12:54 - This shot of Bane climbing down the chain is one of the most underrated VFX scene in the entire movie. Because they reversed a shot of Bane climbing UP that chain, and even THEN somehow managed to get the water to animate correctly in the reversed shot. Then again, I guess it's not that unheard of, because they did the same trick in "Star Wars Episode III - Revenge of the Sith" on an establishing shot of Mustafar, reversing the camera's zoom while maintaining the direction of lava flow. But that's Star Wars - that particular shot was probably completely CGI, anyway - while Bane's reversed chain climb was 100% practical.

I love the climb scene so much. Obviously the pit is as symbolic as it is real. Bruce falls and he relies on his father to come and save him, just like he did as a child (the rope). But he has to let that go. Only then can he rise and only then can batman rise into the light, and he can be batman during the day for the first time.
@marvelsandals4228

Yes, he also realizes that he needs to step into the light (a bit like the new Batman film ironically). In past films he has always stayed in the shadows, letting the police and people like Harvey Dent serve as the heroic face of Gotham, as he didn't feel worthy of that role. Bane has crippled the city, its police, and stripped down all its idols. They have nothing. They are lost and afraid. Batman has to get over himself and step up to the plate. He has to BE the hero this time, to stand on the front lines and lead the cops into battle, their "general" so to speak. Bruce's return even inspires the one cop (who is initially a jerk and a coward) to grow as a character. He sees Batman risking his life to fight Bane and so he feels motivated to join him. He can't bear to let Batman fight alone. When the cops approach Bane's forces, they see "the Bat" plane fly by and they all cheer and let out a battlecry, then charge forward. Their hero is here, they have a "powerful friend" on their side and that encourages them to fight.

Once I recognized all the references to A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens, (besides the obvious quote from the book) it turned a corner fast for me. For a superhero film, it's got great depth and is layered in ways you might not notice without multiple viewings. I guess that's what you are going to get from Christopher Nolan for the final movie in a series.

Also, notice how the LAST time Bruce makes the climb, the time he is successful, he packs his bag with supplies for his journey. All of his previous failed attempts he never did this. Why? The truth is he wasn't serious. He was just going though the motions, after all, if he failed, there was no problem: the rope would save him & he could just try again. It was like a video game. His HEART was not truly in it. With no rope, no safety net, there are only 2 outcomes: either he escapes of he dies. If he dies it is game over for Gotham. He can not afford to lose, he must find a way to dig deep and MAKE the climb at any cost. It forced him to wake up and take this seriously.

True. Unlike most Batman stories, this one is not a "monster of the week" that returns to the status quo. The universe is profoundly changed for good. Bruce has formally retired as Batman and left Gotham behind. His work is done. He did what he set out to do. His parents can rest in peace now and he can finally smile again, be free from the shadow of batman at last. Besides, Blake represents the next generation of the Batman, let him carry on the legend now. It is in good hands.

Yes, the first "pit" Bruce fell in as a child is where he encountered bats for the first time and developed his bat phobia. As a man, he returned to that same well, stronger, able to face his fears and embrace them, even embracing the symbol of the bat as part of his persona. Now he has fallen into a new pit, one that represents his TRUE fear, not his bat phobia, but his more primal fears, the darkness in his heart that has consumed him and turned him into a shell of his former self, his trauma and despair having lost Rachel, watched Harvey turn into a monster, having killed the man with his own hands, and now having even lost his dearest friend and father figure, Alfred. Bruce is completely alone and Bane will make him watch his city crumble while Bruce is powerless to help them. Yet, this too is just another pit. Bruce already fell in a pit, escaped it, and overcame his fears on a deeper level. He did it once, he can do it again. He has to remember his past, before the Joker and Harvey Dent. He has to become the same man, the same hero he was in the beginning, remember why he became a hero in the first place.

I actually live in Pittsburgh and when they were filming the movie here, it was SO hyped up. The stadium scenes were done in (formally named) Heinz Stadium, and obviously they couldnt damage the real field, so what they did was make a fake field a few feet above it, film people running on it and having them fall in holes on the field. Also, the names on a few of the players are references to some pittsburgh people. Ravenstall was the mayor at the time, so his name is on the kicker, and the player that runs all the way through the field is named Ward, AKA Hines Ward, a very much loved retired Wide Receiver for the Steelers. ALSO! The big fight scene between cops and criminals, The building (called the Melon Institute) is close to the Heinz memorial Chapel where a lot of wedding are held. During filming, a wedding was happening at the same time. Tom Hardy actually went down to the wedding while they were doing their photos, and posed in full Bane outfit with them, including the Bride climbing on top of the camo Tumbler. This movie has plenty of iconic scenes, but I have two in particular that give me chills. 1. Bruce successfully escaping "the pit". The whole sequence is great, but when the bats show up it has a visceral effect on me. The imagery and music feels like it is tapping into something more ancient and primal, like this is the hero's journey, the same story that has been told a thousand times over history. Bruce escaping this pit is just a visual way of showing a man overcoming his own demons, "rising" above it literally and figuratively. When Bruce sees the bats, he is shocked, but then becomes calm, almost tranquil. He is remembering his origins. Batman isn't just a mask: HE is and always has been "the batman." He has what it takes to overcome this. He believes in himself again. Also love how he stops to throw a rope down into the pit so the others can escape too. He is a true hero and leader. He showed them the way out and gave them the tools to free themselves. Those men will never forget him for the rest of their lives. 2. It is a brief moment, but at the end of the movie, after Bruce (and Batman) have been pronounced dead, the citizens unveil a huge statue of batman to a crowd in city hall, and the audience stands to applaud it, as Gordon looks on. Up until now, even when the police "looked the other way" or cooperated with Batman, they never once acknowledged him in any official way. He was always a "silent guardian" but they acted ashamed of him. No more. Everybody knows exactly who he is. He is Gotham's true hero. He saved them all. He deserves their respect and they have finally given it to him. It's a huge moment.

