It seems to me that the "Dark Ren" is actually struggling for its existence At first it tries to convince Ren that getting rid of it is risky, and that "Good Ren" needs him.Then it tries to undermine and bully "Good Ren" then it tries to intimidate him, and then, that last "I am YOU RENnnn" has a note of desperation in it. To me THAT is as profound as what the "Good Ren" has to say, and it's why "We're a coin with Two different sides" is SO important

The most heartbreaking part of this song for me is how Ren starts so confident in the conversation but slowly got broken down by his inner dialogue. The responses become increasingly more hurt by the comments made. It makes it all the more spectacular when he beats the voice into back into the void at the end.
@Rob-bt3ev
Жыл бұрын
Hi Jordan - Really great comment. I have watched Hi Ren a number of times now and I had exactly the same thoughts … but then at some point it struck me that there is also a third voice. At first I think we see Ren battling back and forth between himself and the negative/disruptive part of his subconscious, and this voice has been overpowering the other voice of Hope. Just like the pendulum analogy though, Hope starts to be heard, quietly at first, but then gathering strength and defiance, rising up as the pendulum swings into the light. That’s my interpretation now anyway.
@jordanuecker7744
Жыл бұрын
@@Rob-bt3ev I very much agree. When he has his moment of “possession” the song reminds us of the bigger task at hand. My interpretation is he’s referring to the inner struggle that lives within all of us. And the two voices at the end were (as Ren states) known as many names. Good and evil, right and wrong, god vs Lucifer. This song is very profound and I think it’s going to affect a lot of people. If the couple reactions I’ve watched I’ve been surprised that this song is reaching such a broad range. I’ve seen reactions and comments from people in their 60s that have been responding within pure awe of the concept. Everyone sees it differently from what I’ve seen. Some respond saying it’s depression, some the devil, some their anxiety. My mans has expertly captured the human perspective in a 9 minute video. And people see it

I don't think he beat the malevolent voice back into the void at all. If his monologue shows anything it's that there is no "winning" against that side of us because it's eternal, it's always there, just as hope is eternal and always there. So, as he puts it so brilliantly, we need to relax, soften, and learn to dance with it.

I was born in Finland some 63 years ago (august) and I got very hooked up to Rens performance as I immediately resonated with it to some of Finlands signature traits, like our very deep connection to melancholy and introvert personality. I have lived through all stages of melancholy in my lifetime which can push anyone over to the dark side of life (suicides by some very close friends). My recently 'discovered' ME/CFS diagnosis is like rubbing salt in the wounds but, has also given me an explanation of why things are as they are... so for me it actually is a blessing of sorts. I have never ever thought that a perfoming act like Rens could involuntarely get me into tears every time I listened to it (surely more than 100 times by now). Some people out there claim that he is a reincarnation of a bard, that bad imho woul be none other than Shakespeare. Do as Ren... learn to relax and dance with your illness it helps.

Here is some information on Ren's story, in case you didn't already know. I gathered it from old newspaper interviews, articles, and Ren's livestreams and posts where he discussed his condition. Ren Eryn Gill is a British musician/independent artist; born in Wales on March 29, 1990, he grew up in Brighton. Ren pursued a career in music from an early age. In 2009, while studying music performance at Bath Spa University, he began to experience health issues and was struggling to attend his lectures. In 2010, he was signed by Sony Records and was working on an album when his health deteriorated to the point where he was unable to continue and subsequently dropped by Sony. Ren's illness often kept him in bed for up to 23 hours daily. Ren was initially misdiagnosed with depression, bipolar disorder, and chronic fatigue syndrome, which led him to experience psychosis. It would take seven years before a doctor in Belgium finally correctly diagnosed Ren with autoimmunity, Lyme disease, and resulting damage to the brain, organs, joints, and PTSD. Ren eventually underwent stem cell therapy in the United States, which improved his health, but it has not been a cure. Ren is currently in Canada for more treatments, including surgeries, and will have to be there for at least six months (Summer of 2023). Ren’s Canadian doctor discovered that Ren also developed a condition called Mast Cell Activation Disorder, which has affected the myelin sheath in his brain, his thyroid, adrenals, as well as his bones/joints. Ren stated: "It's a lot to wrap my head around having to be away from friends, family, and a successful career, and almost feels like a total juxtaposition to the fact that my music is blowing up right now and spreading to all corners of the world, but that's life, we take the good with the bad." Ren’s recent wisdom tooth removal went well, but he is currently battling an infection following cavitation surgery, and he is not feeling well. Let's keep supporting Ren as he undergoes his treatments. Check out and subscribe to his channel, listen to some of his earlier work, like and comment on his performances, and let's lift Ren's spirits. If you are a believer, pray for him. Ren is an artist with something to say to this generation, and his work is needed in these troubling times. Here is the link to Ren’s GoFundMe page to raise money for his current treatment. www.gofundme.com/f/ren-get-better-from-lyme-disease-and-autoimmunity

