I consider the Blue Mage to be in a similar vein as the Chemist, as he can pretty much break the game IF YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING. A player who is playing blind and/or isn't willing to invest the effort to build up the Blue Mage's abilities will end up with a quirky, okay fighter that becomes obsolete before reaching the second world.

I agree on that. Getting all the Blue Magic is really hard to do get unless you know where they are already. A couple spells are only available during a boss and an end game enemy which is a bit too late to be useful. Still, I got some good use out of Aqua Breath during one of my play throughs, and that spell is easy to find, though a bit tricky to survive.

Lets call the blue mage what it is: Strategy Guide Bait. For the Gen Z kids in the audience - a strategy guide is a book you buy with real money that contains a walkthrough. Back in the day many people (especially little kids) had no or limited access to the the net and accessing gamefaqs was not a given. KZitem didn't exist until 2005 and didn't feature walkthroughs/guides until later than that. So if you wanted to get all the blue spells and missable items you're going to beg your parents to buy you the strategy guide when they buy you the game.

This pair of jobs accumulates passively all pasives, and all stats bonus of all jobs you mastered, if you master all jobs, freelancer gets mastered, makes you characters insanely strong with damn high stats, capable of doing anything, and equip anything, in lategame these 2 are the most powerful jobs. Monk's punch suffers from poor scaling. They have the highest Vitality and Strength that can be transffered to Freelancer but that's about it. I can argue that Berserker has some merit over Monk and they can work better in synergy. Time Mage is indeed great, but they don't really offer anything too special since their best asset (Haste and Hastega) can be replicated with certain items, and Meteor is too random to be reliable.

White mages also get access to important buffs in both shell and protect in addition to the healing making them truly the closest thing to a must use job. Other jobs I find incredibly useful and don’t require too much time investment outside of doing the main storyline in addition to the white mage are ones like the Ninja, Mystic Knight, Summoner and Black Mage. Having a couple of Ninjas that can use Spell Blade and a couple Mages that can use White Magic with Summoning or Black Magic can easily clear the game. Best of all this kind of setup is dead simple for first timers to the job system to setup. Also easy to equip 4 Hermes Sandals to all four characters so a Time Mage is pointless.

I thought the Dragoon class was all right. It was like having a knight with slightly better agility. He had good armor, and the jump command was useful. I loved the Time Mage job class. He could caste haste on the party, and he could attack with Comet and Meteo. The Monk class was one of the best! He had great agility, high HP, and you didn't have to get him a weapon. The Barefist ability is a great ability to use if you wanted to use a certain other job class and didn't have the weapon for it. The Knight is another good job. He can equip strong weapons and armor, and if you master that class, you get EquipSwords, which has the potential to be breakishly good when combined with some other job classes. Bard was a GREAT class! You could have the Sing command, which gave you the ability to increase the other jobs' stats. Requiem was awesome for undead enemies. Maybe you just don't know how to use that job class. Chemist is easily a tier-one job class. Mix is an amazing command that can break the game wide open if you know how to use it. Not to mention he can use the stat-boost drinks and Recover and Revive are are great abilities to master. The Samurai class is a tier-one job. GilToss is an amazing command that, yes, costs money, but can be breakish in so many circumstances. Also, his high physical evade is very useful as well. Ranger is more tier three than tier four. While X-Fight is good, it's a hard skill to master. He has a unique weapon that's not so good, and you have to be at an almost ungodly experience level for the Animals command to be useful. White Mage is not as good as Chemist or Blue Mage for healing. If one of your characters has the bone mail or has the zombie status on him, then the White Mage can't heal him, and you don't get Holy until the end of the game. Also, he's bad at physical attacks, and has a bad, unique weapon. He's more of a tier-two/tier-three character.

@@liricopetanco6257 Berserker and Dancer are the two worst jobs by a long shot. Yes, the Dancer can equip the Ribbon, but so can the Freelancer. The Berserker doesn't really have a use at all. He's slow, his axes do very variable damage, and all he can do is attack. He doesn't have any good abilities at all. The Trainer/Beastmaster job class can be good in theory, but theory rarely translates to fact. First, you really need a guide in order to know what animals you can train. Also, it's hard to get an enemy down to exactly 1/8 HP to capture it. While Control can be a good ability, most enemies are immune to it, and even if you can control that enemy, it usually takes a few turns to control it. Red Mage really isn't a great job class, either. Yes, the job class is well-rounded, but its real downfall is that he's so well rounded that he has no real strength. While Dualcast is a good ability, it takes a very long time to master.

