Congrats on the first drive! I have confidence you’ll figure the injectors out soon enough!

Thank you, Tim! I appreciate your vote of confidence! I implemented a temporary fix in the meantime, so I've been driving the car quite a bit. She's a ripper! Long term injector fix is TBD, but hopefully I'll get it figured out eventually!

Check fuel pressure with a gauge. Then check that water hasn't made its way into the ECU. I have been trying to solve a bad leak into my ECU and passenger footwell for awhile now and found out it was a couple different sources. The sunroof drains can get plugged and the front right plastic drain pipe goes down the A pillar where it connects to a metal drain tube. This connection has sealant which dries up and disappears over time. Also, the water can travel down the outside of the drain pipe from the roof if there is a leaking sunroof seal. However, I have found a pretty bad leak coming from the windshield seal, a seal made using both rubber and urethane sealant, both of which crack, shrink, and dry out over time. Also, the front windshield also has a laminated sealing area, the black part you can see around the edge of the windshield. This laminate fails and water can get in through there as well. And, yes, the water can get in there despite having to travel against gravity due to capillary action. I'm in the process trying to reseal the windshield using a product that was recommended to me from someone at Rennlist: Captain Tolley's Creeping Crack Cure. It gets into small cracks through capillary action and so far, it's amazing to watch it crawl uphill under the windshield glass and spread out. Hopefully, it seals the leaks! And I've never heard of the issue you're having which is weird as most 944 problems are well documented on the forums and they're usually very fixable, both quickly and cheaply. There is none of the cryptic, grey areas of uncertainty or secrecy that is found in the 996/986 world which I'm sure you're aware of. Good luck solving your running problem and I would really not drive that car with a leaking injector after all of the 944s I've read about that burn down right in front of owner's eyes. Even if you put it out with an extinguisher, the extinguishing agent will destroy things. So, so many 944s have been ruined from this problem; check out the horror threads on rennlist and pelican!

Hey Bobby! Thanks for the detailed comment; much appreciated! I do plan to check with a fuel pressure gauge next to make sure to confirm that's not the problem. Also, good to know about all of the possible water intrusion areas. Fortunately, the DME didn't seem to have any water in it when I inspected it. It appears to be fully functional as well, so hopefully that's the case. Thank you for your concern of driving with the leaky injectors! I assure you, I was not about to let the car catch on fire; I was containing the fuel, and both drives were very short. I was being much more careful than I led on :) Besides, had to follow through with my promise of driving it! Thanks again for the comment, and for watching along! I appreciate you!

Some people say this is the result of a bad fuel pressure regulator....pressure is too high and the injectors draw too much current so the DME drivers shut down to avoid damage. You pull one injector and now the overall draw is less and the car will run. I had a similar issue on my 944 with "rebuilt" injectors that were not bosch (even though they were advertised as such they did not have bosch PN). The car would run on 3 rebuilt injectors and one of the old ones but not on all four rebuilt injectors. I finally got 4 genuine rebuilt bosch injectors and it worked fine.

Yup, that's my exact symptom. Fuel pressure does not appear to be the issue, but sounds identical to what your situation was. Thank you for your input! I really appreciate it.

Good perseverance on your troubleshooting and good luck with continuing at it. I can't imagine trying to do that while trying to film things. Is the mic new? I can't remember seeing it before and the audio was better on this video. Congrats on the Redline sponsorship.

Thanks Justin!! Yes, the mic is new. I have another mic I’ve used for a long time, but I can’t attach it to myself, so placement gets hard when working under the hood sometimes. It’s good to know the audio quality increase is noticeable with the new one!

Fuel pressure issue perhaps? New injectors could have more powerful spray. So fuel pump or bad vent in tank?

I have a similar theory, although I think there’s a chance they actually flow less, so pressure is too high… potentially… need to measure rail pressure to find out for sure. Checked pump and vent though, all seem to be functioning properly. I like where your head is at though!

@@FunAhead_TV_Official You said the resistance of the new injectors is the same as the old, how about the impedance since the injector is basically a solenoid? Did you check? A different impedance can result in a different required current that might trip the DME/ECU. Hope you figure it out!

The new ones seem to perform the same as the old, electronically. I didn’t highlight it too much, but the nozzle on the new ones is very different. So I’m thinking it has to do with fuel pressure. TBD though… it’s been a saga hahaha. I appreciate you thinking this out with me!

@@FunAhead_TV_Official +1 on the resistance I have a whole video on my channel that talks about sourcing proper fuel injectors because some of these websites say they are compatible and I also found out the hard way that they aren’t. So here’s my .02 Verify pressure at the rail with the car off and pump jumpered using the dme relay jumper should be around 35psi something like 50 would be an obvious issue. I don’t think the fuel pump check valve is the issue, but if you find that your pressure is actually too low then that’s where I’d look. If rail pressure checks out then you can 100% now focus on the injectors and the electronics surrounding them. The 86’ NA fuel injector part number is 280 150 158 that’s the Bosch part number. Make sure that’s the exact number on those injectors, if it isn’t, they are not proper for the car, and even though their ohm readings may be within spec, the flow rate could be completely off. Someone could’ve tried swapping injectors before and ran into the same issue you have now and that could’ve been why they parked it. The proper impedance reading should be around 2.9 ohms or the NA injectors. If you see 3.5 or 4 they are 944 turbo injectors and will cause your injector driver to shut down/ only run on 3 injector symptom. You said the nozzles look different that 100% is a red flag to me that they might be 928/ mustang injectors. Also to verify your brand new Regulator isn’t defective, you can pull the vacuum line off of it with the car running and see if any liquid gas comes out. If not your regulator is doing its job correctly! The last bit of info I can try to give you is that again double check those part numbers, because even if the impedance is right, if the flow rate is different, the actual physical injection pulse rate might not be what the DME thinks is putting out as. That could also be the cause of your rough idle issue, I swapped my injectors for 4 pot ones and the car drove great but idled like garbage. Okay I think I covered everything I could! Welcome to what it’s like being a 944 owner, the road down to becoming a masochist lol. I related so much when you said you wanted to roll the damn thing off a cliff we’ve ALL been there 😂😂😂😂 but then you go out and drive it and it just gets right under your skin. Good luck and awesome video series! P.s. saw you wearing a blink shirt in one of the first videos right on 👍🏻

Wow wow wow!! Thank you so much for all of your input! I'll definitely check out your content about sourcing injectors. Crazy thing about the injectors is, even though the nozzle is different, the P/N is the same as the old ones, 280 150 158, and the resistance checks out to be exactly 2.9ohms.. same as what my old ones read. The car still runs right as rain with the old injectors... idle, driving, return to idle, blipping, etc. So I'm almost certain it's an issue centered specifically around the new injectors. Any time I have a combination of old with new FVD injectors, it favors the new ones and fires only the cylinders with the new ones. I can run up to 3 of the new ones, but not 4. So going back to old electrical fundamentals, the path of least resistance is always taken, so supposedly the new injectors are that path, given they're the only ones that fire off. YET I plug in the 4th and nothing happens so there's too much power draw?? Giving the symptom of the classic fuel pressure issue. I think it's a combination of just slightly different electrical characteristics, with different fuel flow, so the balance is thrown off. Thank you for taking the time to throw in your 0.02 on this! I appreciate it very much. Nice catch on the Blink shirt too haha.
