A notable thing about the Fire Emblem Awakening soundtrack is that there will often be two versions of the song, one just regular and one with (Ablaze) added on. The regular version of the song (usually a more chill version of the song) will play while on the battle map, and then the Ablaze version (which is a more intense, dramatic version of the song) will play when you engage in combat
@tusken9669

Some other games in the series use map themes for your turn and for the enemies turn, then switch to entirely different battle themes, but Awakening (for instance) seamlessly switches in and out of the map themes and their combat versions. The enemy turn battle version uses "(Galvanized)" as a title add-on.

Would it surprise you to hear that "Don't speak her name" despite being such a major theme actually plays less than halfway through the game? Even more surprising is that it plays during the entire gameplay section of the chapter it plays on. The enemy troops are moved by a major sacrifice but are under threat of death by their mad king. The general of this force speaks throughout the chapter telling his men to throw down their arms, that he will take the blame for them. It wouldn't be a strategy war map if they all threw down their arms, and they ultimately choose to fight with their general. But in a game with generic identical looking soldiers, they made these soldiers share in the emotion of the chapter. It's brilliant honestly. Music can really bring so much beauty to an experience
@rhymeswithmoose228
Жыл бұрын
One tiny thing during that chapter is that the soldier who primarily speaks to the general is the most generic portrait, so generic its shared across all factions (just recolored to show enemies and allies). Like, I doubt its intentional, but it really drives home the idea that there is ultimately no real difference between these people other than those above them.
@KingWoop72
8 ай бұрын
Not to mention that, unlike most Awakening chapters, its a "Defeat the Boss" objective. You can, and are by the tone of the scene encouraged, to just rush through the chapter and escape, only fighting the necessary battle, and sparing those who are still questioning if they *should* fight anymore, even if they decided to stand with their general. The boss, Mustafa, even doesnt want to fight, and is more or less sacrificing himself so his troops dont suffer for desertion.

If you want to know about the story behind the song (Dont speak her name) here is the gist. Spoilers: Basically, A loved character sacrifices herself in the hopes of a stop to the war between two neighboring kingdoms. Her sacrifice speaks to all people except for the mad king of the invading kingdom. Good guys are escaping, and a high rank general stays and fights, even though he believes in the sacrifice that was just made. He tells one of the main characters this, and the main character in turn responds with the title of the song.

I never noticed that in Don't Speak her Name it feels like the Piano is leading and calling and the rest of the instruments join in, respond and expand. Which is fitting, the character this theme is about gives a speech and sacrifices themselves. About your guess that the theme 'you have power...like mine' alludes to something fairy-like, I'd say it could probably be called fey-adjacent. It's the theme that plays when you meet a character referred to by those who only know _of_ her as the 'voice' of Naga, who is the goddess worshipped by those who fight on the side of 'good' in the Fire Emblem series. So the character is seen as an apostle, but what the people see as her 'hearing the voice of the goddess' in that really religious way they would, is actually just Naga talking to her...great-granddaughter, I think? If that? They're dragons, they live basically forever, yada, yada.

To expand on the differentiation between the regular tracks and the Ablaze variants-- (Alert! Infodump incoming!) Fire Emblem is defined as a "Turn-Based Tactical Strategy" game, which essentially means that it plays like an overcomplicated version of chess mixed with a standard RPG, except you get to move every unit on the field one at a time instead of just one whenever it's your turn. The majority of the gameplay has you taking on a bird's-eye view over the battlefield, moving your units and checking enemy units' strength and movement ranges and determining which of your units will take on which enemies. The regular tracks play while you're in this 'tactician's view.' Once you order a unit to engage an enemy unit, or an enemy engages one of your units, the camera zooms in and you get to watch the round of combat play out, which is when the Ablaze variant kicks in. Once the round is over, the camera zooms back out, and the track switches back to the regular version. It's worth noting that Awakening was actually the first game in the series to employ this dynamic switching between calm and battle variants for level (or 'map') themes. Every FE game prior had dedicated battle themes that were entirely distinct from the map themes--and for a large majority of those games, you only had a single battle theme for anyone who wasn't a boss. Or, well, technically two: one for combat occurring on the player's turn, and one for combat during the enemy's turn. The third and ninth games - Mystery of the Emblem and Path of Radiance respectively - were the only games who broke this trend, and even then it was only by technicality as they only had four; two for the first half of the game, and the other two for the second half. And then came Path of Radiance's sequel, Radiant Dawn, which finally broke the mold and featured multiple unique player-phase and enemy-phase battle themes unique to each in-game faction. After Awakening, though, the series essentially switched completely to this new dynamic map music style. In fact, the only game that didn't do so was a remake of an older game. And now, some trivia: "Conquest" is actually a remix of the main Fire Emblem theme, of which some variant has been the title screen theme for every game in the series except for FE2, FE9, FE14, FE15, and FE17. And even if it's not the title screen theme, you'll be able to hear it at least somewhere in every game. "You have power... like mine." is a modern version of the theme "Legend of the Divine Dragon" which originally appeared in FE3. It's also popped up in FE7 as "Legend of the Dragon God," and in FE11 as "The Little Divine Dragon." It's typically associated with the character Tiki, who appeared as a child in FE1 and FE3 and their remakes FE11 and FE12, and then returned in Awakening as an adult, having spent a thousand years alternating between sleeping and trying not to think about the fact that she's outlived all her old friends.

