This was a labor of love y’all! It took me around 18 hours to hand sew on 1,135 scales- but the results are abshellutely mermazing! She shines in the water just like a real fish!! The main things I learned making this hybrid tail were-
1. You loose some of the fabric’s stretch when you sew the scales on, so if you’re between sizes you may want to size up or only sew the scales in groups of 3 or 4 so the stretch isn’t effected as much.
2. Use nylon thread- cotton breaks down in the water.
3. Double stitch each scale (I explain how to do this in the video) so they’re less likely to get lost/fall completely off.
4. You don’t need to overlap a TON- just a bit still looks gorgeous and saves you some scales!
5. Since the elastic waist on their premade tails is so much smaller than the hip area, it works really well to do a blended scale waist- that way it’ll still fit over your hips and you have something not scaled to grip onto when sliding into your tail!
Happy creating fishies!
