Would have loved it if you explained what the various structure components are and the purpose of them (Project, Event, Library, Key Words). After watching your video I still have no idea what they are and what was Apple's intent each of them. I do understand how you are using them. It would be very helpful to have an explanation at a higher level. Perhaps some explanation on each of the hierarchies and how they relate to each other.

hi ben, do you create a new "library" for every single of your new youtube edited "video"? and after we exported the finalized video out of FCP, do you delete that particular "library" from your FCP's left tab, so every time you open FCP for a new edit, the FCP tab on the left always looks clean?(Hope you get what I'm saying) thx again, Ben, very helpful clips

I genuinely have no idea why Apple chooses to make the file organization process so difficult. The way the layers of organization are named makes absolutely no sense. With a catalog photo app like Lightroom it makes sense to have a “library” that holds all of your photos for easy access. A video app doesn’t have the same workflow and if you had every single video, audio, effect, SFX etc file in one library your computer would catch fire. The upper level seems like it should be Project and library shouldn’t even be involved.

My rant of the day: Whoever named it, was on drugs. It takes the longest for my students to understand the definition of the terms: Library, Project, and Event. It should be Project first. Project by definition includes entire happening around editing. Second should be Library, where you store all the info needed to put together a clip. Third one should be Event. LOL. End of my rant !

Thank you for this useful video. I find I can't drag and drop folders onto an event and automatically create keyword collections. It doesn't let me. The thing never turns green. What I have to do is hit "Import Media" once I'm in the event, then navigate to the relevant folders. I wonder whether that's a facet of a new version of FCPX. Very minor issue however.

I hate it ! HATE IT! If I don't want to go thru this gauntlet and just edit a video and Neat NR, and add titles etc quickly, all of this "organization" is just a needless confusing pain in the. ass. What I do involves multiple applications to make a commercial project .Organization in a file system with NAMED FOLDERS is what folders are for. I don't need all this crap, I wish I could go around it. The fact that people are confused from the start is an indication that this is just a mess and way too much. to go thru. Would've been great if I knew what the F you were talking about. Too many buzzwords that to some of us are undefined. Please don't assume we all know the definition of every buzzword you use. Library, for instance - to some of us that's a building that contains many books and are organized using a dewey decimal system. Event - I have NO idea WTF this means in FCP or how it relates to events in life. FCP's programmers obviously didn't grow up speaking actual English.

Multiple exports in case you need to do multiple videos for a given project (example: main KZitem video, KZitem short, Instagram story, behind the scenes video, etc) keyword collections just help you stay organized. They are like folders for your footage. You can make an event and call it “FOOTAGE” then if you have different types of assets like “iphone” “Sony camera” “music” “logo” you can essentially create separate areas for them to be more organized and easier to find, by utilizing keyword collections

Thanks man, I found this super helpful. I have just graduated from iMovie and I want to do things right! Have you got any tips for editing faster?

Practice practice practice! Once you know how the program works and the skill is there try to focus on not being as much of a perfectionist. No project is ever finished , only released. Give yourself a deadline to finish
