I’ve only got a 2.5 gal betta tank right now but my dad has always been a huge aquarium hobbyist and has had everything from piranhas to goldfish and when the tanks ever needed a huge clean he would clean all of the decor one week and a few weeks later he would wash out the filter in some tank water so he wasn’t destroying everything at once. I personally just clean my filter in tank water like you did and then do a partial water change all in one go.

1:09 This is the only thing I don't like about canisters. It's hard to clean them regularly. My favorite filter is an overhead sump. that can sit on top of or behind the aquarium. Just a small flowerpot with the type of filter media and setup Pondguru teaches. Except you can remove the media anytime and rinse or replace it in just a few minutes and you don't have the huge immobile setup of a traditional sump.

This is my first canister and the directions were very hard to understand. I'm confused of the correct process to do my water changes. I am also trying to only use the UV at night. Hello Sheila! I tried to copy your setup for filling the 125gal using the pond pump instead of carrying buckets. I'm not sure what I have done wrong because I can't get the pump to push the water through the tubing and make it to filling up the tank. The pump will push it about 3 feet and then it doesn't seem to go any further. I tried the same pump you showed since I have the same 125gal tank but it didn't work. I ordered a larger pump and still no success. My sink is about 15ft from my tank so I'm not able to figure out why it isn't working. Do you have any idea what I am doing wrong? Thanks!
@Lifewithpets72
5 жыл бұрын
Hi, there should be no reason for this not to work. Ours is also about 15ft away. Is there any blockage in the tube? What size tubing are you using? Is the bucket full of water and continuing to fill as the water pumps? I’ve asked Adam (he’s more technical than me) and he says other than a blockage in the tube or a faulty pump there should be no reason for it not to work.
@renaeshropshire7535
5 жыл бұрын
@@Lifewithpets72 I checked the tubing for blockage and there was none. The tubing is the same clear one you mentioned in one of your other videos. The bucket is full of water and it seems to stay full and overflows after only about 3ft of water has collected in the tube. Maybe it is the pump. I bought the same one you used and have bought another one the next step up when that one didn't work for me. Thanks for helping me troubleshoot. I ended up going to Lowe's and a very nice man in the plumbing section helped me by creating a 3 piece fitting to attach directly to my kitchen sink nozzle and a 15ft garden hose. It all cost me less than $20, so hopefully this will work and I can return both pumps.

Nice video, I’d just like to make a suggestion, as your fish load is quite high in your canister I would keep the bottom tray with a course pad and then a fine pad, all the other trays I would fill with as much ceramic or biohome ultimate as possible. This would allow much more bacteria to grow and you may not have as much waste build up in the tank. It also may help balance the tank and get rid of the algae. By no I mean am I saying your fish are unhealthy or the tank is unhealthy, just a suggestion:)
