I feel like another strength the game has is its worldbuilding and lore, though I think you need some info from FE12 to complete your picture of Archanea's lore. Anyway, I love having multiple enemy nations to fight, each with their own unique history, military composition, motives, politics, and characters. My experience with the story was enhanced further when I knew about FE12 lore in my second playthrough (origin of Gharnef and Medeus, the five orbs, Gotoh the founder of magic, etc.). The story is not the most unique or innovative, but it definitely feels like a medieval classic to me, and I love the classics. It's a simple story of good vs. evil and I like it that way. It's better than stories that try to be unique but end up becoming too complicated for the writers to handle properly (biggest offender of this is the route system in Fates and Three Houses). Sometimes it's fun to go back to the classic medieval tropes (dark dragon, old sage, chivalrous knight, princess of fate, etc.) and just write a simple, compelling tale with them.
@r.s.7929

I do like complicated FE plots too when they're done right though, such as Radiant Dawn and Genealogy of the Holy War. It's just that I've grown tired of super complex stories lately because I've been following different complicated plotlines with good buildup, only to be disappointed when the writers just screw it up (I think it's really Attack on Titan's trash ending that made me burn out). It's more likely for writers to mess up with these kinds of stories, so sometimes I feel like a simpler plot is better, more functional, and easier for people to enjoy.

Shadow Dragon nails medieval classic, and the way the characters talk feels so fitting to the setting. At times it feels almost poetic or legendary, or at the very least just has a lot of weight to what may be otherwise simple conversations. Really elevates the experience considering how short the script is otherwise.

Its like a plain regular iced coffee. Yeah there's drinks that are all fancied up and maybe taste better, but sometimes you just want a simple story and some great gameplay with no complicated bells and whistles. Conquest has my favorite "modern" FE game design and has more bells and whistles with pair-ups, tonics, and S-Supports, but if I want simple fire emblem, then this game is the way to go. Also it has such an underrated soundtrack, and the story moments it did have honestly hit. Like Minerva and Michalis' battle conversation is amazing and maybe unpopular opinion but Nyna is great too. Don't diss the game that built the foundation for fire emblem.

YESSS man. Shadow Dragon's soundtrack is one of my favorites in the entire franchise, maybe my actual favorite in fact, though modern FE games tend to have an advantage because of better soundboard technology. Still, SD's soundtrack feels soooo classic, such as A Hero's Destiny, Reclamation, Preparations, Bellowing Darkness, Blade of Treachery, Medeus' theme, etc. You could easily just modernize Shadow Dragon's soundtracks by just changing the timbre using modernized soundboards, and it'd easily compete with soundtracks from three houses for example.

I personally have one thing to defend on the battle animations. I know they look bad, with everyone decked in blue and the only real difference being different coloured turbans (I mean hair). But one thing I always liked was the flow. Some characters who hit two times in a row would follow up instantly, like myrmidons, instead of returning to their original spot like most older FE games. Now I know that Three Houses does this so long as there is no counterattack, but I have an issue here and its when they land a crit. If a character lands a crit in Three Houses during a double attack, then they jump backwards, do their critical quote, and then proceed with the animation, and it just feels clunky. In Shadow Dragon, back to the myrmidon as reference, if they land a crit during the double hit, then instead of going back, they just instantly perform the crit animation, and then go back. It flows so smoothly to me instead of the constant jumping back and forth. It most likely this battle system that also helps with the speed of the game like he said.

Came here to say this. People rag on how ugly it is compared to GBA, but I love how well it flows and how the sprites (models?) have that clean mix of 2D and 3D that lets you see the motion of their attacks. Plus some of the crits do still look pretty cool

I love it. Marth is pretty badass in this game too. Goes from sheer hatred to his enemies to witty banter with nyna before charging the wooden calvary. We see several different points to Marth we don't see in other games where he's portrayed as just the sweet humble prince. It is a great first game for a series and honestly still worth replaying now and then Mathis is still useless tho. Lol

Shadow Dragon is my favorite game, and I could write pages on why that's the case but I wanted to shout out the comment about its speed. It's a game that doesn't waste your time and, like you said, is just incredibly fun to pick up and not have lots of down time waiting around with. In a way, the absurd amount of warp uses helps with that, because while I love playing those late game Macedon chapters, if I ever feel like skipping them I can just do it easy, rather than getting to chapter 20 in CQ and putting the game down for a month before convincing myself to get through it.

By the way, I recently played Hard 5 aiming for all gaiden chapters. You're really not missing much, they don't even acknowledge the "death" requirement in their stories, which was super disappointing. They're just the same plain chapters that might as well have been in FE1. The characters they give you in these aren't terrible, but on average they're just kinda there. The only really interesting chapter is the one you get if Tiki dies and you don't get the Falchion since it adds fuel to lore conspiracies

I feel like with Shadow Dragon, The cast is so massive you can make a brand new story every single time you played. I'm on my third run and I'm using Hero Caesar because for once I didn't want to use Ogma, and other minor stuff like getting units killed and not resetting [You will be missed Darros and Julian and the other ten dudes I accidently killed] And it feels like a brand new experience/game in a way. Also you made me want to use Tomas for once in my life, I always thought his design was cool at the very least, I just never used archers unless it was Klein/Igrene/Takumi/Innes/any archer from SOV.

