Maybe the final nail to shatter Rick's ego is "Evil Morty", who'll prove that even his "smartest man in the universe" title, the very thing that makes him "him", isn't even true. Evil Morty might turn out to be the smartest man in existence. Not just in the whole universe, not just in every universe, but in everything that there is. Maybe a little too overboard, but that might be what's needed to stop Rick from changing the world, and instead to change himself.

The problem with Rick "changing" is that how does one change him while still having his charisma? Historically every time a show enters the traditional values with love and righteousness, things get boring. Not to mention Rick, who is one of the most charismatic person in TV history because of how he treats everything with nihilism, so how does one change Rick while maintaining his Rick-ness? I am dying to see how the writers will treat him. I don't really agree on MatPat saying Rick needs to be knocked down more, I think this is his lowest point, even though Rick never mentions it, his family is what matters most to him, he doesn't stay with other versions of Bird person or Squanchy, he stays only with alternate versions of his family, him losing the house is him losing everything. Edit: wow thanks guys for discussing here, it’s the first time that there are so many who responded to my comment

My hypothesis is he won't change, as much as shift his sights. For most of what we've seen of Rick, he's only cared about himself. My thought process is that something will make him realize he cares more about his family than himself now. He still doesn't care about anything outside of that focus, but his focus will be changed.

Man! Am I late to this (gracefully aged) video! 😅 I really like the one thing, that is most likely missed by the most, where Rick deleted his memory of not knowing who is the clone, saying: he is a bad father. It's really perfect, because there are two reasons to not know who is who. First: He doesn't want to mistreat the clone as second grade creature... obviously you dont need to delete your memory about that... Second: To find an excuse to treat any Beth as the clone, in which case, calling himself a bad father makes sense....😅 Also: I'm kind of curious if this comment gets any reaction after all that time 😊

I think Rick isn't as much of a bad character as everyone thinks he is. I think he's trying to find happiness without compromising himself, just like his other family members. I also think his family is going through a "phase" where they're getting tired of his baggage, but deep down inside they LOVE his adventures and the fun he brings to the family. This reminds me A LOT of the Suzamiya movie, where the protag realized even though Suzamiya was annoying, he still enjoyed the crazy antics she got the club in, and when she got erased he fought to bring her back. Also remember, despite how dysfunctional he is, you don't watch the show for Summer, Jerry, Beth, and definitely not Morty. You watch it for Rick.
@Chaeley
4 жыл бұрын
It's too bad this comment will probably get buried, because it really hits the crux of the issue. The family has suffered AND benefited from Rick in equal turns. The only reason they've had these positive character developments is because his presence (for better or worse) has been the catalyst of those developments. An entire season of 'the whole family hates Rick now and bashes him no matter what he does' hasn't been particularly enjoyable to watch, at least for me. I can't honestly figure out, at this point, why A) the family doesn't just kick him out if they hate him so much, or B) Rick doesn't just pack up and leave for another universe that likes him better. The only thing that I can think of that's holding him here at this point is his attachment to C137 Morty, and if that's the case... why not just erase Morty's memories and start over? The fact that he DOESN'T (and more importantly, that the family knows that he can, and is choosing not to) should register as him trying to be a better person and face more consequences for his actions. But it doesn't. He gets zero props for trying, ever. It's kind of exhausting to watch.
@davidashton3671
4 жыл бұрын
@@Chaeley They reached those development because of him being an asshole. Terrible actions that brings good results doesn't excuse those terrible actions. The reason the family haven't kick out Rick is the same reason Rick haven't left them long ago, on some level they still care about each other. The family won't be constantly criticizing him if they don't care about him.

It's a weird tightrope. I think what stops me from dismissing Rick's positive contributions as 'unwanted' is that we were given firsthand knowledge of how unsatisfied/unfulfilled/unhappy the family was trying to be normal before he arrived. Beth was a bored alcoholic that resented her marriage, Summer felt ignored and unwanted, Morty had no friends, Jerry felt disrespected by his family. For better or worse, all of them at this point are more true to themselves and are happier for it, though Morty's well-being is still on the fence here going into season 5. As much crap as Rick has brought to the table, the show hasn't convinced me that they would've been better off without him. They weren't doing so hot to begin with.
@sethkimmel9778
2 жыл бұрын
For me, I see an easy way to be serialized and episodic. The show exists in a reality with a multiverse, we can follow the adventures of several different Rick realities, as well as have random episodes about random Rick realities. We already have a few versions of Rick and Morty introduced to us, we can see their back stories as well as random adventures with them. The show should really be able to have their characters do anything and everything

Personal Theory, both Beths are clones. Real one is asleep in a vat dreaming about both of their lives, and will awaken when both can make their mind in unison. Even then, he values any version of Beth enough to not want a reason to think one is more important than another which is why he brain wiped evidence for later. I have a theory. No real evidence for this one but it’s just a theory I came up with. Maybe Rick is not Beth’s father. Beth’s mother had an affair with another person while married to Rick. Then after a few years of caring for Beth as her father, Rick realizes that she’s not his daughter and leaves. However, he can’t shake off his love for her and comes back one day. Beth who still believes that Rick is her father let’s him stay and season one begins. This would explain summer’s red hair, as she could have gotten it from Beths real father and explain how comfortable Rick is that he’s such a bad father. It could also explain how he changes between caring and cold in an instant.

