In early 2022 Utah Transit Authority began planning for the retirement of its aging "Comet Car" coaches, which passed through several owners over their roughly 50-year lifespan. With the future of the cars uncertain, I took a ride in February 2022 to document the interiors.
UTA officially announced retirement of the comet cars in April 2022 but public outcry caused them to delay retirement for another month. They were then taken out of service and stored in a yard in North Salt Lake until the true "last run" which took place during the Hill Air Force Base air show in June 2022 since the bombardier bilevel fleet could not handle the increase in ridership due to that event.
They were auctioned off in October, and by 1 November 2022 all cars were sold or scrapped. The sold cars were purchased by a subsidiary of American Heritage Railways and shipped to the Abilene & Smokey Valley Railway in September 2023.
