Sometimes, as an editorial photographer, you gotta use the light you’re given. One trick I learned from Matthew Jordan Smith is to always carry a tiny reflector, 5 to 7 inch. It’s small enough for you to use yourself while shooting, but does magical things to open up the eyes. Can’t tell ya how many times that little pop saved a shot, turning it from woe to wow!

Always enjoy the contrast of her accent to yours ;) If we ever got such harsh lighting here (and I ever got pull off smth that cool): Bring a hat, slow speed film (anybody ever used ISO 6 film?), maybe orthochromatic BW stuff to darken the sky, ND filter, or old slow glass. Oh, and ice cream for the model.

I am also a photographer and really love your work, but there is something that making your lovely photos slightly lower and thats is your retouching in lightroom or whatever the software you using, the problem is that you using too much vignette and Midpoint effect, and these effects mostly don't work for bright light photos, like you can see in you photos that you click on helipad, you made the surrounding of your model slightly dark and made her bright, she doesn't need spotlight to be effective,just slightly retouch it and remove that vignette effect then see what a lovely photo you really clicked, other wise your vintage ball photography really inspired me in the way you use lights 🤟🏻🤟🏻

Good video bro, yeah I’ve shot in harsh light plenty of times and the reflector does make all the difference or I just try to angle the head position in a way the shadows aren’t to deep. But even with the harsh shadows there is a creative edge to that as well and you just embrace the shadows and it’s great stuff in that space as well.. Just realize there is no box!! From one grandpa ass to another, Good Morning Sir! 😁 lmao Edit: Shooting in harsh light is a great thing! It's kind of like knowing your enemy. It's also great because it really does make you appreciate the golden hour, and just how valuable it can be. Understanding light, can allow you to shoot even in harsh conditions! :) Lastly, I like to under expose in harsh lighting, then in post, bump up the exposure. You can get some pretty unique high key style photos. :)

Seriously, dope! I would have loved to see her either laying down on the center of the helipad and you shooting out with the landscape behind her (we'd see her silhouette with LA in the background) and one from directly above with a super wide angle lens. - using the helipad to center her taking advantage of the strong lines of the "10" that appeared to be drawn in the middle of the helipad (I would have had her lay in the middle of the numbers and found some crazy Tyler-ish / MacGryver way to have the entire top of the building and her dead center in the shot.... I obviously am a super rookie here hahah but It would what been cool (in my mind) to see those angles and somehow try to create those shots, especially the one from above with her in the middle of the helipad.... but I wouldn't have even thought to do that if I didn't see you murder every shot you shared with us. Thank you for continuing to spark my creativity and for sharing your amazing work!

10/10 for framing and shots, 3/10 for editing the photos. Not sure if that’s the style you’ve been after but in most images, masks are all over the place. I might be subjective but i think the saturation is way over exaggerated as well.
@MikeGrayFilm
3 жыл бұрын
Art is subjective my friend ;)
@_kela.
Жыл бұрын
@@MikeGrayFilm yes indeed art is subjective, and I’m always hoping my photos “pop” when I get them developed, however I came here for a more realistic outcome. I think @ilak19902000 may have a point as well. When you pull the highlights, you pull the saturation, too. Personally, I try to get the colors as close to the original tones of what was so that requires a little more freaking as one tweak may require another. If you want your colors to stay live, play with the vibrance, it will be more natural and you don’t typically need much. I know this post was like forever ago, but clearly people are still watching :) just hoping to help someone going forward. Anyway, everyone is doing a great job! And there is always room to learn (I know that’s what I’m here for!). I’m just happy to see us using film! Especially black folk :)

South Africa (especially in winter) is 90% harsh light. In winter golden hour lasts like 10 min. I always see photographers refusing to shoot in mid day. Forgetting that diffusers exist. Even if you don't have one I honestly like the look I can achieve with harsh light over Golden hour. I think its time to start normalizing all lighting conditions. "Golden hour" ain't sh *t honestly. Its over documented and over utilized. Also over hyped and over deify

I watched this video for 5 minutes and I can't help but pointing out how lame this is... What kinda photographer uses sunny 16 on a shoot with a model? If you don't know there's something called a light meter, your photos deserve to be underexposed. And for the many rolls of films he appeared to have in his bag, these are the only photos he's able to show us? Let alone the dramatic saturation he added in post that just doesn't look Portra at all... You just don't see a photographer less professional on KZitem very often.