Yeah, I think alot of shows could actually learn alot from children's TV when it comes to planning their episodes. With children, you kinda just have to assume that they are going to miss or skip some episodes, that is what life is like when you are a kid (you live by your parent's rules, not your own, afterall), making serialized storytelling difficult. So kid's shows are usually mostly episodic. But, especially when it comes to more modern shows (though there is a few good kids ones from the 90s that figured this out too), without any form of serialized storytelling, your show ends up lacking any depth, plot or meaning. Actions and resulting consequences is big factor in getting your audience to really like and get involved with your characters and your world. So many modern kid's shows (and that handful of forward thinking ones from the 90s) tend to use the A plot and the B plot formula. The A plot is episodic, and takes most of the screen-time of the episode, and happily and easily stands alone, for the most part maintaining the status quo. Then the B plot get's less screen-time but is an on-going part of the series' story that develops and evolves from episode to episode. What happens in the B plot in episode 1, WILL directly affect what happens in the B plot in episode 2. With some smart writing, the A-plot can on occasion influence the B-plot in an external way, without being directly tied to it (while not a kid's show, the early seasons of ST-DS9 are an amazing example of this). Then you bring the B-plot together during a mid-season and/or end-season two or three parter episode (that you air during school holidays, etc, so kid's likely CAN watch it all), and the B-plot becomes the A-plot for these episodes, which will ultimately carry the show forward to establish a new status quo for the next season (also to ensure the writer's don't corner themselves and can carry on using new ideas). Likewise, on occasion, if the idea is wild, cool or crazy enough, the show can skip the B-plot altogether in the odd episode to just have an entirely stand-alone episodic A-plot episode for a bit of fun (this is often done straight after the big 2 or 3 parter in order to give regular viewers something more lighthearted and a breather from the intensity of the bigger serialized plot). Being in my 30s now, I'd struggle to give too many modern examples of kid's shows that are doing this (though from what I understand from videos I've seen on KZitem, it's basically how they're all written these days), but I know PR: Dino Charge did this well (probably why it was the first decent Power Rangers series there had been in over half a decade), but very good examples of this approach that also worked well that I can remember from my childhood too are Sonic The Hedgehog (SatAM, not Adventures of), or of course the legendary Batman: The Animated Series cartoon.

Weird theory about jerry: Jerrys demeanour and attitude seem to generally come from those around him, when he gets shat on, he feels worthless and acts meek, when he is uplifted or given confidence by those around him he instantly gets overwhelmed with himself, and the power goes straight to his head. and with the hint to summers friend wanting to bang him, i think that if he starts getting too big for his boots hes gonna try to leave the whole family for someone else. Since rick is so intelligent he would be aware of this, so actively shitting on jerry and making him feel inferior may actually be one of the strongest things holding the family together... imagine how insane Beth would be if she found out he cheated... Just think about it.

It translated to Quality. The 'Reset button' for each episode is incompetency incarnate. But isnt that Low Quality what Rick and Morty is going for though?! I theorize that next season will be Rick spending less time with the family as they all act like he's no longer needed, where as he stays away throughout a large chunk of the season, the family starts to revert back to hating one another (Both Beths starting to see Jerry in a far worse light, the kids getting on each other's nerves, Morty starting to become more egotistical while also starting to feel out of place everywhere as his purpose left). It'll end with everyone realizing that Rick was essential to the family and that without him, everything falls apart.

I feel like writers never anticipated the popularity of the show, and now they are kinda trapped by the complexity of the show, like how would you ever end this show? Its impossible.

Honestly I think its the other way around. The fans try to hijack the show and tell the creators what its about. The show is mainly about goofy hijinks, the creators having fun. Its the fans who want it to be about complex meta theories and so on.

I mean you have a good point, and to the other people commenting about "DiD yOu NoT WaTCH thE ShOW" Congratulations for adding nothing. The characters already dislike him, and he is coming to terms with disliking himself. But there is still a long way to go to hate. Resentful and bitter is what they are, if they hated him, he wouldn't still live in the house.

Colton Tuers “Disgusted” and “Betrayed” are feelings that easily coincide with hate. Skyler may not have fully hated Walt during the Finale, but Junior did. Rick, as you said, is disliked by all, but his family doesn’t hate him YET. My point was that they probably will hate him by the time the show ends or sooner. One of them may be responsible for Rick’s ultimate demise. Who knows?

I imagine there's gonna be an episode where Rick shows up and he's just like the best person ever. He's nice, he's supportive and encouraging, he's optimistic, and the family won't be able to stand it.

Why not have Doofus Rick for an episode? Rick could need to borrow Doofus Rick's Morty for some "Noodle Incident", and Doofus Rick could just spend the time hanging out with the entire family that he never had.

That's too cliche. So many shows use that for reset button. It probably gonna double-subvert it by the family actually prefer that, but other multiverse rick takes over/whatever
