The best way for reversing may be adding valve gear. Normally this would be really difficult with the scale you’re working at and the limitations of lego pieces, but I think it may be possible if you use Hackworth valve gear as it’s relatively simple compared to others. The only addition to the current locomotive needed would be the guide block. A good example is “Edward Thomas” from the Talyllyn railway.

I'm not sure what to use for flywheels but if you need to modify something yourself there's a few things to remember: you want them to have as much angular momentum as possible so if you're going to add weight add it as far away from the axle as possible and make sure it's balanced. You could use a soldering iron to melt some holes in a wheel and then thread bolts with nuts through them to experiment with weights but it would look too rudimentary for a final product. Ideally you would have a wheel with a heavy outside rim that you could cram a Lego wheel into but aside from custom machining something I'm at a loss for what to use as weight. In any case this project is amazing! Keep up the good work.

In model making I use something called 'green stuff' (epoxy putty) a lot it is soft as plasticine when fresh, you could mould it around a piece of lead or thick copper wire wrapped on the perimeter of the flywheel and finish with paint to match the engine. You could make the mould from a large lego piece so it fits in.

I haven't tested this specifically with lego myself, but for making a flywheel, many forms of tape have a surprising amount of density to them. My guess is it would probably be either duct tape or electrical tape. If you took the spokes from some large wheels and replaced the rubber with tape rolled around them so that it's solid, you'd probably get a passable flywheel. For bonus points, you could easily add some small washers in between some of the layers to get some additional weight.

Look into “valveless” pneumatic lego engines, those lego valves eat a lot of power, a valveless lego pneumatic engine uses kinking hoses (lego hoses are scarily durable) and its flow is a lot more efficient. As for a flywheel, your best bet isn’t motorcycle tires, its either the old lego weight blocks (expensive and hard to find) or coins or some other metal object built into a flywheel. Also for noise suppression one of your best options is a a small pop bottle with a brass tube melted into the lid disguised as a train car. That way your train can run for a while without compressor noise for videos, might need a couple tanks but that shouldn’t be that hard to do. (Maximum pressure lego can take is 50 PSI, bottles are good for 100 if its a good one)

If you want to keep the flywheels pure lego, either use the bike wheels shown or brick-build dense discs. If using tyres, you could even fill the tyres with something like technic chains to increase mass far from the axle. Lastly, gear them to spin as fast as possible. It's speed x rotational inertia that make them effective.
@alantaylor2694
Жыл бұрын
I like the brick-built disc idea. I'm sure there are some official weighted bricks available. I think I even have a 2x4 weighted brick from a 1970's set. A few of them would make quite the spinning mass.
@matthew.wilson
Жыл бұрын
I had initially been thinking of a flat-built disc of plates and tiles. That would end up as almost solid plastic so quite heavy, would be very strong, and should be easily resizeable. There are 2 catches to the brick-built disc in general : 1) space, which seems to be quite limited, especially adding in gearing; and 2) structural integrity under the centrifugal loads at the necessary speeds. Those weight blocks were fairly tall and long. If you build them "vertically" out from the axle you'd need to pass plates or tiles around the outside to hold them in place like straps - clutch power wouldn't be sufficient. But there seems to be about 3M width available, so it could be possible, but I think that that might be at the cost of gearing. I don't think they'd fit any other way. May be worth a try, though, if one is willing to pay for them.

You could also try doing and adjustable valve gear, tho that might be complicated due to space constraints. Keep up such awesome projects!

I absolutely love what you have done. Your compressor and accompanying car design is fantastic. A flywheel will definitely help, but it already looks to run very smoothly. The motorcycle wheels you showed at the end are the wheel I like to use for my LPEs. I really like the rear tire from the Ducati set, it has a great weight to it. Also you can take two 2x6 weight bricks and sandwich them between two of those motorcycle rims. If you put 2 2x2 tiles on the end of each brick they fit perfectly snug but the weight inside the brick can rattle slightly. But with that one caveat that is the heaviest most compact flywheel I know of.
@legotechnictrains8999

Thanks for the advice! There is only 3 studs space and there needs to be a gearwheel so only 2 studs for the flywheel. I think the old school motorcycle wheel is the thinnest with 2 studs so the Ducati wheel can not work unfortunately. I put a couple small screw bits in the rubber wheel so it was much heavier and that seemed to work well. But that was in my simple test model.

If you're looking to continue to refine this, I think I hear what sounds like a jerky inefficiency in the connections between the piston and the wheels. I expect closer examination would find that not all of them are maintaining a constant or matched rotation speed. That said, I don't know if it can practically be improved or how much difference it would make or is making now. It just sounds like there's some part of that that doesn't sound as smooth as would be ideal to my ears, but even if I were examining it in person, it would probably take some time to even be sure what it is my ears are picking up on, much less if it could be improved with all the pre-measured parts of Lego pieces. Take this as just a single data point of subjective sensory observation that MAY be useful to help guide your further development of these mechanics, and don't take me too seriously. I just get less efficient in my writing when I get tired like I am now.

You know what, I just had a little experiment with a support vehicle. It worked great because I could match the speed of the Unimog and loc so the rubber bands were just hanging without stretching. BUT it did not go much faster for some reason. I guess the compressors can still not pump enough air to make it go really fast. And I tried to make a coach with sound absorbing material but the buggy motors are so extremely loud it is no use. I might try making a couple coaches for the compressors and also put a motor in the coaches so the locomotive is just pulling the tender but I don't think it will go much faster, after doing the experiment with the Unimog. If your wondering which Unimog I mean, check this old video. You might consider putting an air reservoir in the boiler space of the loco, and charging that with the pumps periodically rather than letting them run constantly.

Very impressive. The timing is crucial for a good operation. The left and right side pistons need to be 90 degrees out of phase. (And yours looks to be timed perfectly. 🙂)

You know what? It works even better when it's a little bit more/less than the 90 degrees. So the "of phase" is even more out of phase haha.

@@legotechnictrains8999 This actually happens with real steam locomotives too! I've worked with a few that had the wheels offset by 75 degrees because the valve gear was made weirdly and there were some miscalculations in the schematics. It sounded weird going around the track too, having a sort of "chuff chuff, chuff chuff-chuff chuff chuff..." sound instead of a nice, consistent "chuff chuff chuff chuff..." like most engines. Each engine has it's personality and it's own little quirks!

@@cadetkohr5508 Working with real steam locomotives, now that's impressive! It was driving me a bit crazy. I thought this is 90 degrees so why doesn't it run better. Than the pin would slip a little and it would run better but I didn't know why. The pin is now fixed so each time it will just run. I need to build one of these big steam locs!
