On March 11, 2016 a federal judge’s ruling brought to a close the litigation between the State of Washington and the US Department of Energy (DOE) regarding provisions in the Hanford Consent Decree. The ruling establishes new deadlines for emptying some single shell tanks and sets new milestones for construction and startup of the Waste Treatment Plant, often called the vitrification plant. The facility will safely treat most of Hanford’s 56 million gallons of tank waste for long-term storage.
The Hanford Communities filmed an Issue Briefing with spokespersons for the DOE and the State of Washington. J D Dowell, Deputy Manager of the DOE Office of River Protection, and Alex Smith Manager of the Washington State Department of Ecology’s Nuclear Waste Program, provided their perspective to elected officials of the Hanford Communities and members of the Hanford Advisory Board on the recent ruling and the path forward for completing Hanford’s tank waste cleanup mission.
