As a Swede it’s interesting to know more about my brother people’s history. Your pre-christian religion is very similar to ours, but of course also unique in many ways. I think it’s important that we know more about our heritage and ancient traditions. You just got a new sub, keep doing these videos. They are very informative.

Another excellent video! I thought witches and curses played a prominent role in the early Finnish Armed forces? As a Canadian I was hoping that Finland would bring it’s magic forces into NATO . I feel the organization is lacking in the mystical aspect of warfare.

Right, who knows how many independent groups was in Viking Age Finland. BUT, from the old names of the land and tribes, and the location of hilltop forts, one can deduct something. Suomalaiset tribe and Suomi placenames locate in south-western Finland's coast (suomalaiset translates as Finns). Hämäläiset tribe and Häme placenames cover most of southern-half Finland stretching from the Bay of Bothnia to the Finnish Gulf and western Lake Ladoga shores (translates as Tavastians). Archelogically deducted their Iron Age settlements started from the Kokemäki-river system. Karjalaiset-tribe and archeological Iron Age Karelia located Northern and North-Eastern side of Lake Ladoga and on the Karelian Isthmus (translates as Karelians). Iron Age Karelian tribe is result of Merovingian Age (before Viking Age) Tavastian immigration and local Vepsian tribe fusion. Then there were the saamelaiset/samit, who aren't ethnic Finns, although Sami-language separated from Early Proto-Finnic. They lived in Lapland and its south side in the Iron Age (translates as the Sami). There is a chain of hilltop forts going between the Tavastian and Karelian tribal lands, guarding the rivers that go from interrior Finland into Karelia. In the Crusade Age (following Viking Age in Finland) Karelians were allied with the Novgorodians. While Tavastians were under the protection of the Pope, Novgorod was enemy of the Papal state. Raids and war expeditions were frequent from Tavastia to Karelia and the other way around.

>Right, who knows how many independent groups was in Viking Age Finland This is a very good point to bring up. I think we often forget that the unified Finnish cultural identity we have today simply did not exist back then. So when people ask about Finns in the X age, we have to remember that this country was not culturally homogenous back then. For example, whenever I've seen someone ask about the connections between Norse and Finnish culture and mythology, the first response is always to ask what they mean by "Finnish", because that's going to have a big impact on the answer lol.
@dajanaca

@Aurinkohirvi Please check more about Saamelaiset, they haven't always lived only in north Finland. For example Saimaa is very likely sami-originated name, so like Nuuksio.

The part about roof ventilation made me wonder if they had a particular method/material for producing fires with especially clean smoke.

Hmm, good question! I only know that they used to be outside for the biggest heating fire, poorly expressed but I mean "pre-heating" it. Still, we know that the smoky conditions brought a lot of eye problems (and others too, I'm sure, but remember reading about eyes).

When i saw your wooden palisade drawing i started wondering... did they built those with logs upwards or sideways?
@Anttimation
Good question and I mean to do a video about the hillforts some time. The consensus is that they had a rock base without mortar and then wooden battlements. If I remember correctly, both vertical and horizontal could have been done. I don't know if they've found any traces or marks to indicate how the wooden construction would have been - long rotten away obviously. Horizontal structures are more commonly illustrated.

Ihan 5kauttaviis, tilattu'd.