@@ThePikachunianRebel Blue Mage works best with other Mage classes as opposed to more physical classes. Though guard doesn't prevent your Blue Mage from learning the spells. Word of advice, use a walkthrough for learning the spells. Because some are missable and some can be acquired earlier of you know what your doing. Also, some spells only work based on enemy level as well as your own, whether you're trying to learn the spell or use it on an enemy, like Goblin Punch dealing 8x physical damage when the user level is thebsame as the target, or the level 2-5 spells that only work when the target level is divisable by the respective number attached to the spell. Finally, you not only have to be affected or take damage from the spell, but you also have to be alive by the end of the battle in order to actually learn it, so spells that hit hard like Lv 3. Flare or the instakill Lv 5 Death spell have to be dealt with using countermeasures like the Chemist mix that can make a solution to absorb certain magical elements or have only your blue mage level be divisible by 5 and then revive them before the battle ends with White Magic pr Phoenix Down respectively. Also, there is only one enemy that knows Mighty Guard and you don't see it until World 3 and in the ocean. You'll need to use Control from Beast Master on it to learn was is basically the best protective buffing spell in the whole game.

Here would be my list from worst to best: 22. Dancer-This job class is useless. Yes, the Dancer can equip the Ribbon, but so can the Freelancer. There is no reason you would ever use it. 21. Berserker-He's slow, his axes give very variable damage, and all he can do is attack. He doesn't offer any useful abilities at all. I never really use this job. 20. Trainer-He may be good in theory, but theory rarely translates to fact. You need a very comprehensive guide if you want to know what enemies you can train, and it's hard to get the enemy down to exactly 1/8 HP in order to capture it. It's good to be able to control enemies, but many enemies can't be controlled, and even if they can be controlled, it will usually take you a few turns to be able to control them. 19. Red Mage-He's a well rounded character, but his weakness is that he really doesn't have a real strength. There's really no reason why you'd want to use him. 18. Dragoon-Not a terrible class, but not a great one either. Jump is a good command, but there's nothing to really write home about here. None of the abilities you get from this class are all that useful. The very definition of "Meh". 17. Geomancer-Good in some situations. Earth can give you some good attacks for no MP at all, but it's so variable that its usefulness is limited. His physical attack is awful with bells, but he is good for finding pitfalls. He has some reasonable abilities. 16. Thief-The Thief is bad in battle, but you can glean some very good abilities from him. Agility, Caution, FindPassages, and Flee are all great abilities. If you can choke down his bad game play, you'll be rewarded. 15. White Mage-Good at healing, but not a lot else. His physical attack is awful with staves, and the Chemist or Blue Mage would be a better pick for healing really. If one of your characters has the Zombie status ailment or has the bone mail, then he won't do much good. Holy is a great spell, but you don't get it until near the end of the game. 14. Black Mage-He can really wreck some havoc with his magic. However, you usually have better options. He uses a lot of MP, and so the Mage Knight or Summoner would be a better pick. 13. Ranger-He's fairly good, but not great. His Aim command guarantees a hit, and bows are a fairly good weapon. However, his armor selection is bad, and while X-Fight is a great ability, it takes a long time to get. 12. Time Mage-He has some very useful magic. Haste and Hasteaga are downright useful, and Meteo guarantees a lot of damage. However, the Black Mage is better at attack, and the Time Mage has no healing abilities. 11. Bard-His attack with harps is fairly good, and his Sing ability is potentially game-breaking. The hide aspect of things is the only down side. 10. Monk-Very fast, high HP, and no need to give him a weapon. Let's not forget how useful the Barefist, Chakra, and Store abilities are. The only downside is that he has a very limited armor selection. 9. Summoner-Don't stay away from this job class for sure! He's like a Black Mage but better. Not only does he have stronger black magic than the actual Black Mage, but he also has spells like Golem and Carbunkle that will do some useful buffing. All of this offsets his bad physical attack. 8. Knight-Powerful and able to equip all of the best weapons and armor the game has to offer, he's your tank. EquipSwords and EquipArmor are good abilities, and I like to learn them as quickly as possible to break the game wide open. 7. Ninja-Breakishly good. He has high agility, the Throw command is good for bosses, and you're likely to get a lot of preemptive attacks with one in your party, not to mention he can attack twice per round. Give him the EquipSwords ability to break the game wide open. 6. Mage Knight-Like a Black Mage, but he uses less MP. Great against boss enemies, and he automatically casts shell when his HP is low. He can equip very powerful weapons, even if his armor selection is limited. 5. Chemist-Has a lot of GREAT abilities! He can use stat-boosting drinks, he can administer items for twice the effectiveness, and Mix, Recover, and Revive are some of the best abilities of the game. He's really better than a White Mage. His only weakness is his weapon selection is very limited, and his physical attack is bad. 4. Samurai-He has good evade, more-than-reasonable agility, and his katanas are some of the best weapons of the game. Combine that with a fairly good armor selection and the ridiculously over-powered GilToss ability, and you have a game-breaking job class. 3. Blue Mage-What can you say about him? He has everything. He can equip good armor and weapons, and he has the best magic of the game. He can use healing magic, attack magic, you name it. If you could only have only one mage in your party, this would be the one. Yes, the magic is hard to get because the enemy has to cast the spell directly on you, but if you do get it, you end up with some very useful magic indeed. 2. Mime-He has a customizable command menu. He can mimic any attack another character did, and he inherits all the passive abilities from other job classes. Yes, Mimic is a hard ability to learn, but you could just use the mime without assigning the ability. Also, he can equip most weapons and armor. 1. Freelancer-He can equip all weapons and armor, and you can assign two abilities to him. What more do you want? The only down side is you don't get any abilities from this job class. Use this job class against the final boss or the super bosses.
@MumblesTomato