I am looking forward to your reaction, as all of them are very enjoyable. “Hi Ren" is the song that put Ren on everyone's radar since December; it went viral and has garnered more than 6 million views since its debut, but he has been creating great music for more than ten years. Ren’s music videos are generally recorded live, often in a single take, although not necessarily the first take, and from various camera angles. His release, "Sick Boi," is almost another chapter to "Hi Ren." Many of Ren’s songs resonate with people because he addresses struggles that many others face every day. Ren plays multiple instruments (acoustic, electric, and bass guitar, piano, drums), has impressive vocals, is an excellent storyteller, and is quite the philosopher and poet. He is considered by many a modern bard; he calls his music “bardcore.” Ren’s earliest recordings on KZitem are from his time in a band called “Trick The Fox,” consisting of Ren and his buddies Charlie and Tommy. Unfortunately, the band performed only briefly due to Ren’s onset of health issues. They are very talented. A fun clip to watch is “The Mash Up.” Ren’s trilogy "The Tale of Jenny/Screech/Violet" has been likened to a Shakespearean tragedy and is a prime example of his genius; it is a master’s class in storytelling and also showcases his guitar skills. The three acts are haunting, and the conclusion will catch you off guard. The trilogy needs to be watched in the order given, as this is the flow of the storyline and is best watched as a whole rather than piecemeal. Ren’s collaborations with Chinchilla (“Chalk Outlines,” “How to Be Me,” “Sexual Healing,” “One Dance/Drunk in Love”) are beautiful and showcase his singing voice. His live music videos are especially impressive. Ren's personal reflections are threaded through many of his songs; "Insomnia," "Depression," “Diazepam," “Penitence,” “Dear God,” “Heretic,” “Dominos,” his "Freckled Angels" album, just to name a few, all deserve a listen. His song "Money Game" (Part I & II) is another recommendation, although it is less of a personal song than it is an indictment of greed and the resulting injustices in this world. Ren’s Hip Hop/Rap style songs are all worth checking out if you enjoy this genre; they are pretty amazing. Check out “The Hunger,” “Genesis,” “What You Want,” “Losing it (FISHER rap retake),” “Right here, right now (Fatboy Slim one shot retake),” "Life is Funny," “Love Music (Parts 1, 2, and 3),” “Crucify Your Culture,” “Power,” and his latest release, “Bittersweet symphony (The Verve retake).” As I recently discovered, Ren also recorded a cover of “Can't Help Falling In Love (Elvis Cover),” that is simply beautiful. Then there are his performances with Sam Tompkins (“Blind Eyed,” “Earned it /Mans World / Falling,” “Walking on the moon/No Diggity”), Eden Nash (“Humble,” “Ocean”), Bibi (“Crutch,” “Ahiahiaoha”), Molly McKinna (“Penitence”), his former bandmate, Romain Axisa (“French Song”), which are all great. "The Big Push" busking sessions, concerts, and live recordings all are awesome and well worth checking out. Their covers of "I Shot the Sheriff/Road to Zion/Hip Hop," "Wade in the Water/Nina Simone/Trouble so Hard," "An Englishman in New York," “Bongo Bong,” “War Pigs,” the songs "Oh My Woman," “Swan Song,” “Sweet Little Lady," "It's Alright," "Watch Out," “Dignity,” and so many others are equally impressive. In anticipation of his stay in Canada for more treatments, Ren prepared some music ahead of time to be released over the next six months that he expects to be gone. He released “Sick Boi” and “Bittersweet Symphony (The Verve retake),” which is another masterful work.

I just want to comment on the term "bardcore" that often gets used in connection with this song. Bardcore has been a thing on youtube for years and it is used as a genre description for when modern music is played with medieval arrangements and instruments. Sometimes the lyrics are re-written in older forms of English. For a prime example of this, look up Hildegard von Blingin'. Take any song you find, you can't get a bad one.

Thank you Anna for your very good reaction! Somehow i have to here this song every day with other reactions. Ren is a brilliant artist. I believe he is putting the inner fight of every human being in one song. In 1988 i became a christian and from that moment one i see or feel everything different. We all know that inner struggle within us. The thoughts/voices that are destructive or e.g. thoughts/voices of hope. Artist Ren shows this inner struggle in a very clever way. But as the song progresses he talks about a spiritual battle. If we look at this song in a "worldly" way, the diagnosis will be different than if we look at the Bible. I am strongly reminded of the passage where Jesus said, "Get behind me, Satan to Peter." This happened after Jesus had said He must suffer, and it had been Peter who said that would not happen. This was the same Peter who just before had declared that Jesus was the Messiah. Jesus showed that it was unfortunately possible that you could be God's mouthpiece one minute and Satan's mouthpiece the next. But this inner/spiritual battle also reminds me of Paul's words. Romans 7:19-25 NLT Although I want the good, I do not. Instead, I'm doing the bad thing and I don't want that right now. If I do what I don't want, it's not really me doing it myself, but the sin in me. This is how I experience again and again: if I want to do good, I cannot resist doing bad. In my innermost being I very much want to do what God's law asks of me. But I see that my actions are completely contrary to that. What my mind wants and what my body does are always in conflict with each other. Sin lives in my body. How miserable I am! Who will deliver me from this terrible power of death? I thank God there is a way out through Jesus Christ our Lord! In short, I stand behind the law of God in my mind, but I am subject to the law of sin in my daily life. Again, the world will diagnose differently. The world that Jesus says is under the power of Satan. So Satan also has a certain power over what we think we know about psychology. Jesus called himself the way, the truth and the life. He called his opponent, among other things, the father of lies, as Ren also sang in his song. Both truth and falsehood are intertwined through everything we deal with. Even as a child we are influenced by one or the other without being aware of it. Jesus also said that the truth can set us free, so also from that inner struggle. But then the correct diagnosis must be made.

