It is great that you talk about subjects like this. This is a pretty damn important topic if people are actually interesting in working in music and it is fairly uncommon for music education channels to talk about it

Indeed! It's so important to understand the deals we make and even a lot of professional composers are very unaware of what's inside their paperwork.

Really interesting! Can you give a really rough example of a potential timeframe for delivery on a feature film, from contract signing, to 25 %, to 100%, to scoring sessions?
@AnneKathrinDernComposer
2 жыл бұрын
Not really since it depends on the score itself and if the movie already has a release date. It can be anywhere from 2 weeks to 6 months or even a whole year.

Thanks for the info! Is it possible/reasonable to add in the contract the rights to publish and/or monetise full scores of our music? Not the exact scores used for the sessions (perhaps considered confidential) but maybe suites or even a concert version of the full soundtrack. I don't get why things are so strict about sheet music and how this can impact the intellectual properties of studios.
@AnneKathrinDernComposer
4 жыл бұрын
That should be in there by default. But since the production owns part of the rights, any publishing would have to be green lit by them or even done through them. Unless otherwise specified of course. But they always have to get a piece of the pie no matter what material is published anyway if they hold an ownership share.
@dimitrismarinakis9995
4 жыл бұрын
@@AnneKathrinDernComposer Thanks! This makes sense but doesn't explain the lack of sheet music releases from composers. Maybe any potential profits are too low to justify more work from either parties. I guess I'll find out someday in the future if I'm lucky enough to be in the position to negotiate something like this for my projects. Assuming someone will care enough to actually check full scores of my music of course.. ( 😢)
@AnneKathrinDernComposer
4 жыл бұрын
@@dimitrismarinakis9995 Oh yes, it's definitely a lack of potential profits. It's plenty of extra work and extra cost to get this done, to get a publisher interested, get all parties to sign off on it etc. for it to be worth anyone's time and $$$. That's also why often soundtracks are not released. Film music remains a niche after all - the market for it seems big but its audience is actually rather small in the grand scheme of things save for a few hit soundtracks.

so is the composer wrong for letting a client pay for tax? if he isnt doing it professionaly? just wondering
@AnneKathrinDernComposer
4 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure I understand the question. You can't "let" a client pay for your personal income taxes unless you're a full-time employee with a monthly salary. Then the taxes will be automatically taken out of your paycheck. But if you're a freelancer, the moment you get paid for any type of job, you are considered to be doing this professionally and therefore are responsible for paying tax on the money that was paid to you. It doesn't matter if it's only one time, taxes are owed no matter what. Of course depending on your country / region, local tax laws may apply that might slightly differ (e.g. most countries have an annual threshold up to which you don't pay taxes on money earned, especially for students).