Freelancers stats are also based on every job you’ve mastered and gets all passives from mastered jobs. I typically make my healer a free lancer and my support character that can use rapidfire, Mix + passives from ninja = mega OP Mimic is a massively OP class for magic too. Duel cast with nearly all spell, summoning, and then blue magic to boot! The duel casting doesn’t work on the blue magic, but that is okay.

Dancer does lots of dmg and steals MP so you can turn them into a White mage and heal then turn them back to a Dancer, and Dancer equipment improves the ability to do sword dance which does lots of dmg without needing lots of ABP to get. Berzerker does 50% more DMG has good axes like Death scythe that can cast death on bosses, hammer from backrow, and earth hammer which casts quake on miss and you can make him miss by blinding him, Rune axe does tons of dmg and is based on Magic pwr which you can increase by giving Berzerker magic abilities like Black or Summon. Berserk does well with bair handed and both handed. Trainer -> you can use venom, bio, death claw, missile, demi, or use math and he has an upgrade that lets him catch much more easily. Control can defeat Shield dragons, red dragons, and prototype which are good enemies to focus on (running away on all others) for grinding, and it gets higher% of working with the control hat. Whips stun people and are backrow and don't take that much ABP to get. Many enemies when released can 1-shot or 4-shot bosses. Red Mage can break rods (but they lack magic pwr : ( ), can use healing staff to heal Time Mage can break rods and equip healing staff

Great list although I strongly disagree about the monk being among the weakest classes. The Barehanded ability it learns allows any other class to do way more damage WITHOUT a weapon equipped; sure saves on Gil big time. It also learns Counter which is very useful on the Freelancer. The Pixel remaster version even lets you use Rapid Fire barehanded on the Freelancer which is even more powerful (especially when it lands multiple critical hits).

The Ice Soldiers often have Mithril Swords as their steal. Grab 4, then make sure all your levels are at 11. Goblin Punch turns weapon damage into an unblockable magic attack, x8 with the level matching. Shiva can't absorb Aero/Wind, so it's a good back up.

