Fintan Sheerin of Trinity College Dublin, interviewed at a BILD PBS Conference. talks about the need to identify and address any oppressive issues prior to and during any Positive Behaviour Approaches. Dr Sheerin highlights that maintaining people with intellectual disabilities in dependent situations is, even if unwittingly done, an oppressive role.
The idea of knowing is important, we see situations where knowing is not present, where staff don't really know the the people they are there to support. To engage with people we need to shift the power balance, to meet the person in a human to human situation - we can't provide real person centred support if we haven't engaged at that level. The fundamental problem, says Dr Sheerin, is lack of knowledge.
