Dr. Matt thanks for the video! I have sharpened and tested a lot of blades, but the first generation Fili 14 is top and can be recognized by the absence of the "made in.. " stamp, and 14 is stamped in the sense in which the writing is stamped. The second generation had 14' flipped 90° to the writing surface. Once sharpened, the blade only needed good horse strop leather and that's why that "smile" of the blade appeared,is time without stones,just leather... Fili has the best steel I've come across, and the construction of the blade gives it such great tip elasticity that it can follows to the contours of the face. After sharpening, you have to be patient for about ten shaves and only then do you really discover it at its full potential. I have a whole collection of the first generation Fili, I really like how the 14 Filarmonica Especial works, it's like a dream like touch a feather on the face. My best results with Fili I obtained by sharpening the blade on Naniwa SS up to 12K, then on Suehiro up to 20K. At this level the blade passes HHT with cat hair kept 10mm from the edge. I don't know what your daily razor is, but if you get a Fili from the first generation with 14 "sleep" on the blade, with a width of 24mm and you have ten shaves after geometry and sharpening, I guarantee you will forget about the others! Best regards!

I was there for 2-3 hours talking about their stones in relation to razors. They had no clue; salt of the earth people, but no clue. BTW, I would respectfully argue there is no substantive difference between surgical black, translucent, and what Dan’s calls a True Hard. I have all three and use them to good effect.

I have a black Arkansas from dans and I've been told by them burnished or lapped to fine prevents them from cutting . Good to see you Doc. JMP had a whole bunch of brands before the Filarmonica. I follow a Spanish fellow who has quite a few of them and they all shave wonderfully. There is always the controversy of the blanks being imported from Germany but that doesn't jive (at list for all the models) because JMP lived/worked during and after the Spanish revolution. Franco was a nationalist and banned all imports to give the Spaniards a chance to catch up with the rest of Europe which turned out to be a disaster for Spain but a blessing for us razor collectors. Just my two cents on the matter.

I have 4 stones from Dans, a Washita, Soft, Hard, True Hard, Black 8x3x1. Dan's did not tell me that burnishing was ruining the stone. They instructed me on how they use sic powder for flattening and finishing, and that burnishing would only slow the stone down. They even said to watch videos on youtube and to read forums for other peoples ideas. Technically how could you ruin a flat piece of novaculite unless you shatter it? Dr. Matt, my question to you is, have you tried dawn and water for your Black Arkansas Stone instead of oil?

In all fairness to Dan, I have not heard him say that but a few people have told me that. I have tried plain water with dish soap, the glycerin water based lubes and oil. Honestly, the difference was not great. I use oil probably more out of tradition but the other methods are valid.

There are two things that I wonder about and can't figure out. (Straight razors and honing is still new to me). 1. Why is it controversial to flatten uneven spots the spine? It's been very useful for me and the only downside I can' think of is that you get some extra wear on the spine. 2. Why does it upset people when you kill the edge on the side of whetstone? I always do this to verify that the edge I'm getting is of my own making. Thanks for a great channel :)
@drmatt357
Жыл бұрын
1. It's controversial for 2 reasons. #1 is that many guys think it doesn't matter if the spine is twisted, has high or low spots as to what type of edge you produce. I call those people the flat earthers. Second is cosmetics. Putting wear on the spine ruins the aesthetics of the razor, especially if it's a vintage razor. 2. They think killing the edge is unnecessary. They believe that by doing so, you'll have to remove too much metal from the shoulders to re-create the apex which is total BS. You'll end up in the same place if you kill it or not. You're welcome Mate and stop by anytime!

I’ve always thought of doing a video on this topic Josh. First thing you need is a plan. You don’t want to go at your face with a wicked sharp open bladed razor without one. Draw your face on a paper and plan out your first pass. Which hand, which side, can even draw out each stroke. Tape it to the mirror and follow it like a road map. I would suggest putting a piece of tape over the edge until you can work your plan with ease and confidence. Then let ‘er rip!

And then we're both shaving and laughing like Santa and I'm all bloody, nicked, with toilet paper pieces all over my face, because my razor isn't that sharp and neither am I - not anymore.
