Well, I've only played the FFII Pixel Remaster, though I've heard from some fans that it improved on certain things that frustrated people about the original. I actually really liked FFII --- more than I expected to. I enjoyed the story and overworld, and personally I think it has one of the best early Final Fantasy soundtracks. That battle theme absolutely slaps. The game had a genuine sense of stakes and a serious tone that set it apart for me, particularly in comparison to its successor FFIII, which I found largely forgettable. Personally I don't find the battle system that bothersome, but I do think the leveling system for magic spells in particular is frustrating. I remember playing it and being irritated at one point late in the game because I needed Basuna to remove the confuse status effect, and my spell wasn't leveled up NEARLY high enough. Notably, the REASON it wasn't leveled up high enough was because the game did not encourage me to use it. I barely needed it for anything up to that point --- and apparently the game just expected me to use it superfluously to level it up. Ultimately I found there were only a couple of spells I used consistently in the game. Most of them were useless outside of a handful of very specific circumstances. Another thing is that the dungeon design is horrendous. They're unnecessarily long, and what is it with all the empty rooms? The game punishes you for trying to explore off the beaten path, and it's annoying feeling like your time is being wasted... especially given that the rate of random encounters in FFII is so high.

I’m playing through the Famicom version right now and I’m enjoying it quite a bit. After playing the first game, I’m still in awe of how much more ambitious FF2 is in terms of storytelling and setting a more somber atmosphere with its music. Levelling hasn’t been an issue so far either, though I had to read a good amount of peparatory material beforehand. I’m hoping I don’t turn around on it once I’m done the game, but I agree with you so far in that it’s not the terrible mess I heard it was.

I'm glad there are people finally speaking out in defense of ff2. It may have done some things wrong, but it did a lot of things right too. People tend to credit ff4 as the first character-focused story, but ff2 was the one that set the bar.

FF2 is severely underrated. It's a great game with a great story. And thank you for making the connection with the Elder Scrolls games. That is an argument I always make when defending FF2's mechanics.

I’d heard so much shit about FFII that I was nervous to play it. Imagine my surprise when I found it to be one of my favourite gaming experiences. The only real issues I had with the game were: Status Effects: I don’t feel like they’re encountered enough (and Esuna and Basuna are not acquired early enough) to make curing them with magic (and thus levelling Esuna/Basuna) feel natural. It was the only skill I had to grind. Also 100% application from physical attacks sucks. Story Pacing: the story started slow, ended in a rush, and each miniarc/quest felt like it was made up on the spot. Dungeon Design: Too many dead ends, empty rooms (with crwzy encounter rates lol) and they start small and gradually get bigger, they just start as too long and stay there. EDIT: I played a handful of minutes of the GBA remake, but completed it on the (wonderful, imo) Pixel Remaster, but I immediately turned off the QoL options like levelling HP with each level. I wanted to keep the experience as close to the original as possible.

I really like this game, it definitely gets way more hate than it deserves. It has an interesting story and at least mildly interesting side characters. It really drives home the futility of fighting the empire, and what other final boss does what this one does 😅

I've always been a big FF2 defender. Replayed the PS1 version last year and had a blast still. One overlooked aspect of the leveling system that I think is really interesting is how equipment affects stats like accuracy and evasion and thus stat growth as well. It makes choosing what to put on each character according to whatever class you're building them towards an interesting decision throughout. I'd say my biggest gripe is leveling spells individually is a bit of a pain. Personally I think they should've combined all spells into larger black and white magic levels. I like to compare Final Fantasy 2 to a similarly experimental sequel from the 8-bit days, Fire Emblem Gaiden. That was a game that also tried to totally reinvent the wheel to mixed results, but also introduced a greater focus on complex storytelling with dual protagonists with opposing ideologies on how to reach the same goal. The game got a remake in 2017 called Shadows of Valentia on the 3DS that I think really refined and expanded the game's unique ideas into something genuinely great, and I really believe Final Fantasy 2 deserves something similar, moreso than any other Final Fantasy.

II is incredibly dark. Especially in comparison to I. In fact, I'd daresay II was a thematic inspiration for XVI. Renaissance era. Rosaria = Wild Rose Rebellion. I think the Blood Sword was a DLC that could be glamoured permanently and matched the main characters aesthetics really well.

This game would've had a very different reception had it been released in the US in 1988 rather than waiting until the late 90s. What people who didn't play video games in the NES era don't realize is that the first sequel was always a radical departure in these days - look at Castlevania, Super Mario Bros, and Zelda for just three examples. Yes, there were a lot of issues with the mechanics, and the story is really basic by modern standards. But those were all revolutionary in the 80s. You have to admire the ambition.

With the leveling system I had to come in with the mind set of Elder Scrolls Oblivion and Skyrim while playing FF 2.

FF2’s gameplay is rough. And broken. But it’s got a pretty fleshed out story and introduces us to Cid, chocobos, etc. I’ve told people that even if they don’t actually want to play the game due to its gameplay that they should at least watch an LP of the game so that they understand the story (especially if they’re playing FF9, which references FF2 constantly).

II was the first game to really establish the rest of the series. You'd think that would belong to I but II has much more in common with the rest of the franchise.

I applaud them for trying something new. My gripe with it is the magic system. That should have never been based on how much you use it. It works fine for attack spells but healing spells leads you to spamming spells you don't need for them to be effective. They could have skipped that part and I would be fine with this game. They didn't and it's my least favorite FF game to replay.

sorry but ff2 is really bad and i play the pixel remaster vertion and was a really unpleasant journey, game has some many problems. I understand your point It do some good things for the franchize but is a really shity game nonetheless.

I STILL hate ITS lving up system even in a version where you don't need to practically KILL your own party to increase HP or stay at 0 MP to increase it so even the PIXEL remaster of FF2 PS4/Switch I'll still NEVER play it ever.
