What? Underrated? As compared to what? When this first came out in 2000 it got rave and positive reviews from every single entertainment reporter. It doubled it's budget at the box office. And it's cast was absolutely first rate.....loaded with A-listers. So I genuinely have no idea how you can claim, with a straight face, that it's underrated when virtually everyone whose ever seen it comes away with a good feeling and are glad they viewed it. Underrated? I don't think so.

This is the movie that made me realize my love of literature was okay. I was very smart, in every advanced course, school was so boring it was almost a joke to me, but I was also a star athlete. I loved all kinds of literature and I loved to write, but it made me feel like something was wrong with me. People didn’t expect that from me. I wrote a short story my junior year in high school and it was very elaborate, it was so good that my AP teacher literally asked me if I wrote it or took it from someone else. There was an entire different world in my head that I loved for my entire life and I felt ashamed in a way because it wasn’t what I was supposed to be interested in. I always loved this movie because Jamal reminded me of myself.

In the movie Jamal is suspected of plagiarism, and humiliates the teacher in this video. The teacher is revealed to be himself a failed writer and is probably jealous of and threatened by Jamal’s obvious ability and intellect. The race of the characters has nothing to do with it.
@telliastacticalfirearmsand2039
2 жыл бұрын
@@fishwatch8677 I respectfully disagree regarding your race of the characters has nothing to do with it. Would thus professor call into question plagiarism had the been white, affluent? Your honest opinion, please. Not to go into a diatribe, when it comes to black intellect, the intellect has always been met with skepticism married with ignorance on the part of the critic. The professor dismissed Jamal because of his, the professor's, bias regarding black men, in this case a black athlete. How is it possible that a ghetto kid know the writings of such noted 19th and 20th century authors, Hawthorne, Poe, Shakespeare, Hemingway, Frost, Keller, etc? It defies the professor's logic of things. In fact the professor is operating from a egocentric perspective, wouldn't you say? A more interesting question would be to query this professor and ask him if he's abreast with Baldwin, Morrison, Haley, Hansberry, etc? Assuming if he claims himself to be well read, how would he fair? I know I said no diatribe....but hey.
@fishwatch8677
2 жыл бұрын
@@telliastacticalfirearmsand2039 Yes, my honest opinion is that the professor would accuse a white student of plagiarism as I’m given no reason to think his actions are motivated by race. I’m starting to think you yourself are speaking from a place of ignorance, since it seems clear to me that you haven’t seen the movie. I’ve given you two reasons, shown in the film, for why the teacher dislikes Jamal. You are simply stating that he has a bias, but not offering anything from the movie that demonstrates this. If the filmmakers wanted us to know the professor is racist perhaps they would have shown a white student plagiarising someone’s work or humiliating him and getting away with it.
