That doesn't need fish plates. The welding is a bit messy but should be good enough. The top flange is awkward and most professional welders (which I am not) would use MMA with a bent rod to get at it.

It is a 90a flux core welder.. its hard welding up or down with it versus side to side. So they kinda look like that i have to weld at a slow wire speed to pen good.. So it doesnt make dime stacks like that. But due to it being 3/16th steel.. it only pens half way. So i welded both sides to be sure. Just wanted to be sire it didnt need plating. Because the bumper hitch bolts to that brown section i welded on.. and if i put a trailer on it.. all the tongue weight and pulling weight is on this peice

Watched a few of your videos on this Jeep, good job using what is available to you. The crossmember you put in looks okay but those rear spring hangars are scary, did you make those up too?! It looks like you welded the crossmember from the top down as your weld pattern indicates, when welding vertical joints on thicker material you should always weld from the bottom up. When you weld from the top down like you did there is very little fusion, it's easier to do but doesn't yield a strong joint. Guess it's better to scab together an old junker before you start working on nicer projects. Too bad about your finger, hope you heal quickly!

Youre only seeing one section of welds on the hangar those stupid little arms on the bottom. Youre not seeing the whole thing. That bottom peices i agree look bad and im ebarassed by it. I almost feel like redoing those welds on those two I I peices youre probsbly reffering too Im using flux core.. welding up is very hard to do without it blobing i havent figired out how to do that yet. Go look at my newer vid youll get a better idea of my welds where i rebuilt one c channle frame. And how i built the hangars.. Theyre not bad. What was bad was the condition of the hangars prior.. in my newer picture vid youll see the before hangar and after Yea local welder who did pipeline stuff yesturday said to go up on the welds. But he also said what i did should be fine. I welded both sides of the metal not just one side. And i saw the peices melt together. I went very slow on the wire speed to make sure it did. As for my hangars. Ive had 2000+ lbs in the bed while offroad over divits and uneven ground driving into the woods and over a field (carrying logs) and the hangars held fine. I bottomd out my new springs with the coil over shocks i have. Also had 2000lbs in the back at the dump according to the scale.. and nothing happened.

@@jeepsblackpowderandlights4305 Welding up takes practice, it's not easy but absolutely can be done with flux core or any other process. Good job to you using what you have, everyone starts somewhere. Those little inexpensive flux core welders can be capable, spend more time on prepping and cleaning the joint and you will find it yields a much better result. Your joint on the crossmember is actually pretty important when you consider all the leverage your bumper puts on that piece you replaced. All the forces are going to be pulling and twisting from the top down anytime you tow something and reverse of that anytime you have a load in the bed. It will be prone to cracking on the top and bottom, maybe add some flat bar strapping to the top and bottom flange of the c channel overlapping your weld joint.

@@WeldingFan79 oh yes what you said about that rear cross member i knew.. i was wondering if i should brace the top and bottoms because the bumper is litterally bolted right on this entire peice.. The bumper hitch. Im not sure what these factory bumpers are rated for though. The ball on it says 3500lbs.. but thats the ball not sure if the bumper is rated 3500 as well. I know ny wagoneer has a factory v style hitch.. rated 750 tongue 7500lbs. That frsme i also had to do multiple repairs on back by that hitch.. and where the hitch bolts to the frame c channle.. and the shackles had to be rebuilt.. and it pulled this J10 home on a flat bed fine.. 6500lbs total when i weighed it.. with 1000lbs in the back.. hell i might just diamond fiahs plate the center too.. only takes a few min to do right ? Did you look at my latest vid ? It has pics of the frame welds i did they dime stacked.. my best welds ever.. Should i redo these welds on the cross member or am i making it worse by rewelding them up ?
