He went through life playing games with people, trickery, false promises and deception, he was constantly playing with people and viewed most things as a game where the same rules apply to everyone, as he is about to hang, the woman rings the bell in a sort of glimmer of hope, they leave…this is life playing games with him, that is why he says “the same rules apply” because he is no exception to the rule and he understands this.. Awesome but dark ending, you get what you give...

It's true he did all of those things but somehow you could tell there was decency left inside of him, buried under all the corruption and rottenness. That's the reason I still felt sorry for him throughout the film. Overall, I think the focus of this film is not just on a corrupt police officer who is struck by the lightning rod of karma but how society breeds degradation and immorality. The group of young thugs who beat the Korean student to death in the beginning... the teenage girl who was more than willing to give blow jobs and allow her body to be used as a sex toy.

So, everyone will debate and ask the same question. Why Does Bruce kill himself. Bruce is scared of the world. He even admits it too himself. After he is reveled to be pretending to be his wife, his world becomes clearer. When his boss tells him he can't be inspector, his makes him feel like shit, he feels like everything he has done is his fault, because it is. Then, the person who he humiliated and made to look a creep, got his job. He also talks about "the games" and that "the same rules apply", these quotes finally come back and fuck him over. Bruce kills himself with the scarf the women gave him, who he likes. Literally the second he puts his foot on the top of the chair, she appears with her child at the door. It's too late, Bruce can't turn back.

He didn't tie the rope properly to hang yourself. Either this is intentional or it's there so people don't actually know how to create a rope strong enough to commit suicide with. You're supposed to create the noose by coiling the upper/lower parts around each other, so it wraps tight enough to snap your neck/suffocate you afterwards. A simple knot like he died would probably buckle under his bodyweight

I put this movie on Netflix expecting another movie about a dirty cop. I was so blown away with how amazing and deep it actually was. Little did I know it was based on an Irvine Welsh novel. Welsh wanted to see if he could make readers feel sympathy and root for a completely irredeemable scumbag, and he absolutely nailed it. This final fuck you to the audience had me laughing. The scene where he breaks down and admits he thinks his family has left him hit me hard. This is hands down one of my favourite movies of all time. Same rules apply, my dear sweet friend.