Honestly the themes shown here were a fantastic representation of the game as a whole. Glad to hear your opinion on each of them as well as get a little more insight on each theme. Was a little surprised there weren't as many map/battle themes here though. I can't say even one of them was underwhelming. If you get a chance, listen to both the normal and ablaze themes one after another. Many of them are what you expect from a standard and then more intense version of the song, Prelude being a great example. But i can't even choose which of the two Conquest themes is my favorite because they're both so beautiful, even if the main theme of the series does annoy me here. These themes are made to change fluidly from one to the other as you enter and exit combat and it amazes me how different some can be. The instrumentation can take some wild turns too, and honestly Chaos is my favorite example of this. Sound warning for a first time listener though, Chaos (Ablaze) is a very abruptly loud theme.

I really love Id (Purpose), an amazing theme for the end of the game but something especially cool about it is that it uses the main melody of the game heard all throughout the various Id tracks in the game, like Beginning, Serenity, and Sorrow. So you spend the entire game hearing this melody to then hearing this marvelous use of it at the end it's so good. In psychology the Id is the primitive, basic, and fully unconscious part of personality. This melody is the theme of the main character, who they are at their very core. And you get to hear it change and evolve into what is Id (Purpose) aaah it's just so good they did such great work on this soundtrack down to even the names of the songs themselves

Fire emblem is a tactical RPG, that's somewhat like chess, each character has both a weapon type they can use, which usually are swords, Lance's, axes, bows, magic tomes, and magic staffs, though it varies from each game, and movement, so for example armoured units have better defenses but move less, fliers like Pegasus knights can ignore the terrain and go to places where there is no floor, cavaliers can move faster but usually have difficulties moving through terrains like sand or forests, etc It's very easy to play even for new players, in fact awakening was made to be the last game, as previous entries didn't earn Nintendo as much as desired, but it was done so well, it ended up reviving the franchise It was in fact my first fire emblem, and from there I went on to play other entries (like shadow dragon for the Nintendo ds, or radiant dawn for the Wii). Also funny thing, awakening had difficulty with graphics so characters fought on the screen without feet, there are so many memes about feet and fire emblem😅

With Fire Emblem being a tactical RPG, each "map theme" has two variants: a base version that plays while you're choosing your actions, looking at unit stats, etc.; and a more intense variant (subtitled "Ablaze" or something similar) for when you've made your move and watching your units attack. "Prelude" was an example of a map theme, and "Conquest" was an example of an attack variant! The two versions of each theme cross-fade seamlessly, making the individual battles have so much more impact! (Id ~ Purpose, being the finale theme, plays throughout the map with no variation.) The songs with quotes for titles are all cutscene tracks. "Don't speak her name!" also has the privilege of carrying from its cutscene straight into the next map, overriding the usual "map/battle" variants. ...Come to think of it, since you heard Sonic 06, my random-commenter's-suggestion from way back is fulfilled, huh? Hey, if you liked Undertale, you should listen to Touhou sometime...

YES, FIRE EMBLEM FOR THE WIN. Also, each fire emblem game has different music directions so awakening music is different from Fates music or Three houses Fire emblem is one of my favourite videogame series, second only to Pokemon of course 🤣

"Don't speak her name!" is one of the best songs in the series I'm sure. It's such a strong theme during one of the peaks of emotion in the game

Yessss I'm excited for this!! If you wanna look into Fire Emblem some more, Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia is definitely up there OST wise in my opinion. Twilight of the Gods is a MUST, especially if you enjoy vocals. I would also recommend Heritors of Arcadia, Truth, Song of Bygone Days, The Mad God's Blessing... the list goes on.

I don't know if you ever have, and if you have that's awesome, but what about the Pokemon arrangements for the Super Smash Bros series? That'd be a worth a video or two, I'd say!

Whenever you next do Fire Emblem, it’s GOT to be Engage. Some of the best battle themes in the franchise if you ask me.

I haven’t even played the game. I did know Id (Purpose). I did not expect to just break down crying the moment it started. … so, Shadows of Valencia next?

You should listen to either the new Bombrush Cyberpunk OST or one of the Jet Set Radio OST:s (Or all of them, that works too).

If there would be another Fire Emblem video one day, I think it would be best to just take some ost from a few games instead of focusing on one game at the time. Because there would be quite a lot to listen to otherwise, even if there would be videos for maybe Shadows of Valentia, Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn, Fates, 3 Houses and Engage. I'm saying that because I can't help but imagine that doing one game per video would make it feel long and/or boring, even with other games between each one. I know that is assuming right there, but I wanted to propose an alternative just in case. Though I did mean it when I said it would feel long, knowing how long it took me to go through let's plays of each game aside from the 4th and 5th ones and 3 Houses and Engage.

Oh, man. MAN. The way you immediately interpreted Don't Speak Her Name's context not entirely correctly, but incorrectly in a way that the game intentionally creates...
