I was just filming an ultra running doc in the desert when a random German Shepard came out of nowhere and started circle us and barking. It was just the runner and I and I think the dog left us alone eventually because we both stayed as calm as possible. The power of breathing is real. 😊

Dude! This whole video is next-level!!! 1. Know how to get out 2. Com plan 3. VPN 4. Survival Med training 5. Fixers 6. Breathing techniques I will differ on your one point: “Covenant” was an awesome movie (also love Doug Liman’s “RoadHouse” w/actor Jake Gyllenhaal>>> the rating comes from the fact that even though it was a this was a plebeian storyline, it was gripping and kept my attention the entire way through and I can say the same for “Covenant”. ). Is this stuff in the documentary course?? Hah jk. I’m so sad I couldn’t afford to make it in again before the doors closed!

One time shot intensional, classic Luc! ( I once fooled around with the AK of soldier in Sudan that accompanied us on a film shoot, the whole damn thing exploded in my face and almost got me killed, but not a scratch. lesson learned:)

Prior planning and training - PACE primary, alternate, contingency, and emergency, if it is life safety you plan for four backups, such as phone, sat com text, know how to use local land lines, and the ever present signal mirror. Four ways to communicate. For each category think through your PACE plan and figure it into your load out. Also think through alternate uses first your gear, a bongo tie could be an emergency tourniquet, I always have a paper map available, even if I am going to England.

Thanks, Luc. What you've experienced sounds a whole lot, like Every Day As A Black Man. How do you protect your footage from being compromised or deleted? I shoot Sony, and if your camera is taken and the SD/SSD cards are deleted, those images are GONE! No software will be able to recover them.

So the topics other than conflict like let's say mental health, gender, climate change would also have the similar risks. Like whats your take on if some aspiring doc filmmakers define the few niches excluding the religion and politics topics? I would love to be a doc filmmaker, just feel like staying away from some more risky topics involving religion and politics

Pay attention to news about journalists. if you ever even halfway document something on your phone, your a documentarian. They will come for your camera. They will come for your footage. They will come for your online accounts. They will come for you. If you film in news or documentary enough, someone WILL come for you. Weather its an intern or a armed rebel, simply depends on the story. As someone who filmed protests in portland for years, I learned how to stay safe in the most dangerous city to be a camera guy in the US. It gets BAD here, and its only sometimes eclipsed by police violence in NY or LA. This is outstanding and life saving information Luc honestly I am inspired to make a video myself now. The skills I learned up well, aren't learned until its too late sometimes.

I'd love to see a video about how you go about finding a "fixer" in some of these locations, things to look for in a fixer, etc. It's such an important thing to do, but there's a surprising gap in information about HOW to get and find one! Great video btw!

@@HypnotizeAmerica many fixers are producers in local production companies basically, that's what I can tell from my experience. But as @sotalaquinta said, refferal from colleagues is also key because ofc not every producer fits every project. And ofc not every producer is a fixer because that implies they have experiences with foreign crews.

Not that I will ever get into some of these situations, I have heard from a CIA agent that it is good to have money with you $500, it can help you get from a - b in a tight situation. A laminated card with important numbers (your mobile can break, after all). And International credit card. Otherwise real good advice thanks for sharing.

This is fascinating - thanks for making this. My question is - aren't you worried about just getting robbed for the gear? You are walking around with $30,000 worth of camera gear in some of these shots - in an active war zone or drug cartel - is there any fear that someone will just shoot you for the camera? That has always been my fear even just going sketchy parts of cities - just getting robbed. I dont know how news crews arent constantly robbed - unless they have security.

If you live in the US, a good way to practice is with civil demonstrations. Like the Black Lives Matter demos at universities, etc.

Got caught in some pretty bad situations during a few of these. (working in St. Louis during Furgeson so early side of BLM) Not getting shot at bad but stuck between police and angry protesters as gas was getting deployed bad. Luc mentions keeping a low profile which can sometimes save you heartache, but in the US sometimes knowing when to raise your profile (bigger cameras, logo, bigger crew etc.) can sometimes be the right move to keep safe as well, wisdom is knowing when to do which.
