back home are part of the war also. They are sacrificing their sons, daughters, brothers, husbands, sisters, wives. They are just as much a part of the war as any other besides fighting on the frontlines. The worry and the stress they go through on a daily basis is unfathomable. But there’s no help for them.

I served there myself three tours, it is so demoralising to fight so hard to gain ground, only to pull out and essentially hand it back to the Taliban.
