I'm surprised so many people were allowed to mill around watching and filming the fire. A car workshop would contain gas bottles, which could have exploded. The police should have moved everyone well away thus allowing the firefighters to get on and fight the fire without having people getting in the way.

why are they squirting hoses high into the air and missing the fire? We were taught to aim at the base of the flames.

I doubt that their was anything in the fire building worth saving. The flames coming through the roof were a serious threat to the adjacent building and this is what the exterior crews were concentrating on. Unlike in the US, interior and exterior crews are trained to work together. Dropping large quantities of water on a building where crews are working inside is the most important thing to avoid.

Fire travels along the underside of a roof and breaks through at the tip of the flames where they are hottest. Dumping thousands of gallons of water through the hole completely misses the seat of the fire and most of it runs below the fire and out of the door.

There was an aerial on the other side of the building, though you can't see them LFB deployed 10 pumps 1 aerial and a command truck to the seen, given everyone was out and there were gas cylinders in there a defensive posture for the main fire was used with an internal offense in the ne t door building

Shifts change and crews arrive to relieve them at the end of their shift. Also, working too long on a serious fire is exhausting and dangerous. Therefore a relief crew will be sent in after a few hours.

all that water and their not doing anything because you need to aim at the base of the fire not the top of it

I believe that crews on the other side were concentrating on the fire building. What we saw on the video was simply protecting the wall of adjacent building.

Tim you don't have to aim at the base of the flame. Like Tom Jolly said gas cooling above. All the heat and flammable gases are above.

@trebor jones I'm guessing you mean aerial appliance? In the UK High Rise refers to a building... But to answer your question, although you could argue there are benefits to using one.. access, appliance sighting, the risk of cylinders being involved and most importantly available water pressure (look how poor it is at 6:49) were probably the deciding factors as to why one wasn't requested.

@Robin Blitz. London Fire Brigade have a latest incident feed, below is a copy and pasted entry for this fire........... Over 72 firefighters and officers tackled a fire at a garage workshop on Lamb Lane in Hackney this afternoon. The car workshop plus five cars were completely damaged by the fire. Around half of an adjacent three floor building which is a converted office block was also damaged by the fire. Firefighters cooled a propane cylinder and worked hard to prevent the fire spreading further. 10 fire engines and an aerial ladder platform were at the scene from stations including Bethnal Green, Shoreditch, Shadwell, Stoke Newington and Whitechapel fire stations. The Brigade was called at 1315 and the fire was under control at 1535 but crews are expected to be at the scene damping down for some time.

Same question as Robin Blitz. I was trying to work out what it was that was on fire. Great piece of filming. Rare to get such good, close up videos of fires in this country. I blame the health and safety knobs that seem to think that you're in mortal danger if you are close enough to see what is happening , i.e. the copper that turned up and started trying to get everyone back!

I have now watched a few videos from London. It is hard to see in a video clip and hard to see from a distance. Do firefighters in England do much interior firefighting? It looks like there might be extension into the larger building. Would they make an interior attack to stop that extension? I am respectfully asking I am just curious. Thank you and be safe!

TACRfan in the states we can be too reckless for no reason. your fire service seems very intelligent. I don't bash anyone. there is no enforced standard in the U.S. every city does their own thing their own way some are excellent some are crazy and some are just plain dumb. be safe over there its a pleasure talking to you

It was a car mechanic garage alight... The owner confirmed a cylinder was inside and that all people in the garage were accounted for. Crews were in the adjoining multi-purpose office block searching and looking for fire spread. UK crews will quite often mount and internal attack if there are no people involved but will be willing to take less risk than elsewhere dependent on what benefit can be had.

another asshole who thinks he knows it all from his armchair and obviously knows nothing about fire fighting techniques and for your info it wasn't just in the air it was aimed up so the jet would reach over the wall and down into the centre of the building to hit the flames there so like philippa Neville said if your so good and think you know it all then stop sitting in your armchair hiding behind your wifes apron and join the brigade or aint you man enough

Most of the water going on that fire is turning to steam, they need to be up higher than the fire to get the water onto the fire before it grows, i notice alot of fireman fighting fires this way when 80percent of the water is wasted and they know this, so why the fuck dont they change the way they fight fire because the speed of a fire can be slowed right down by fighting the fire from the right point. just saying.
