I've been to that roadcut a number of times, a great spot! Love that orange calcite, and the really large tremolite.

Wow, thank you. As always, great information presented well. I hope to get to your area in the future and find some specimens for my collection!!

I would not have gone up there either except i'd found a decent little crystal there last time (on the face) and I went back up to look at the spot and realized that somebody had been digging at the top, it now occurs to me that there must be a whole layer just about 2 feet beneath the surface, and probably centered above the orange calcite that has been altered and is crystal bearing.

I've found some great tremolite and blue apatite there.

Probably corundum prism we have rubies out here in the California mountains that look like that that are technically corundum because ours aren't clear enough to be considered rubys lots of them though all over the mountains out here

In Bancroft area, corundum is usually in pegmatities, whereas the calcite melts in the area often contain apatite. I think that's why he assumes apatite. Plus a simple hardness assessment will easily determine if it's corundum, but wouldn't easily discern apatite from fluorite, which was his other, earlier guess. Though I agree with his reasoning "you don't see fluorite as a prism".

That is possible as there is corundum in the area - I guess I'm leaning toward red apatite. I might dissolve some calcite from around the prism to get a better look at the surface of the prism and some of the other embedded crystals. I prefer a mystery to a straight identification - it's where I get the greatest satisfaction.

Hello my friend it's Wes, ironic enough we were just there Saturday as well as Titanite hill. If you can give me your email I can show you pics of what we found at both places. We found some good finds from both as well as a little radioactive monster from the Silver Crater.

Actually, it's melting really fast. I took the video on Thursday and it's now the following Tuesday and there has been a significant melt. I live far south of this spot, but I would imagine the snow will have cleared from here by the end of this coming weekend.
