Hi Orla, thank you for producing such lovely videos about your life and art process. I rather new-ish to painting and I'm attracted to abstract work. I also live in northern Canada where I'm surrounded by incredible wilderness. When I think about making art outdoors, and I look out into the landscape, I'm often overwhelmed by what I see a-- so many details, textures, colours, and I don't know where to start. I'm not interested in realism but I when I'm in the outdoors, I like the idea of somehow capturing what I'm seeing and feeling. Your videos and ideas are a good guide for me. Perhaps I need only to capture colour and lines and be satisfied with those results. Question: do you use a fixative after you've used oil pastels in your work? Enjoy your autumn season!

Thanks so much for watching! Glad it resonates with you 😊 wow, it looks like an incredible part of the world, I’d love to visit sometime. You’ll be spoilt for inspiration! It can definitely get overwhelming: I’ve actually got a drawing challenge all about zooming in to the land scape, which you might find handy as a starting point. I’ve outlined the challenge on my substack and in another video on my channel with some prompts. It might work well for you as a warm up ☀️

Hello on this beautiful morning. Could you tell me the name of the coloured pencil I saw you using. Love the feeling in your work.

Hello! Yes of course, it’s a Pablo by caran d’ache :) they have a lovely pigment and sit great on top of gouache ✨

Great idea, but I am not sure what you do…first you say you want to paint out door, but I see you paint the small sketches indoor? Gouache?

Hello! Sure thing; I do both. My outdoor work is always more research based, and I take this back to the studio to develop things further into final paintings. I've made a few videos on my outdoor researching process, feel free to check them out :) Yes, these ones are gouache

Such a great idea for an explorative series. I think I might "borrow" your idea of using a word 🙄😳😁

I like the idea of a word also. And I think it'll make me really focus better. Thanks for that idea.

oh; this was so good for my soul. i feel so much of what you’re saying. my interest in basically the same things has brought me back to myself, i’ve really been struggling with materials and what i like to use; so much so that i didn’t feel what i was making. (does that make sense?) i love how we’re interested in the same things & make entirely different work. it’s completely normal and natural, but it makes me smile; such different colours and shapes but i can feel that the intention and interest is the same. can i ask where you live? approximately, of course… it’s just that your surroundings look so wonderful. i’m someone who needs to be able to look far away, but that is kind of impossible where i currently live. i don’t drive, maybe that’s my problem. anyway, fantastic video. very inspirational. look forward to your upcoming videos! So glad it resonated with you, and you've found a way back to yourself in your work :) Have you figured out the materials that fit you now? aww it's the beauty of art right? you can give the same instruction to a million people and it'll never be the same result! It's funny; my art used to be much quieter, but it wasn't sitting right, and I've recently took what felt like a brave step to explore colour in the way that feels good. Of course; I'm based in the Trossachs National Park - some of the footage is from previous trips up north on the west coast, and on Orkney. Maybe you could also gather film footage to work from if you take trips away? thanks for your lovely comment and all the best with the art making!

@@OrlaStevensit is funny; for me it was the other way around, i felt like i had to use, you know, the primaries to mix colours. but i’ve never been interested in realism, and it has been a long way figuring out that i can just buy and use the colours i want to use, that i don’t have to use primaries to mix them (primary colours in my paint box just put me off…). i guess finding one’s own way is just a part of the process. i’m not sure my art is quiet but it’s definitely not loud when it comes to colours. i’m more interested in darker tones, muted colours (it changes though. guess it depends on my mood..). i find it hard to call the things i do my art because right now i’m just doing lots of sketches & i’m not sure where it’s all going. anyway, the sketches i usually do with colored pencils and neocolors, but i really love watercolour so i’m trying to find a way. i do take pictures etc, sometimes, i often forget or just don’t want to; i want to put the landscape in my body, not in my phone. and it just worked differently, doesn’t it, a picture vs actually being outside to draw what you see. feeling like you’re being a part of the landscape is so important and beautiful, and it just feels… off when i’m just looking at the impression of a moment on a screen. i guess i could try to use them to mentally go back. i should try that. thank *you* for the inspiring videos! Totally; developing your own colour voice is such a game changer. I’m really interested in the links between colours, sounds and emotions, and that’s how I tend to use colour. That’s an exciting stage though; so much experimentation & play. & I so agree; the full immersion & embodiment is what it’s all about, and makes the deep and meaningful work. Exactly; that’s what I do, it’s like a way to help hop back to that moment and just work from memory & improvise from there :)