I think Dragoon is a poorly designed class from the basic foundations. You have a heavily-armored physical attacker with high HP and a shield, and yet its signature ability takes them out of the fight for extended durations so that the rest of the party is left to soak up more damage. This guy should be TANKING, not cowering in the clouds. I never found the Jump ability to be all that amazing anyhow -- it takes forever to execute, and it's barely worth doing when you could just do two normal attacks instead. It's also the ONLY thing they can do, making dragoon an incredibly boring, one-note job. Thematically, it just makes no sense either -- I would expect someone nimbly leaping high into the sky to be lightly-clad, not decked out in heavy plate armor from head to toe. I know this is FFV we're talking about, but I can't help but think back to FFIV and how Edward the bard had that "Hide" ability where he would just disappear and do nothing. THAT should have been the "jump" command, at least in function. Call it "Sneak Attack" and have Edward slink away, then come back later with a decently powerful attack to the enemy. It makes a lot more sense for him, being a squishy character. Kain should be the one staying in the front lines, drawing fire away from his weaker allies. ...Oh, also I think it's hilarious that in FFVI you have the Dragoon Boots that can give anybody the Jump command -- like it's not even a big deal and not substantial enough to base a whole character around.

I agree, it is poorly designed, but you must admit it was cool that you could make a makeshift dragoon in ffvi with the boots and Edgar
@saulotrigueiro5890

I think is because the dragoon job is not tanking, none of the final fantasy has dragoon as tank, their focus are always DPS, in ffiv you already have Cecil with the cover ability to protect your team (Cecil also have way more HP and defense than Kain), i think the warrior/knight from ffv also has cover to tank, in dimensions i think the paladin and the dark knight have tank skills. You can also check FFXIV to see that Dragooners are not tanks (Samurais also use Heavy Armor but are not Tanks in fft), the same goes for FFXII Zodiac Age. Just because someone uses heavy armor they are not going to be tankers (you can also see world of warcraft with a bunch of DPS who use Plate/Mail, but i guess is not final fantasy). Even in ffix Freya does have cover, but her HP is actually almost always lower than Zidane (who is a thief that can't even use heavy armor), her HP is nothing close to Steiner, i'm not even gonna talk about how Kimarih is nothing close to Auron in HP/defense. But you are right about the Jump damage, it should be something like 2.5 the normal atk damage to be worth using, and maybe cause more damage if the enemy flies or something. In ff dimensions and in FFTA2 they have their breath skills, i'm sure Bravely default and second also have cool skills for the Dragoon job (named Valkyrie in these games). To be a Tank you need skills like the Provoke from the Viking from FFIII, Cover is also pretty famous Tank skills, Draw Attack from Dark Knight, maybe some form of Aura, like the Rampart Aura from the Knights of Tactics Ogre.

One thing this video reminded me of is that this game’s soundtrack was filled with absolute bangers. Also now I’m kinda curious where the GBA jobs _would_ go on the list. Probably not high... Cannoneer has virtually nothing going for it and requires you to buy items to use its abilities, Oracle is too unreliable (though it does have the only ability that lowers the encounter rate), and Necromancer is just a Summoner that you can’t heal normally. Gladiator at least has Finisher, I suppose...
@ExplodingOdin

I think what really hurts the GBA jobs is just how late in the game you get them; you can get the MIME before any of them! Oracle especially would have definitely been more helpful earlier in the game (with how high the encounter rate is in general, esp if you're actually going for the Brave Blade) and Gladiator would also have been a good addition to the phys fighters, esp since they can use bows as well (giving you more incentive to buy Ranger stuff too) but yeah I don't think there's any saving Cannoneer or Necromancer (why is this the LAST job you get in the game?!)

Like all things, Necromancer’s main weakness is solved by a Blue Mage’s abilities in White Wind and beyond. The Necro’s own blue mage like abilities scream for a NG+ feature, as while it would break the game (which ones don’t?) it would do a lot to make using them fun and their ability gathering worth the effort. Like with the Blue Mage in FFX-2; many of those abilities are quite difficult to acquire, but the ability to use them in repeat playthroughs helps a lot.

