My Review Of Halo Infinite
6.5/10 Might Play Again
To start off with, the story is a bit below average, nothing too interesting and fairly predictable. But the overarching storyline is where I get lost and disconnected from the game because of how confused I am. I’m an avid halo player and I’ve recently played everything in the master chief collection, but when I was playing Infinite I had no idea. There are many points where they have big cut scenes and pay offs but they mean nothing to me. After my first time playing I watched a recap on what happened in Halo 5 but it didn’t solve the issue.
Infinite was a big change in the series going to an open world focused model. The open world is alright, with a lot of stuff around but quantity is not quality. Once you’ve done one marine rescue you’ve got the most out of that experience, doing the other 20 on the map didn’t make it any better. The strongholds and HVTs were good, but in the end they are go to a place and kill stuff. That is my biggest problem with the open world no matter the event or situation the result is the same, just loud open combat. Compared to many other open world games that give more options to how you approach each situation, making your decisions matter and creating unique experiences. I think the open world could work but they have to fully commit to it and make it a truly special open world.
The overall campaign structure I think is negatively impacted by the open world. If this had been a traditional halo game and the time and resources from making the open world had been focused on creating an unique campaign full of set pieces this could be at least a 8/10. The campaign is desperately lacking in environment diversity and big wow moments. The first half of the campaign I was feeling optimistic, with it exploring a banished ship, a couple forerunner structures, and some open world missions with unique set pieces. It wasn’t anything too crazy but it was fun and new. As you progress further it doesn’t change, it's the same looking open world and the same forerunner structures over and over. By the end I was burnt out from this and just disappointed with every new mission, and I only played like 3 missions a week so I had time to refresh and it didn’t help.
Halo has always been about a great sandbox and the biggest part of that is the vehicles and they felt absent. There was a sole vehicle mission that felt truly uninspired. A dimly lit road that felt extremely bland, while playing epic classic Halo music was a reminder of how far the gameplay had fallen. It felt like a shitty remake of Halo 2 Metropolis except the mission ends when you get to the other side of the bridge. That's before you bring up the fact that the vehicles feel like they are made of paper. What happened to my power fantasy of rolling up in a tank and killing everything. Also the open world didn’t feel well suited for vehicles, I barely used Halo’s iconic warthog because of this. I felt constricted to meandering paths and if you decided to go off road it resulted in you spending more time flipping your warthog than driving it.
I felt like several new weapons in the sandbox are more gimmicky than useful and it’s a shame that because of that we missed out on classics like the carbine, beam rifle, and fuel rod cannon. The combat encounter designs were also fairly lackluster. It felt like most of the environments were made and then just randomly filled up with enemies resulting in few unique or exciting fights. Unlike Cairo Station in Halo 2 which is filled with unique combat situations that are memorable and make me want to replay that mission. Cairo station has the 2 hangar fights, the drone elevator, 2 space sections and the final room, along with several connecting encounters that would put Infinite to shame.
So those are my thoughts on Halo Infinite. If you don’t play it you really aren’t missing much, but there is still some fun to be had there. I think the next Halo game could be great but they need to either get rid of the open world or fully commit to it and make some big innovations to give it life. A focus on improving the core halo experience with a solid sandbox and a vehicle power fantasy. Along with a variety of environments, improved combat encounters and interesting set pieces. So thanks for watching and reading my plea to make halo great again.
