In the 1979 we sent a week over there. It was a booming place back then. A lot to do and the food was delicious. I owned back then a 1969 Cessna 150J. We had a great time. Thanks for the stroll down memory lane. I used to work for Walker’s Cay Resort in the late ‘“70’s. Don’t laugh, but I was the stewardess on their DeHavilland Twin Otter that went from Ft Lauderdale to the island each day. My husband, who was one of the dockmasters, and I lived in one of the apartments directly above the dockmaster’s office. The clubhouse had the most delicious food and the Bahamian employees were such great people. At the time we were there it was owned by Robert Aplanap (sp?) and the resort manager was a British man by the name of David. I can’t remember his last name though. I remember getting off one of my flghts and was asked to come down to the scales on he dock to stand by an enormous sailfish that had been caught that day so they could take a picture for some fishing magazine to show the comparitive scale of it. I still have the picture as well as many wonderful memories of the place. A lot of intrigue went on at the time, with Bebe Rebozo being flown over quite a few times. Nixon was president back then, the Shah of Iran was nowhere to be found for awhile and I assumed this is why Rebozo was coming over to discuss whatever was going on with political matters, since as far as I could tell, the man didn’t really fish. So many stories...

My boyfriend, David Dean, and I crashed into the ocean soon after takeoff from Walkee'a CAY on Easter Saturday in March, 1975. The resort, as I understood it, was owned by Robert Abplanalp, the inventor of the aerosol spray valve. David broke his neck and died on impact. I was saved by some night fisherman. Mr. Ablanalp and David were very good friends. It was sure a lovely resort back then. It was a bit frightening to see that landing strip again....

I'm astonished to find Walker's in this current state. I was fortunate to have spent three glorious days there with my family back in 1972. I was 14 years old. The waters and reef were in pristine condition and diving there was beyond comparison, containing everything you would expect to see within a Bahamian coral reef system. Huge lobster, grouper, hog snapper, conch, etc. was there for the taking with no restrictions. A memorable encounter with a large Mako shark as well as, on the second day, surfing over the reef in crystal clear water on perfect, smooth waves coming off the Atlantic stand out. This visit was a cathartic experience for me and I hope this island will be returned to it's former splendor at some time in the future. Thank you, Walker's Cay!!

I first flew into Walker's from my NJ home in a Cessna Skyhawk, sometime in the mid 1960's, with my wife and two of her young cousins. We happened to arrive on its "official" grand opening and were in the company of many Bahamian officials, including its first Prime Minister (after the British gave up their possession of the Bahamas) who's name, as I recall, was Pindling. I also got to meet the Island's owner, a Mr. Robert Aplenape (spelling might not be correct) who owned the NY Bronx based company, Precision Valve, which developed the first sucessful plastic aerosol spray valve, thus making him a multi-millionaire. However in talking to him he came across as your average New Yorker and was a very personable gentlemen. He was introduced to me by his assistant right hand person, who's name I forget since this was almost a half century ago. I do remember that I was told that Mr. Aplenape was personal friends to Richard Nixon and Bebe Rebozo a confident to that ex-President. Mr. Rebozo also owned adjacent island just to the east of Walkers which had a very large mansion on it. We only went over to Walkers for the day in order to see the place and do some swimming, but while there but I do remember a very large twin engine PBY amphibian airplane sitting on the ramp adjacent to the runway that went down to the water. I will have to find my old log book which covered that flight one of these days. I think that I may also have some photos (probably slides) from that trip as well somewhere. I also think that we may have made a second trip there some years later with my single Comanche, at which time we stayed overnight... but that might have been at Jack Tar's Grand Bahama Hotel instead. Again the old logs would square that away if I can find time to go through them. These days all of my flying is in a Experimental Light Sport that I built in 2007.

I used to do shark and coral research there in the 90’s. The island was also on Shark week a couple of times back in the day. There was a tiny hotel, restaurant and bar, and saltwater pool. They catered mostly to SCUBA divers when I was there. Loved taking the seaplane there, and saw the stars like no place else on night boat trips. A very special place indeed. Definitely have some pics to dig out. Such a cool place!

During our trip that plane was being repainted so we got to fly on one of Chalk Airline Grumman Mallard. It handled the ramp with no problem. I went to Walkers in about 2000 when it was a bustling fishing/diving destination. It was truly a unique little island. On one night that we were there, we took a small boat over to another island close by that had a restaurant/bar were we had dinner. The bartender told us the story that Richard Nixon actually had a house on the island and at times would drink to excess in that little bar and one night the secret service detail pushed him home in a wheel barrow (don't know if it was true but it was a neat story). There was great fishing around Walkers and when you would get back in from fishing, you would clean your catch and fry some up right there on the docks for dinner. The place was one big party at night. Wish I had 14 mil.

Richard Nixon and Robert Applanalph and "Bebe" Rebozo all frequently visited nearby Grand Cay where there was a house. I worked on all the Communications for that facility, plus communications on Walkers Cay during that period when I was assigned to the White House Communications Agency. Nixon and he cronies, did occassionally drink a little more than planned, but all those activities took place at Grand Cay. Traveling 3-5 days a month to maintain the systems was a great experience and still remember the great fishing.

Brings back memories! Used to fly over from Vero Beach with 3 couples - each staking out a beach for nude sunbathing, then dive for dinner, party and fly back that nite. Great days in the late 70s. Good luck !

