I'm going to back the designer here. You have to understand that although his sketches are not the cleanest, he is still able to communicate design cues and form. He is ultimately DESIGNING something which is different than creating a pretty sketch. Those sketches you just saw will produce a good looking sports car because of the DESIGN. An awesome sketch of a Toyota Corolla will still produce well... a Corolla.

@backspaceDUBSTEP ah no way! I'm studying Automotive design at Coventry University atm! More importantly I've been a huge fan of dubstep... from back in the Croydon 2step days! Big up for your channel, its nice to see that people are still producing the big bass, womwomwom dubstep, instead of this new trend of screamy, cut up samples 'dubstep'... That said, I was listening to the new(ish) Circus LP earlier... not too shabby!

sketching isn't the most important skill that a car designer needs...sure, it helps when you're looking for a job, but honestly having a solid concept behind is what really matters...plus digital sketching makes everyone "talented" as soon as the buy a cintiq and use sketchbook or photoshop...so I agree, he isn't drawing well, but the fact that he is a chief designer in Lamborghini just confirms my statement, that design skills aren't a fundamental asset for a car designer...

Ale V I'd don't think that's true per say. I'm studying design in Uni and there is a heavy emphasis on sketching and sketching very well from employers and professors. I say sketching instead of drawing because when you're brainstorming ideas and concepts with a team, you need to be able to visually communicate those concepts. People need to see it. Since this is sketching, you don't have to be Da Vinci but you certainly don't want to sketch stick figures and boxes. When you have your sketches, ideations and concepts down pat, you can turn them into drawings/polish them up digitally if you want. And photoshop won't turn into you into a talented artist automatically--you still need drawing skills.

Rawker101 Ia totally agree with you when you speak about students: I'm ad ID student too, there's "competition" between students, and I also have a pretty good sketching technique, so I'm fast but nonetheless my drawings are understandable and, uhm, "good looking". But as you may know, studying and working are two very different scenarios, many clients won't appreciate a good looking sketch, they would rather ask you for more ideas, and less refined drawings. Or they'll ask you to do sketches when the product is already finished, just for promoting and marketing purposes (like pubblications, magazines, and so on). There are many famous designers that do awful sketches, it's very important to communicate your idea in an efficient way, as well as having extremely creative ideas. IMO that's what really makes the difference between designers nowadays.

Where are you getting your information from? The idea that sketching is not important in industrial/product design? And why bother teaching it in schools and ask that students have that foundation? I don't know where you're getting information from and everything I've learned, experienced and seen suggests otherwise. Even the other design students who've commented here are saying so. If you have an idea but can't sketch or draw in the slightest, what good does that do you? Anyone can talk about the great ideas that they have but the employer is going to ask you to show them and thats typically going to be through sketching, drawing and CAD. The guy in this video is not horrible at sketching. A sketch is different from a drawing in that it doesn't need to be a complete, perfect drawing. You only need to get your ideas across with a sketch and he's done that. Give me some examples of these other designers who can't "sketch well" and maybe I'll reconsider.

Rawker101 Castiglioni, Ron Arad are the first two that come to my mind, great designs, but the drawings are "simple". Of course you can draw, but 80% of the people can draw. and THAT was my point, that if someone doesn't draw well, he can use softwares to improve and make his drawing "nicer", but you still have to draw something, you just cannot explain your concept only with words, that would be insane. But I see many students develop incredible sketching skills, like really good looking drawings and stuff, but the ideas behind them are weak. Perhaps you misunderstood what I was trying to say with my first message.

Ale V Judging from what I've seen they aren't as bad as I thought they would be for sketches. Though, some of them look like thumbnail sketches and those hardly ever look jaw dropping. But those are only two designers you mentioned. You said lots of designers can't sketch/draw very well. And all I'm saying is that in your initial post you made it sound like fundamental drawing skills aren't necessary to become a designer because it's the concept that matters. Photoshop can only do so much when it comes to your drawings. If you can't draw well on paper, you won't be able to draw well digitally either. Photoshop can only do so much in that respect. My point is that fundamentals are necessary as well as having a good concept. And even the greatest of designers that can draw or can't draw well have come up with bad concepts. But that's the beauty of design. You won't always hit a home run. You just keep sketching and refining your ideas until you get somewhere. You'll make a whole lot of turds before you get that winning design.

what about the driver? lots of talk about heritage ( marketing ) and performance, they always use the same engine layout. the design feels like a primitive of a Ferrari. Lambos feel unresolved in most areas. Like a brand that wants to rest on it laurels without any meaningful advancements. Lazy design with no vision.
