Just back from Oahu and eating a lot of shave ice. My fave was island vintage for sure. Especially the ones with the frozen yoghurt soft serve. Special mention to Monster Ice for their mango shave ice. Non-traditional, but soooooooo good.

So our favorite shave ice is Uncle Clays cause of the natural syrup, we dont feel the heavy although yummy high frutose feeling after eating there, although snice covid I feel like it got just a tiny bit smaller. When in Waikiki we like Ice Monster although it’s Taiwan’s style. We had Vintage Island cause TabiEats showed it which was really good but both our tummys got upset last time we went so have been staying away. In Kailua we just go Kailua General Store, they have house flavors and their ginger is so good and strong but best paired with some other flavor, although they didnt make the natural house flavors during covid, hope they are making them again, i’ll have to check. In town we go Waiola cause near but I agree with Amanda its not the same and since covid that cup size doesnt do it for me. Haleiwa’s Matsumoto’s stepped it up for sure! Although if the line is too long Aoki’s is our go to! Thank you for this yummy refreshing shave ice episode!

Never tried Matsumoto but it does look better now. My favorite in order was Waiola, Ice Garden, and Shimazu, I agree that both Waioloa and Ice Garden doesn’t feel up with syrup well but the fine shave ice is what makes shave ice good to me. Shimazu was great for the price, couldn’t handle the biggest one but even the size before was enjoyable and the cost was the best part. I must put Island Vintage the next time I visit :)

Matsumoto - our family stopped going when they got too big. It’s cheap because they make $ on merch. Might try again if the ice is better - it would get beady and solid. Aoki’s - prefer over Matsumoto’s as North Shore shave ice spot +mochi bites! Shimazu - a family go-to spot ❤ the haupia cap! the Larry was INSANE! My sister DROPPED the Larry 😂, but they were really nice and remade. Waiola - they do have soft snowy ice, but sometimes there was white in the middle…classic family standard 🍧 Main Oahu spots still main Oahu spots! 🤙🤙🤙🤙 Gotta try the others soon.

Itʻs funny to hear you guys reminisce about the shave ice you had as kids. You know Iʻm a different generation because the shave ice of my small kid time was only 10 cents, and maybe 5 cents more for azuki. I always got the plain blue one (I didnʻt know it was vanilla)because I didnʻt like azuki and I donʻt think they had ice cream yet. I donʻt even remember the name of the store we went to the most or if it still exists. I have images of a place like Shimazu Store or Waiola, but I think it must have been in Mōʻiliʻili or McCully on King or Beretania St. because thatʻs near where we lived in Mānoa. We also ate strawberry shave ice (the only flavor they offered) at the Honolulu Zoo when entrance there was free, as was the Aquarium, so a day out with the family at the Zoo and Aquarium only cost 10 cents for shave ice or a soda for each person ! I think hamburgers at the Zoo were 25 cents. We also went to Matsumotoʻs occasionally, and if the line was too long, we went to Aokiʻs down the road. I remember when it cost 25 cents, so we thought the North Shore was kinda expensive. Oh, and they not only had dirt parking lots, there was only one bench outside Matsumotoʻs for people to sit and eat their shave ice. The biggest difference in the original shave ice we grew up with was the paper cones, which leaked and you couldnʻt put them down, so someone inevitably spilled the sticky syrup and melted ice on themselves, or if you didnʻt eat it fast enough, the whole top-heavy ball of ice fell on the ground, bringing tears or words of exasperation. The holders at Aokiʻs today are a necessity. I like a lot of the new choices and different quality of the ice and the syrups today, but a lot of it is too much for me (like all the boba teas and fancy drinks). I just like to keep it rather simple -- finely shaved ice with rainbow or three kinds of syrup and ice cream. The best part of the way shave ice is served today is the bowls or cups. But they gotta have a spoon and straw! 🧁🍨😋

Look what PBS Hawaiʻi just posted on KZitem (the first half of the video) -- Shave Ice at 3 favorite places in 1983 - Waiola, B & S Store (which I donʻt remember) and Matsumotoʻs! Itʻs exactly the way I remember shave ice growing up. The 1983 prices were still under a dollar even with azuki or ice cream, but one of the guys talks about it being a nickel in his small-kid time. It could have been 5 cents for a small and 10 cents for a large shave ice when I was really little. But just ice with some syrup in a paper cone and a choice of plain, azuki, or ice cream at the bottom. No fancy toppings and just a few flavors, though by 1983, they were experimenting with a few more kinds of syrup. Shave Ice (1983) kzitem.info/news/bejne/ypWlraGrioGBhIo

Cool, but my dad would have complained on the scoring. He grew up on O'ahu in the 50s-60s, and his go-to flavor was always strawberry; when we visited as a family, Matsumoto's was our go-to stand from Waimea Bay, but their quality went down around the early 90s, so instead we started the habit of going to Aoki's. I always felt strawberry is too artificial, so I would always go for the strangest combination of flavors that seemed appropriate for my mood, like Li Hing Mui/Melona/Lychee - gotta have that "weird" salty/sour spice, one flavor that's creamy, and one local kine fruit where it's easy to tell if they used artificial flavorings (Lilikoi, Guava, Lychee, etc.). Azuki bean + ice cream 24/7, and I'm not a fan of "snow" - shave ice gotta have crunch, or I get suspicious that it's not ice that has been shaved. I never cared for Ice Garden, but it's my Aunt's go-to spot. I like adding flan, and my Aunt swears by their pineapple topping (which does go well with their flan, but they often run out of flan). Can't fault them for being cheapy with the syrup, since they're old ladies working through their retirement; I'm sure the rent at Aiea Shopping Center is bad. Kind of surprised y'all didn't go to any of the "snow" places, unless they all went out of business, LoL (never cared for those places). Just looking at this, Aoki's gotta still be at the top, simply because they're still old school; shave ice just tastes better in a paper cone, when you have to strategize to avoid dropping ice and shoo'ing away bees. Hate places that put shave ice on styrofoam; our landfills are too big. There used to be a pretty good shave ice place out by Mannichi Ramen by Ala Moana Shopping Center, but I think it's an ice cream place now...not sure if they also do shave ice.

I gotta give Uncle Clay his props. He took over Doe Fang crack seed/Icee store when the owners were gonna close their business. He understood how all the kids enjoyed going there. He took on the financial risk and bought the business to keep the tradition alive for the future generations. He started with adding different toppings to the Icees then moved into shave ice. I was one of those kids back in the 1970’s who would go to Doe Fang with all the neighborhood kids and enjoy the crack seed and icee there. My kids grew up enjoying Uncle Clay’s shave ice. I hope my future grandkids will be able to enjoy eating the shave ice there one day too!

Small kid times memories...would walk from my grandpa's house to Waiola Shave Ice back when the stadium was still nearby.

Another great addition to the "Best of" series! Thanks for scoping out all these great places and letting us know the deets. Now I'm ono for shave ice! 😋 (Btw, I freak out at all the bees too! 🤣)

Hi Amanda and Felix, I hope you both had a great Easter. Shave Ice looks so good, it takes me back to my childhood when we went to carnivals 🤩 Those shave Ice places have awesome selections.
