Radio active substances would be very far down on a long list of lethal toxins that you can consume in clear water. Why answer if you can just offer a speculation verbally disguised as facts? So cool! When it rains, the saucers under the huge planters sitting out on my high rise balcony fill up with water. Plants can die sitting in water for days, but you can't dump that dirty water over your balcony or you'll hear from your neighbors. For 3 years I had been sieving that dirty, mulchy water through an old frying pan splatter screen into the toilet. Lots of lifting and mopping involved. About a month ago I realized if I rolled up some paper towels into a tube shape, tucked one end between the planter and the saucer, and let the other end rest on the patio, the towel would wick out that rainwater every time, filtering any sediment. The clean water comes out so slowly it dries before it goes over the edge of the balcony. When I have guests over, I temporarily remove them. They do look like Kotex pads.

The majority of toxins need to be in specific amounts to be harmful so getting some out is better than none. A good option if you have no fire access but have some materials is to create a sun powered distilling setup. Sometimes if you dig a hole you can even manage to get a soil moisture to condense on your setup and get a little extra humidity for your organs ;). if you're in the woods, either by planning and got lost, or say your car broke down and you cant call someone, chances are you have napkins in your car from a rest stop or fast food place, or tissues, if you planned to be in the woods you likely have a waterbottle you can use to move water. you can also use a plastic bag to collect the "cleaner" water. as for boiling without a pot, he has some videos on how to carve or burn out a bowl shape in a log and which rocks to heat up in a campfire then put in the water you want to boil.

It's wild that you think there is a high probability of coming across someone's old campfire while lost in the bush or the one tree amongst millions that was struck by lightning in the 2 or 3 days you have to find water. What is concerning is that you think old campfire ashes equal charcoal used to filter water. Pour your water through old campfire ashes and you will turn your water into lye or something close to it. Not to mention other heavy metals and contaminants you are likely to pick up in the process. Point being you are lucky if you even find a water source let alone some miracle piece of usable charcoal.