Incredible explore! That island does not look very abandoned to me? Look how well kept the grounds are? Look at the longer grass around the base of the trees compared to the lawns? The running generator, fresh coconuts on that cart, planes on the runway, people roaming around, look how clean the windows are in the church? Boats cruising around the inshore. Lot's of clues! 😎Someone is 'living' there but I guess for insurance purposes or they are just squatting there or whatever reason they don't want to appear as 'living' there! 😁😎 Before splashing out $14m, I'd ask myself why did the previous owners leave such a beautiful paradise? 😳

The rebar you saw near the water was the fish cleaning and bait house. The blue wall you showed was the small grocery/liquor store. As you walk past the pool there use to be a club house / restaurant I watched NFL football games at the bar over looking the pool. To the right of that building use to be a 2 story barracks type building with hotel rooms in it. On the path where you saw the church there use to be individual cabins you could rent. The guy that closed the door as you walked back to the plane use to be the Bahamian customs office.

The cottages at the end of the island you found is where the staff lived. It was awesome waking up in the morning and watching all these little skiffs coming from other islands to drop the employees off at work. I wish I had 35million to buy this island and rebuild the resort so that it could be home to largest marlin fishing tournament in the world again.

@3dsman

Gantry crane is for the power generation facility. Anywhere you have a large motor involved in a 'mission critical' situation you'll find one of those gantry's. For example, you'll often see a gantry like that beneath water towers that have pumping stations. Reason being that if the pump fails people will be out of water so you'll need to replace the pump motor quickly and you can't be waiting around for an appropriate lifting rig to be made available so water can be restored. In this case the electric generators are probably what that gantry was placed there for... to move the generator on/off of a truck, etc.

Once, while bringing a 40' trawler back to the States for its owner, we stopped at Grand Cay, the closest inhabited island to Walker's. The Captain I was working for was an old salt and told some stories about what Walker's was like... Apparently the marina we were at was the brothel and the men would take small boats over at night to sample Grand Cay. Also, all the workers for Walkers came from there. I was there in '06, not long after it was abandoned. Had to wait a week for weather to clear to cross the gulfstream.

Friendly Skies Film that was one of the reasons I decided to model it. I saw your first video and flew there in fsx and was rather disappointed when it was grossly oversized. Another comment, I posted above about my travels monthly to Walkers Cay to maintain the Presidential Communications while I was in the Army in the 1970's. Myself and a couple of my coworkers were invited to go bill fishing by a couple drunks that we helped at the bar...order a part for their boat. They thought we were joking until we delivered the part the next morning delivered on a scheduled USAF helicopter. That same week the tournament drew a large crowd, and I observed David Jensen (The Fugitive) and his father participating in the tournament. Great memories. Robert Applanalph owned the facilities at Walkers Cay, but the land was controlled by the Bahamas and was leased for 99 years.

I loved going there. I flew in one time on a twin engine Piper and landing was terrifying. The church was re-built, the first one went down in the late 80’s. You could find all different color sea glass. There were a couple cool bars and shops. We stayed on my (then) girlfriend’s father’s boat. That place was hopping. Fresh conch, lobster from the locals that would drive up on their little john boats. That place was a lot of fun. About 3 hours by boat from Ft. Lauderdale. It was a big marlin fisherman’s paradise.

I commented on what I believe was your last video, too. I made 2 SCUBA trips out to Walker's. The first I believe was in 1998, the second I think was 2003. The 1998 trip I flew in on a Chalk's Albatross and we made a water landing, and powered right up the ramp you guys were talking about. I totally enjoyed my trips there. The diving was outstanding, they had one of the best shark dives in the world, with close to 100 sharks gathered at one site. Many other good dives with really cool caverns, lots of marine life, tarpon dives, etc. The resort itself was a bit rustic and worn, but that was not a problem for me. It was clean and provided everything we needed. I had a couple of the best stone crab meals I have ever had that I remember to this day. The last time I was there we could tell the sport fishing popularity of the place had fallen off quite a bit, which was a shame, as that was their bread and butter. I'm not sure why it dropped off. There was also a shark research station located on the island down around where the power plant is. I guess they packed up post hurricane, too. Pretty sad to see what has become of it, i'm just glad I got to get out there before it was wiped out.

Here is a link to an incident that occurred when Erich Ritter was on Walker's Cay doing shark studies at the research station. There is also video of this incident as it was being filmed for the Discovery Channel (sorry, I don't have a link, but it's out there). I met Erich on my second dive trip out there. He went out on the dive boat with us to do the shark dive, but I didn't know his story or who he was at the time. I noticed he had a fairly large section of his calf missing but pretty well healed over but heavily scarred. I struck up a conversation with him and learned the story. It didn't dampen his resolve to study sharks, I can tell you that. www.nytimes.com/2002/04/12/us/shark-expert-is-bitten-during-filming.html

We had a lot of interface with guests in the Marina, Hotel, and bar. They all knew we had dial tone and they could beg us to order repair parts. Sad that two concurrent hurricanes (Frances and Jeanne) devastated the island in 2004, a year after the islands dedicated owner since 1968, named Robert Abplanalp, died. Some trivia: He was the inventor of the aerosol valve for spray cans...hence his fortune to buy the island. He wanted the island to be a fishing resort, yet still keep the conservation of the island. Evidently during WW2 it was a US Navy anti sub base for aircraft, prior to that it was a fishing resort leased from Bahamian government by a Palm Beach FL businessman in 1935. Prior to that it was uninhabited for 200 years, when the original inhabitant was a British Judge Thomas Walker, who was exiled there in early 1700’s and died there in 1721.