I love listening to your native language (no idea what it is yet! Gotta google that). Your English is wonderful and I love the accent. GREAT reaction. I like the way you went back to discuss different sections. You're FINNISH! I have not heard anyone speak that language. So fun. I will enjoy listening to your channel and music!

This reaction video is remarkable in many ways, but one thing in particular stands out - the initial reaction. Whereby 90% of reactors to this video laugh and smile from the start way up to the 3 minute mark (and I have watched a TON of "Hi Ren" videos), Anna does not. She understood immediately the dark content within the initially light facade. I did, too, which is why it has always irritated me to see chuckles and mirth for what - to me, anyway - was a performance that was so obviously (or not so obviously, to some) going to be something deadly serious. Nice job, Anna! p.s. This was the 4th take - recorded live, of course - of "Hi, Ren", so, with reference to the mention of a bit of strain in the vocals, I guess he can be excused a little.

I have watched this video countless amount of times. I love to watch Reactions to this young man. The song really strikes a chord with me, as it does many others most likely. Watching the video you would never really understand how its a 9 min video. It feels like a 2 min. The camera work, the singing, the dialogue is mesmerising. Truly gifted and talented. Thank you for your reaction.

What can I say? Seen a few hundred reactions to this tune. Yours is the first I've watched half done in Finnish, and also one of the most beautifully insightful. Good work lass xx I'm subscribed to you now, can't wait to discover what else you have to say on things. And to follow the sublime cadence of your mother tongue 😛

Great reaction as always - thank you! And I wholeheartedly agree with your observation at the end that not every piece of art should be broken down and analyzed in detail - "Hi Ren" (in my humble opinion) is a cohesive, beautiful piece of art which is raw and emotional and that makes sense only as a whole. Thank you again for the video and if you want to react to something more classically "musical" by Ren, I would love to see your take on "The tale of Jenny and Screech (Full)". It's even longer than "Hi Ren" but I can guarantee you won't find it tedious or dull - everyone I know was captivated by it to the point of forgetting about the duration. Hyvää iltaa!!

I absolutely LOVE this video... I really enjoy watching other people's reactions to watching it for the first time too.... For me, it transcends what we typically think of as a song.... Whatever it is, it's powerful, and it still affects me every time I hear it even though I've listened to it dozens of times by now. I had never seen your channel before, but as someone who is half Finnish, I couldn't resist checking out your video. I've also subscribed, and I look forward to going through more of your videos too....

We have the potential for the divine and for sin within us freewill gives us the power to choose. The Devil is "The Accuser" not just before God, for as long as you have consciousness, day & night it accuses your light.

Thank you Anna for giving Ren's masterpiece the respect it deserves, as well as for your clear, precise and accurate observations, especially in that beautiful language of yours! (Thanks for the subtitles, much appreciated). Ren is 'unpredictable' because he is original in this sense: He combines English-British theatre, prose and poetry with operatic and cinematic flashes, never mind his astonishing musicianship and vocal talent. That's a hard combination to achieve and deliver, especially at such an extraordinary level of excellence

This is one of the best reaction videos of this song I’ve seen. Well done! You did a phenomenal job of analyzing the song yet still allowing yourself to enjoy it in the moment. Ren’s songwriting, the intricacies of his guitar playing and vocals, and his physical performance were all astonishingly fresh and brilliant, and you highlighted it without being overly deconstructionist about it. Many thanks!

Love your reaction its unique, especially the musicology, Ren is close to genius. The text is Shakespearean in its scope and the music is kind of a modern day English troubadour, there is little discernible melodic and rhythmic influence from the American Jazz and Rock tradition. There is a technical influence from Bach and classical guitar -high praise indeed on both lyrics and music. I am still astonished!

Ms. I hope it's not weird for me to say you're an exceptional beauty. I sincerely appreciate your use of English and Finnish, it's been so interesting to hear as I haven't had much exposure to Finnish before, and I really enjoy it. I hope you're doing well personally, as you seem to be quite affected by these emotional songs of the few I've watched so far. This performance was incredible, a truly artistic, heartfelt expression. Best wishes, from Australia.

I first came across Ren busking on the streets of Brighton and have followed him since. Have watched loads of people reacting to Hi Ren mostly just to see their faces when hit with something totally out of the left field. You, Elizabeth of The Charismatic voice and Chris Liege are far and away above all the other reactions because of your technical insight combined with an emotional reaction. This is the first time I have come across your channel, liked and subscribed, good job.
