Triple Axel is the first jump in each program, executed at the same place on the ice. Photo sequences shot from the same position at the left corner of the rink, judges side. By mostly luck the two sequences start to within about 30 msec.
The Short program attempt resulted in a fall. The Free Skate attempt was successful. Here the jumps are compared for 15 frames with a split screen.
Frame 1 SP: ~30 msec before takeoff
Frame 1 FS: ~ at takeoff
Frame 2 SP: Throwing the free leg
Frame 2 FS: Nearly identical position to SP, including shoulder rotation
Frame 3 SP: Partially pulled in, shoulder orientation ahead of the FS
Frame 3 FS: Nearly identical position
Frame 4 SP: Still not fully pulled in, shoulder orientation ahead of the FS
Frame 4 FS: Nearly identical position
Frame 5 SP: One rotation completed, nearly fully pulled in, shoulder orientation further ahead of the FS
Frame 5 FS: Nearly identical position
Frame 6 SP: Fully pulled in, shoulder orientation continues to advance compared to FS, as it will for the rest of the jump
Frame 6 FS: Nearly identical position, even to the detail of the same finger positions, head position, and facial expression
Frame 7 SP: One and one-half rotations
Frame 7 FS: Identical position
Frame 8 SP: Near two rotations, arms tighter than FS, shoulder ahead 1/8 rotation
Frame 8 FS: Looser arm position, main source of slower rotation
Frame 9 SP: Air position still a bit tighter than FS
Frame 9 FS: Nearly identical positions, including fingers and head position
Frame 10 SP: Just past two and one-half rotations
Frame 10 FS: Nearly identical air position
Frame 11 SP: A bit over three rotations at landing, clearly under rotated (Technical Panel called this fully rotated)
Frame 11 FS: Still in the air
Frame 12 SP: About one-eight rotation on the ice, at a dead stop
Frame 12 FS: Landing at a bit over three and one-quarter rotations
Frame 13 SP: With foot stuck in the ice perpendicular to line of flight, upper body has nowhere to go but backwards, initiating the fall
Frame 13 FS: About one-eight rotation on the ice with some glide out of the landing
Frame 14 SP: Stating to sit down into the fall
Frame 14 FS: Continuing to glide out of the landing
Frame 15 SP: About to hit the ice
Frame 15 FS: Gliding out of the land just prior to bringing the free leg back
Even though the SP attempt had a slightly faster rotation rate, the time in the air was about 110 msec shorter, insufficient to complete the needed rotations in time. Foot position at the SP landing brings forward motion of the feet to a halt while the rest of the body keeps moving in the direction of the line of flight, causing the body to topple backwards.
The FS attempt rotated slightly slower, but the added time in the air was enough to allow completion of the rotation at the slower rotation speed of the jump.
