Well, I didn't have a natural vibrato. But I discovered this technique accidentally when I was hitting a note and randomly did what you're teaching in this video. And over time, now I actually have developed a relatively slow but consistent vibrato just trying to consciously do what happens when you poke your stomach. If you practice it daily, it should even work in like a couple of months.

I read a ton of stories of people trying to develop vibrato only to give up and then usually a couple of years of later having vibrato show up on its own. After that they then began to learn how to control it. Same happened to me. Dont "learn" vibrato. Learn how to sing, and vibrato will show itself when it's time amd you're ready. Trying to force it will teach you bad technique that will transfer to everything else

Thanks for the comment! That's an anecdote that is very common as you said. For many people it settles in naturally as they sing more and more. However, there are other anecdotes of people learning it differently through an instigated process. Just because it worked that way for you and others does not invalidate the experience other people have had where it developed differently. There is more than one way to skin a cat, so to speak. Usually developing some form of laryngeal vibrato is a first step but often advanced singers want to do things like control the speed and 'width' (how large the pitch oscillation is) and this is where, even for them, focusing on conscious vibrato control becomes very useful training. Take care! -Gregory

Vibrato is one of the few things I can do easily even with no vocal training or really much knowledge of vocals at all. I actually have a hard time resisting adding vibrato to literally any note longer than a half note. Do you have any tips on how to make your voice interesting without adding a heck ton of vibrato to everything? 😅

When I was in my younger years of choir, I had the same problem. I’m a guy, and I was the only one who even knew of the concept of vibrato. It was kind of embarrassing because no one else sang, so when we went up to forte, I would belt out on pitch with vibrato. I didn’t know how to control it. It sounded good, but I needed to learn more about it.

Without having any sort of academic or professional background in singing, just with my logic and experience, I would tell you to play around with dynamics more. Maybe encompass different techniques depending on the song and the style you want to go for. Basically some variation right, so like add some glissando where there isn't a lot or vice versa, growl/distortion, head voice-y bits in a mostly belting section, etc.

This is Diaphragmatic vibrato which isn’t bad, but isn’t considered true vibrato. True vibrato is from the vocal fold oscillation itself and is found through relaxing the extraneous muscles and proper balance of airflow.

Another tip I would mention is to expand the rib cage a bit when doing this technique to help keep it consistent, and eventually build up speed. Keep good breath support and focus this "vibrato" (it's technically tremolo, if I'm being autistic about it lol) on the solar plexus. There are other ways to achieve vibrato, but I prefer this technique because it gives me the fastest oscillations, to achieve that fast vibrato sound.

Use a metronome and slowly speed up. You can practice doing one vibrato speed two ways: In the first, pulse the breath pressure as advised here. In the next, do not pulse the pressure (don't use the ab flex) but make sure you still move the pitch in rhythm. This will make it "laryngeal vibrato" where you use the muscles inside your larynx to produce the pitch change. Start with a metronome on a slow BPM of 100 in 4/4 time. There's another video on this channel where I talk more about vibrato training in depth if you search for it. Hope this helps! -Gregory

From my understanding vibrato should come from proper breath support and control. So you might feel it in your throat but it should be a result of you changing the amount of air that is being pushed through that is causing your vocal chords to oscillate and not from you actively trying to manipulate anything in the chords. That’s why I think he said push on the solar plexus because that will force a difference in air pressure that is being pushed out. I still haven’t gotten a reliable vibrato so take what I say with a grain of salt 😅 Some singers do manipulate their vocal chords to get the vibrato sound but I think that is considered tremolo. I think Stevie Nicks uses this.

It's a change in air pressure, not airflow. And changing the air pressure is one of the ways we change pitch. It is a change in both volume and air pressure, thus still a vibrato. It is another type of vibrato, but this can easily become a semantic game.

Sorry but in all honesty you can’t be serious about this?? I mean no front you can sing very well and your journey is truly an inspiration for me as an aspiring musician but this is just so wrong. Vibrato should be the result of the sound resonating freely within your cavities. It should come naturally and not be forced, especially not in such a manner by actively contracting different muscles.