One important note about your comment after 18:34. Your interpreted it as him having to NOT to be afraid in order to make it but I think what the older man was saying was exactly the opposite, he NEEDS fear to be able to make the climb. He said "fear will find you" and that would be the key, that's also why the bats show up right before the crucial jump bringing everything back to his life-long childhood fear that has driven him this whole time and giving him the extra motivation as he now (without the rope) HAS TO to face the consequences of his success/failure and has to gather the strength he needs to make it out. 💪

Most of Rises' problems really just come down to it trying to fit too many elements into one movie, and they don't all get the time they deserve. -The harsh reality that being Batman nonstop for not even a full 10 years has savaged Bruce's physical body basically stops being a plot point after putting on a knee brace and recovering from the first Bane fight. Originally thought this was gonna tie back to how Batman was originally meant to be a symbol to inspire people, and Bruce would realize that he doesn't have to *personally* beat up Bane himself/alone to win. -Selina, Blake, and Miranda all have the same problem of fighting for appropriate screentime to make their arcs feel fulfilling. Catwoman especially feels like a waste since Hathaway really owns the role. -Whatever else you want to say about Bane, the boy is a meme machine and almost every line he has is gold.

A lot of people complained they couldn't understand him at all so they went back and recorded Tom Hardy's voice for that scene again and put it in the movie. I like the juxtaposition between the Joker and the League of Shadows. The Joker is a nihilist. For him existence is without meaning or purpose. Societies pretensions of order through institutions and laws is futile. The Joker wants to expose that truth and rejoice in the chaos that result of that. Meanwhile, the League of Shadows is basically a cult obsessed with order and social balance. When the institutions fail they destroy them so society begins again. They are ideologues. In the novelization of TDKR there’s a moment when Bane is liberating the criminals out of the prison. In there he’s told that The Joker is in his cell. Bane takes a look at him a order his men to keep him in his cell. Bane knows that the Joker can thwart his plan, his destiny, with the chaos and unpredictability only the Clown Prince of Crime can do.

In the larger canon the real kick is that he is using the same substance that is corrupting Gotham - Lazarus - to keep himself alive and powerful for *centuries* , and Batman frequently points out the hypocrisy in it.

I always interpreted it not as him needing to be without fear but to find his fear again. Fear keeps us alive, without it Bruce ended up where he did. It was hubris and being overly self confident that saw him defeated by Bane. Bane isn't without fear, he's just hardened it and shaped it into a weapon, driven by an incredible will to force. Ra's wasn't without fear. Ra's understood fear better than anyone. Bruce lost himself and some of his humanity in adopting the batman. Only by finding his humanity again could he find the strength to beat Bane. Only through acknowledging and controlling his fear could he escape the prison.

😲 Remember there were shootimgs at a few theaters during the wall street scene back in 2012? Didn't they stop showing in a few places for a while?

If you remember in the first film Lism Neeson told Bruce Wayne that Gotham didn’t deserve salvation and had to be destroyed. That’s the reason of blowing it with the bomb along with all it’s citizens.

Weakest of the trilogy but still a good watch. It tries to do too much at once, tackling the Knightfall and No Man's Land arcs plus Catwoman and all the natural fallout from The Dark Knight. In a grounded setting like this one can't expect Bruce to be constantly on the watch as Batman for decades, much as he seems to want to be at the start. Talia is running on her father's rationale for the destruction of Gotham, a reasoning that lost any merit it had now that much of the city's corruption was eradicated by Batman and Gordon. Outdated fanaticism; another great parallel to Bruce's own struggle, still trying to fight a battle that's already over.

Shame about so many of the mistakes with the stuntwork, particularly on a very few fight scenes; You can see extras in the background just...Well, if you see it, you'll know what I mean. It really gets in the way of all of the work that went right, but only because of how massive those mistakes are once you notice it. Personally, this is my least favorite of the trilogy, but I still really like it. I don't love it, though. A lot of the scenes I love, but I feel like in the context of watching the film and the rest of the story, they are not as effective. The potential within the ideas of this film are greater than what we got, at least to me. But it's still a truly great film.

Bold choice to cast Hardy, considering his size back then. But he sure as hell went all in and gave it his best, dude became an actual BEAST.

The "Crashing this plane" scene and the Pit scene the only scene worth watching in this movie. Everything else seems forgettable.

This movie has some of the best moments in the whole trilogy. The part when Bruce loses the rope to push himself to climb out of the pit has always stuck with me. I do feel like a lot of stuff is contrived to make the story happen (all the cops going in the sewers so they can be absent while Bane rules the city, also everyone not using guns in the street battle is really just so that Batman can fight in the battle). These contrivances don't take away from the overall greatness though, imo

my thoughts on this trilogy are pretty simple: the. best. batman. I enjoyed the Keaton batman as well, in its time, but Nolan/Bale just really nail the dark tone of the comics.

James, how do you feel about classic Sci Fi? I would love to see a competent reactor react to the film '2001 a Space Odyssey ' No one is reacting to this Kubrick masterpiece! I don't know if you have seen it, but I wish you would consider it. P.S. in my opinion, your reactions are the most competent and comprehensive on KZitem.

I feel like Tom Hardy is lost behind the mask. I'm not sure if that's me just being unable to visualize his face under that mask, or his voice being unrecognizable. But Tom Hardy usually inhabits his characters, and this time it feels as if the character has inhabited him.
