What I've found with shunting circuits and stabling sensors is that the circuit starts in the direction that the train is travelling. So even if you just send the train straight to the station instead of shunting it first like what you suggested at the end, you're going to need to add a signal on the other end of the platform in order to start the shunting circuit for the trains. Because that missing signal is what the stabling sensor will use to queue up the shunting commands, since the train is travelling in that direction.

If you hover over the route contracts on a conductor office and you know you don't want that contract, instead of opening it (with left click) and rejecting it, you can right click to reject it directly without opening the route configurator.

If satisfactory taught me anything about trains, it is to have many signals on a line, that way you can several trains moving on a single line at a time. I know apples and oranges, but the principal is the same. If trains are 2 squares long you should have signals, I'd say, every 4 blocks. That way when a train clears the segment another train can enter that segment. This works best if you have parallel tracks going dedicated directions. You can space the signals farther apart on areas of less traffic and tighten them in areas of high traffic. Though I'm not familiar with how rail route works fully and this is something to test in a sandbox like mode, but my gut feeling is saying you don't have enough signals to maximize your network.

I've noticed that when the trains are being shunted, they have a max speed of 30 and the direction they are facing doesn't matter. just letting you know before you start to rearrange your shunting.

The routing sensors (including the ones on platforms) have options for copy-and-paste, as well as copying to nearby sensors. Useful for the typical situation where you want every platform at the same station to have the same configuration.

I didn’t see that ability there.

@@CharliePryor Pretty tough to spot. Buttons for it are part of the main popup window for the sensor, above the name of the sensor in dark colors.

the problem with the stabling sensor in the stations is that one end doesn't have a signal, and the train arrive to that signal and the stabling sensor uses that one to issue the shunting commands, i had the same problems as you when using the stabling sensor, it didn't seem to work

At 7:20 if you look, I think you have the wrong signal selected. You want to go out the left side of the station, but you see the box is just a + symbol, meaning that signal isn't part of your commands to send the train to Dupont. I apologize if you figured this out later in the video, and I could be wrong too. 🤷♂️

Now that I've started using shunting... damn, that stuff can be fragile. With my setup, I haven't had problems with commands being put into the queue, but somehow the trains often end up in some weird location with an error saying that the next shunting command isn't possible. Will likely have to play around with it and watch it closely to figure out what's going on.

At 7:30, shouldn’t Dupont be both the origin and direction? It still needs to be at/go to Dupont before it can go to Benning.

Have you noticed that backing the train into the station causes a delay? It's probably better to offload the train first and then use the downtime to turn it around. Great series. Keep it up!

Can offset that with faster tracks though. It’ll arrive on time.

I haven't used much shunting yet but I'm pretty sure you need to use the shunting track and have to send it to a shunting group to use the stabling sensor.

You don't need any groups for the sensor to function. You simple need the same hardware as the stabling sensor has. The difference between this hardware is that the shunting sensor impacts the train as it goes over it, meaning before entering a platform, and the stabling sensor puts in commands after the train has reached the platform. The commands you can give these two tools, and their limitations, are identical.

I’m only 8 minutes in, but is it possible the automatic thing isn’t working because the train is backed into the station which maybe doesn’t match the configuration you have selected?

7:06 Right before the junction (bottom/right hand side) put an arrival sensor + auto signal and have the shunting thing make the trains go to there instead of the station they will then move on to the station on the chosen platform
