This is what I love about small guitar youtubers compared to big ones. There not afraid to share there full knowledge while big ones share there knowledge a little bit and tell you to buy there guitar courses to fully understand it. I know they need to make a living but I'm just grateful that I discover your channel you really helped me especially my guitar playing technique. I'm broke but if I have spare money I would gladly take lessons from you. ❤

It's a difficult one! Personally I'd love to actually set up an online course of some sort because if it's paid for by the consumer I can go way, way more into the detail then I can on KZitem - I don't have the time to film 10 - 15 hours of video with tab etc for free unfortunately! I think a lot of the general stuff for foundational technique out there is pretty poor though, which is what I'm trying to correct. A big part of it is this very over-analytical heavily science based culture we are in at the moment - a lot of this stuff is actually very simple and could do with less complex terminology.

Great approach. So basically is that what is keeping your two small fingers from getting stronger is that the thumb is doing it for them most of the time. The picking part sounds also useful. Even though I always play like that, like chopping through, i think when I'm learning a solo the attempt to be precise and careful can sometimes make me "just hit" the strings.

Hi Ben, I am using #8 strings and my hand is healing so I have been trying some of your techniques. As an old guy just starting, it can be tricky. When I see you have a new video out I enjoy watching which compels me to keep practicing. Best, Vance

Interesting! Ive been giving this a shot the past couple days. I notice if I remove my thumb from the back of the neck and push with my hand I can get that ‘feeling’ you describe a little bit more. Obviously I will not keep that habit up but I think it helps trying to get that motion and feeling down. What do you think? Edit: actually it seems to be more of a pulling motion. Seems like this is standard practice for classical guitarists as well!

Yeah so the thumb is the biggest culprit of bad technique and taking it off the neck is really helpful to start with, I often teach people to start with that in lessons! It basically ends up wherever is comfortable and minimally invasive once you have the hand position sorted - that tends to look something like classical technique but often pointing a bit more towards the headstock.

Any thoughts on classical vs side saddle positioning for ergonomics? Don’t know if you have a vid on that

Not sure what you mean by side saddle - sitting position?

Does the left hand idea apply with legato too? I imagine you'll need more force and wondered how you'd generate that
@Kerriben
2 күн бұрын
It does! You generate the force with a mixture of pulling on the fingers and actually using the muscles that control them - too much of one and not enough of the other leads to speed compromises and it’s a bit trickier to get right but definitely still applies especially with any sort of trill from the fretting hand. I’d recommend going and watching some videos of concert piano players and how they control the third and fourth fingers in very difficult, fast passages. Same concept, just turned upside-down!

I love your vids, especially those about hand techniques. As a new player, your approach to hand techniques allow me to develop a light touch from the beginning, which is my main technique goal. Plus, these techniques allow me to play with mild arthritis in a few of my fingers. Thanks for the invaluable information.
