The black Roki filter is the good one, though Subaru dealers will often use the blue Frams instead. Subaru oil changes are so nice and easy- especially if you throw a fumoto drain valve on the oil pan.

There should be another drain plug that you should've used further towards the passenger side, that would not have drained the coolant onto the skid plate bar.

You definitely don’t want that blue filter on your Subaru. It’s a subpar quality filter. Use the Japan made ones only

Tomahawk72 is correct. The black Subaru oil filters are imported from Japan. The blue oil filters are North America produce, currently made by Fram. (Supposedly not great quality.) Also, supposedly there’s a supply chain shortage of Subaru (blue filters) oil filters. Supposedly, even at the Subaru dealerships, they may be using other oil filters in lieu of their own.

The black oil filter is the OEM japanese which is far more superior than the blue oil filter made by fram.

Black filter is better MADE IN JAPAN. Blue one is Made in USA. Both are fine to use. I have seen a video on KZitem a man chopped both oil filters and Black one Made in Japan was better wuality built.

I have the same 2015 WRX with 101K miles on it currently. Number of mods done on it. Oil system along with cooling systems are all OEM as I haven't felt a need to upgrade those items as I'm not putting out a ton of power. As others have stated the black filter is better constructed. I use Motul 8100 X-Clean 5w30 in my car. It runs great in it and have done Blackstone UOA tests every so often. Comes back great. Used to use the stock oil and results on this oil are great can't complain. I use one of those magnetic oil drain bolts as well. For coolant I use the Subaru super coolant 50/50 mix along with the recommended conditioner. I've only done a drain and fill. Next change I do this will be also changing the thermostat as it is original. Hopefully the thermostat doesn't have any issues until then. My stock battery only lasted 2 years. I live in NYS but figured the battery should of lasted longer. Currently been using a red top Optima battery. Its been in there for over 5 years. It may be starting to show its age but overall it still reliably provides enough CCA to start the car and have it run good.

My understanding is that the black oil filter is made in Japan (Roki) and is the proper filter for turbocharged FA series engines. The blue filters are for the naturally aspirated FA series engines and will work, but won't last as long. I've been told they get used when the black filters are out of stock. Running a blue filter for 3k miles won't do damage necessarily, but most enthusiasts and independent mechanics agree you should always get the black Roki Japan filters whenever possible. A good reference is MrSubaru's video on oil filters where he cuts several open to compare materials and construction.

Am I crazy or does he have ~140k miles/11 years on that coolant? Need to double check my maintenance schedule lol Great video - for those struggling with the placement of the coolant drain, just go ahead and remove that skid plate, it’s easy

The blue tall one that the dealership installed is somehow what the dealership gives you if you ask for an oil filter for the WRX, but it is not designed for a high psi engine. You have to specifically ask for the black filter or give them the part number in order to receive the Japanese version black filter, and the quality is a lot better.

I’ve heard of oil filter differences like that but possibly a manufacturer sourcing vs area/regional distribution and cost capping. Regional outsourcing to fit the demands here in the US like Fram to the manufacturer/dealers. I’d preferably go with what was intended like the black label, because the oil would hold thru the block w/ less filtration volume to go thru plus it has reliable internals vs the blue labels if I recall.

I did oil change on my friend's BRZ and it had the flat, black filter on it (like you had on your hand). Previously serviced by the dealer in Vancouver. Perhaps, that blue one wasn't for WRX but still usable?

Brandon Petrilla 0 seconds ago The black 190 filter is the correct one for the FA20, The 170 filter is for the BRZ engines, no idea why the dealer installed the blue tall 15A filter, I heard there was an oil filter shortage just when you thought you heard it all

There are many different oil filters, some have back flow set ups, or maybe there is a update to that filter set up? the cheap filters are used by dealerships, dont let the name brand fool you, I only use Wix filters, for all my vehicles, some will swear by Fram, all depends on the BS they try to sell you. All filters are designed to filter the particles in your engine, change them regularly and it will be fine.
