Wow Scout love that beam engine. In regard to the media blasting, I was at a flea market and a bloke there had a lot of tools with the rust removed and a slightly oily patina which I liked the look of. He said he used crushed walnut shell in his media blaster. Love your workshop, it looks a crowded as mine. My wife, who is a minimalist, says she doesn’t know how I find anything in there and I tell her I know where everything thing is and I just don’t tell her when I have to re-buy something because I can’t find it 🤣. Really look forward to seeing your videos. Cheers mate, Stuart 🇦🇺

Another great video. I have often wondered why you don't use a 'blaster' on your projects - as so many others do. Your reasons are sound and your results prove it. I prefer the high shine of tools. Using a blaster typically doesn't allow the high shine to be achieved. Some people however are using soft mediums including crushed walnut shells that don't seem to leave pitting, but your method with various wire wheels and various grades of abrasive paper get perfect results. As a finish abrasive you may want to try a leather belt on your sanding machine and add polishing compound. You may have to invest in a pair of sunglasses however, because of the shine you will achieve =). I really like the hand/finger you use as a pointer. Great touch. Michael from Canada

You have done some good work there. Many scouts are not exposed to those kinds of things. Jeweling is nice on aluminum for car dashes. Not so much on things like knife blades unless it is only for display. As to sand blasting it has its place. It is better if you have other mediums to use. Soda blasting can be hard to beat. They made an all in one unit that was always called a liquid hone where I worked. Set up much like a sand blaster but used soda and water under pressure. I have seen a modern unit but its cost is prohibitive to the average guy. Regular soda blasting is to messy. Look forward to your next project.
@ScoutCrafter

Hello 57W! Yes! I think we need to bring back a little jeweling for some fun! Soda blasting looks awesome but like you said is costly. The cost of media for the cabinet blaster has skyrocketed! John, where do I begin? First of all, you have such an extensive knowledge of tools. I thought ::I:: knew tools. I don't know bleep. Then your finger machine that you MADE? It looks like a piece of art. I'm in awe of your talent. I'm eventually going to ask about your tool collection. I mean, what the hell led you to purchase a Dake? Don't get me wrong, I love when you use it. Anyway, great video, great channel, yada yada. Peace.

That little engine is extremely cool. I've wanted my own media blaster for exactly as long as I've known of their existence. They're just too useful to not have access to one. Looking forward to the next candy paint experiment.

Hi Allan! They used to be expensive but HF has them cheap! =) Thanks!!!!

Even cheap will have to wait. Once I have my dream shop set up there'll be one. Even if I had the money for it there is absolutely no room left in the 1/2 of the garage I occupy.

Your finger engine is _awesome_! What a great job you did machining that. Ain't peeling nickel plating the worst? Just like you I much prefer it when it's all gone because it can be a royal PITA to get the remaining bits off!

Hello DG! YES! i swear I would rather have a rusty pliers!!!! Peeling nickel/chrome is the worst! =) Thanks!

Looking forward to the jeweling project. I have tried several approaches, and some are better than others. Do you happen to have a Holtzapffel ornamental lathe in your shop? That would the next step up from jeweling. .

Hello C Clark! Wow! I saw a demonstration of that type lathe at a steam show and thought it was super amazing! What's even more amazing is the mind required to make such a tool!!!! =D Thanks so much!!!!

Hey Scoutmaster - another nice video! Question - for your most cherished hand tools, do you build display cases for them? Wouldn't mind a video tour of how you display your beauties or how you build your display cases!

Oh to just have one hour in your basement! Yas thousands of opinions. Just do your stuff man and us UKers will be happy to look at massive basements we can only dream of

Hello Loxxxton! Yes, I heard not too many basements in the UK... To be honest it's a great area providing you aren't in a low water zone. Being below grade the basement is cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. Natural soundproofing too! I am looking for a HUGE basement for my next home... Thanks!!!!!

Engine turning, used to see it on old car aluminium dashboards from 1930s....could anodise the aluminium too. That nickel plating annoys me too, Stanley 45s always peeling, Chrome is even worse though you rarely see it on tools. Ever tried reverse electolysis to get it off?
@ScoutCrafter

Hi Jim! Yes, me too! The only Nickel I ever seen hold up was Ford Model A headlight rings! Ford was a genius!!!! I never tried reverse Electrolysis! I am always afraid I will blow up the basement from the Hydrogen gas! LOL Does it work? =)

This was the best waste of time all week. 😀 That beam engine is magnificent and the engine turning looks good even with dust on it. So where is the milling machine? I have 2 old South Bend lathes and I've never seen that indexer before. Now you have a whole set of those Kraeuter pliers whats the next set to complete? Great video as usual thanks!

Hi George! I have a mini lathe and mini mill! I will show it soon! They do work great! The Indexer was an accessory offered about 1958 I think... Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!

How about using a different medium than sand in the blaster? Maybe something less aggressive wont cause the rust issue.

Hi Thomas! I tried Glass bead- same problem... You could also use walnut shells and plastic beads but they are very costly... Soda Blasting is good but very expensive.... Its a crap shoot! LOL Thanks!!!!