The mimic may be able to equip 3, but the stats suck, and with 4 characters to customize you're more than likely never going to utilize them all. The class that I always liked was the Mystic Knight. When you get the best spells, Mystic Knight become a terror. In my opinion it is the best job on FFV

Btw, if you want extreme damage, I'd try Focus/Two Handed + Flare Spelblade. I've heard Flare cuts enemy defense to 1/4, is non-elemental, and gives the equipped weapon +100 attack power. Focus/Two Handed are pretty much identical, but Two Handed is passive, so no turn wasting. Might use it against Enuo when I reach him.

I just finished FFV for the first time two months ago and I was surprised how much I enjoyed it because of the class system. Really enjoyed learning some things I didnt know and some classes to consider on a future play through!

My favorite is FreeLancer , if Master any job, ye gain stat boost (with a limit) , can use any Weapon/Armor and Accessory, can Dual Wield if mastered Ninja, Counter if Mastered Monk. Has 2 Ability Slots. Even though Mimic , if i remember right , is the same as FreeLancer just with Mimicry, but can only use Knives, Rods and Staves, but good for Spell Casters. And 3 Ability Slots. Edit: I'm a grind heavy player , so...... yeah lol. I got Dual Wield and Dual Cast at World 1 before even starting the Flying Fortress lol.

Time Mage also gets Meteor, which is arguably the best spell in the game. I think you forgot to mention that. Overall I agree with most of the placements, but the only job I would actually call trash is Berserker. I hate not being able to control my characters.
@AyuNico

Meteor is ass. It doesn't scale of magic power, it actually has a fixed damage formula similar to comet, which means that it doesn't get any stronger the more you level up and actually becomes weaker because it takes into account magic defense and nothing else.
@MaskedGuyCh

@@AyuNico It's the strongest spell against single targets, at least in a normal playthrough where you don't level grind so much. It also ignores Reflect, so it has some things going for it.

Berserk + Two-handed and you will break the game for like 3/4 of it. Best damage you can get without a lot of AP or equipment. Sword Dance can be triggered more if you get all the dancer items + being immune to status items and even more broken with dual Twin Lances. Dancer and Berserker should be way higher.

Honestly; thanks to all the successful Job Fiesta runs over the years, even the worst job selections at random lead to interesting results. The game was made pretty darn well; at least from a challenge-based morbid curiosity kinda way. also curious what you think of the GBA jobs

Considering how broken the Reset spell is, seeing Time Mages so low is really hard to accept. In the end all the classes and their best quirks become essential once you decide to go for a Freelancer party.
@Snow_Fire_Flame

While Time Mage is indeed woefully underranked by this, I can't say Reset hype features much. I guess it's a way to save yourself from random wipes in an LLG occasionally? For bosses after a save point, every class in the game has reset, it's just "load your saved game." (Maybe useful in a weirdly defined Iron Man no reloading run I guess, but Reset seems against the spirit of an Iron Man run as well.)

@@Snow_Fire_Flame Reset/Return has actually its uses. The developers were really stingy with save points expecially in the second and third world dungeons, Reset avoid the problem of having to undergo an entire third of even half of a dungeon just because you didn't have the right strategy planned or RNG was against you, being a spell that actually works during boss fights (Neo Exdeath included) allows the player to start again and correct the errors they made during a fight without the need of turning off the game and start again from the last save point. It also costs justs 1 MP and it's less time consuming and saves a lot of frustration. Obviously this is my point of view regarding the utility of the Reset/Return spell. Sry for the essay.

In playing the original Super Famicom version translated and the Dragoon's Dragonblade ability is terrific. I add it to a Summoner/Black Mage so I get a ranged attack that also restores HP & MP. Another benefit is enemies with drained MP won't cast spells. That's pretty useful. I also equipped a Knight with the drain sword and X-Attack which means they're dishing out huge damage while healing themselves and covering other party members.

I had a mystic knight with cover and counterattack. I'd use drain as his spell. It'd an attack about to kill your white mage? Nope, covered by the mystic knight, blocked with hits shield, counterattacked, and drained health from the enemy! But that was second only to a single bard ability... The bard's confusion song was WAY OP! Enemies just had a random chance of offing themselves while confused and the song hits every enemy and barely any enemies are immune.

Monk may suck as a class, but it's one of the first you want Bartz and Faris (at least) to master, because it imparts the greatest strength stat in the game
