My dad was a technician on an research farm. The cattle were used to horses not people on the ground. Dad unknowingly went into the pasture to herd them into another pasture. A young bull was spooked by the two- legged critter. He chased Dad over the fence. Knee surgery and weeks of rehab. A lesson for all.

Wow what beautiful country! Your angles are good! Those cows can be tricky! I’m a Wisconsin cowboy! I know about trees! Lol I lost 10 cows in a state park for Almost 10 days in Snowy December! I tracked them for days! They came back on day 10! 😢🤣

Great video Trinity that sure was a awesome cattle drive . Beautiful country but a lot of trees and brush really makes it hard driving the cattle. They don’t have any dogs seam like they work well getting cattle out of the brush 👍

Yes. Calibar is getting better all the time. It just takes an enormous amount of riding and training for a horse to become really good.

Wow, those cattle just didn't want to go anywhere they were supposed to go. I'd be wearing safety glasses going thru that woods. I've received many a corneal abrasion charging thru brush chasing my English Pointers on foot for pheasant.

Generally, how much additional weight can a horse like Calibar handle? Rider, equipment plus whatever else.
@LifeintheWest
Жыл бұрын
Calibar is alot bigger than he looks on camera. He could carry more weight than he is carrying now, and he carries that much weight for 15 hours in a day sometimes while doing hard work. Right now with me and the equipment he is carrying around 240 lb. Live weight, ( A person who moves with the animal ) is easier to carry than dead weight, like packs on a pack saddle, for example.

Back in 1963, when I was gathering cows south of the Hoback canyon in Wyoming, with my boss's son ,( he was older than I ) every time we came to a creek his horse would stop & take a drink, & I says to him , " your horse sure drinks a lot"; & he says to me , "A drinkin' horse is a doin' horse". Your remarks about watering reminded me of that.

This doesn’t look like the movies. Looks like you’re trying to herd cats.😂 Every time Trinity came to a branch, I would duck. It was exhausting. Thanks, it was great fun and it seemed Calibar did a good job, too.

you can really see the difference between moving cows with and without cattle dogs. those dogs are worth gold. i could imagine them getting into those trees and brush much easier than a cowboy and his horse. fascinating. trinity, i've seen these videos on youtube where one or more humans play music and you see the cows coming to the sound of the music and standing there taking in the music. someone should try an experiment in trying to move cattle by drawing them to the music. just thinking out loud. this was fun! love calabar!

Back when I was a young man several of us were rounding up a bunch of steers that hadn’t seen a human in 2 years. Thankfully we had a good team of dogs to help us. The steers were running on about 1500 acres and it had a whole lot of thorn thickets. A buddy of ours was pushing a group through a thicket and had to get off his horse to walk him through where the cows had a trail. He looked up and 1 was coming back down the trail and no place to go. The steer ran over him and his horse with 3 dogs behind him. Needless to say they were banged up pretty good. We got him and the horse out and back to the trailer gave each first aid. Then pinned what we out close to the pins loaded up and moved them to a pin where we had water for them. It took us a week to get all but 1 out of there. It was a hard week but we had a lot of good times and ribbing each other about things that happened to all of us especially the guy and his horse getting mauled.

@Trinity: *Question* - How much does a typical Saddle weigh? And is yours a 'typical Saddle,' or Custom made? And your fully loaded Saddle Bags? Thank You 😁
@LifeintheWest

My saddle is custom and made for being able to rope and hold large cows if needed. This adds some weight. My saddle and fully loaded saddle bags are probably about 30-40 lbs.

Thank you. This reminds me so much of when I was younger. In tight spots, like that timber, when we had a good horse, we would dismount and move through the thick stuff on foot. Reins were tied to a stirrup iron and the horse would work the edge of the timber.
