This is a statement that I have heard said over and over in the past 4 years. I hear it in recovery, but it applies. Hear me out.
When we get into gardening (or anything really), it makes a lot of sense to follow a bunch of gardeners on social media. It keeps gardening in the forefront of our mind, shows us what is possible, and just plain makes us happy to see all the garden photos.
For a while it helps us formulate plans in our heads:
what we want to grow
how we want our garden to look
whether we want food or herbs, or both
where we'll get our seeds
what we'll use to fertilize
etc., etc., etc.
All good stuff.
BUT --there's another thing that can happen with some of us "squirrely brained" gardeners... we start buying the things and doing stuff, and run into problems we don't know how to solve.
"I know! I'll see what those amazing gardeners on social media do about this!" you say.
But when you start looking into it, asking around, etc., you find that there are MYRIAD ways to deal with your problem and can't figure out which one is best.
Chances are, they probably all work. But you don't know this because you're new. You've never dealt with this before.
That's where my first comment comes in.
It's MUCH easier and less overwhelming to choose just one person to take advice from. This could be:
a neighbor who is successfully growing what you want to grow
your favorite podcaster/blogger
the author of your favorite gardening book
anyone else who you "speaks to you" with their teaching style
You'll want to make sure they can speak to your zone (they don't have to be in your zone).
Why do I say this? Because there are TONS of fantastic gardeners out there and you can follow them all. But if you are overwhelmed with all of the information you are exposed to every day, you'll need to quiet the voices and tune into just one.
This will help the squirrelyest of squirrels to get on track with a plan they can carry out every day. This will make gardening much more manageable.
It doesn't matter who you choose, there are lots of gardeners with lots of teaching styles out there! Find the one that is the best fit for you and dive in!
