*Edit NOTE* It seems I mislabeled 6th Ward for 4th Ward in this video. My advice is to not power through video editing all night long without getting any sleep. Any time 4th Ward appears it should be taken as 6th Ward.
Coach Nate and David spar with the heater shields for the first time. We wanted to try them as a trial to see if they would perform. It was interesting to note the difference in performance between the center grip method and holding the straps diagonally with the hand gripping the lowest strap.
It has been speculated that the latter configuration is optimized for horseback. This might make sense as it was difficult to guard the center line with this grip and that would be ideal on horseback as it would be more difficult to accidentally spook the horse. Also as a cavalry unit the center line is blocked by the horse and angle of attack by the rider anyway.
I also speculate that the diagonal grip with hand holding the lowest grip is meant for extremely aggressive action when dismounted, as it is difficult to guard the center line with it and unless one is in very close measure, deflecting many attacks is surprisingly difficult. It is when the fighter is close in with the point of the shield in the opponents armpit or in contact with the opponents hand or arm is when it is most effective. This grip is rigid and so we do not lose control during an aggressive action.
I was surprised to discover that the looser center grip was superior at deflecting sword strikes as the mobility of the shield absorbed much more energy by the deflecting action as the shield moved in the hand. The deflection of the shield also created corridors for the opposing sword to overcome in order to reset for another attack. Holding the straps for a center grip covers the center line much easier than the diagonal down grip. And lastly I find center grip is much easier to guard against most lines of attack as it can be easily extended at maximum arms length at the correct moment of need, thwarting the timing of the sword attack before it develops. Lastly it is much easier to use principles found in I.33 treatise using the center grip method.