I have a soft spot for Shadow Dragon because of how Marth is written in it, I also like how it playfully throws shade at FE1 and how it used Marth as a blank slate to tell it's story. One scene I can remember is when a character tried to explain to Marth how his country works and he basically hits them with a "Hey I know how my country works what kinda Prince do you take me for" I also like his dialogue with characters that Caeda has recruited. I dunno I would rank Shadow Dragon an A tier it has flaws but none of them are REALLY that egregious
@JacobNintendoNerd99
2 жыл бұрын
The blank slate issue was in FE3 too and there it pretty much turned Marth into an idiot. FE12 continued the trajectory of Marth becoming a more competent and realized character and solved this issue by turning Kris into the stupid idiot who i.e. doesn't know who Anri is. I think that line you reference is actually specifically throwing shade at a moment in Book 2 where Marth literally asks Jagen who Anri is and what he did, despite Malladus covering some of it in Book 1 already

@@MitoRequiem FE12 really just doesn't get a lot of recognition despite doing the bulk of the work on making Marth who he is. No problem with the reminder, FE3 has a lot of moments; I still think it's clever how they offload Marth's dumb moments where he's clearly just being a player perspective proxy onto Kris, who literally is just a player proxy and makes more sense. A lot of times, they even make the infodumps optional and skippable as a result

Probably the only mainline FEs I would rather play Shadow Dragon than are Binding Blade and Birthright/Conquest, but coming back to it a few years ago it did obviously have a niche within the series that none of the other games really fill for me. I actually went the opposite way of you; with basically no concrete characterization for any of the units, I leaned in and treated them as disposably as that implies. It ends up shaking out that, between that and the gigantic maps you're shlepping around, it evoked the feeling of being a commander in a warfront in a way that the rest of the series doesn't really do for me. As alluded at the top, that feeling isn't ~that~ valuable to me, but it's neat and I'm glad a game in the series has it.

The thing I like the most in shadow dragon is how fast you can jump into a new game. Select new game, your hard difficulty, press start, and tada, you are in the real first map ( and not some horrible boring tutorial map with 2 to 3 characters) ready to play, and skip every story element, battle animation, even the full enemy phase without any remorse. And you can skip full chapters with the warp staff, in particular the gaiden one, which in my opinion are so bad, it's a good thing they are skipped by default. This and everything else you said about the game is why this game is the best to do random challenge run. with the re-classing system in three houses, it seemed to be a good pick for challenge runs. But in that game there is so many random cutscenes, loading screens, introductions and tutorial you have to do to access some monastery functionalities, so many renown menuing to get what you want and the firsts chapters are just a chore. I just gave up and played a bow only + Marth H3 run of shadow dragon. I'm pretty sure I did the full 25 chapters of that game faster than I would have white clouds in 3H.

The reason for why the Gaiden chapters are locked the way they are is that they were meant to be a safety net to struggling players. You can see this in how the enemy quality in the Gaiden maps take a huge dip from the surrounding chapters, while the maps don't have any tricky layouts, so the Gaiden chapters are basically just free EXP with some loot and you get an extra unit that's a lot better than the generic replacements (and in the case of the final Gaiden chapter, the downgraded Falchion + Nagi helps ensures no one will get softlocked against Medeus if they didn't get the Falchion and got Tiki killed).

On a more serious note there are some things I like and dislike about shadow dragon -Playing this game after Radiant Dawn and Path of Radiance raises expectations but shadow dragon decides to go in a completely different direction which is completely fine but returning players are likely to feel disappointed -The map screen is very small compared to other fe games and I often miss information due to that (skill issue) -Playing this game with keyboard and mouse is vastly inferior to how it was meant to be played an adds additional clunk (not it’s fault tho, just a reason I’ll probably never go back to play shadow dragon) -One of the worst offenders of ambush spawns in the series -For how simple the story is it is incredibly hard to follow, Grig is attacking Gruff so Guggu is put on the offensive luckily Marth from Archanea (not the OTHER Archanea) is there to save the day -I really like using the spheres! They’re fun -3 warp staffs 👁👄👁 -BALLISTAS -Our lords and saviors Dolph + Maccelan So overall a game I’m mixed on except that Minerva doesn’t come with a levin sword anymore 0/10

For the story, think about it like WW2, multiple nations fighting each other under two major alliances (allies and axis, remember?). Big bad dragon and his empire politically blackmails and manipulates Grust (the country with Camus and the Sable Order), and Macedon (the country with all the flying dracoknights). Gharnef kills Pontifex Miloah and takes over Khadein (kingdom of mages) and allies with Doluna, Grust, and Macedon. Together, they all crush Archanea. Gharnef convinces Gra (the neighbor nation right next to Marth's home country) to betray Altea and Marth's father is killed. Marth escapes into exile. There is only one nation left that hasn't bowed down, and that is Aurelis. Princess Nyna escaped there and was taken under the protection of Hardin. Years later, Marth rallies an army from an island nation called Talys (Caeda's home) and comes back to rescue Aurelis which is being bombarded by Macedon (Aurelis is basically like Great Britain in WW2, the last allied european nation that didn't yet surrender to the Nazis, and so they got constantly bombed). Marth's army merges with Aurelis and then they basically liberate Archanea and Altea, recruit a bunch of people along the way, then crush Gra, Khadein, Grust, and Macedon. He gets two orbs which he uses to kill Gharnef and take back his holy sword which Gharnef was hoarding after he killed Marth's father. Then Marth goes and kills the dragon with it. The end. It's a simple story because there's not that much dialogue and stuff, but I really like the political conflict and overall dynamic of the war. It made me very excited for each new chapter as the war progressed, unlike three houses where I have to do monastery stuff for HOURS before I can get into the next chapter which just burns me out. I do agree with you though that it was a mistake for the continent's name to be the same as one of the names of the seven kingdoms, which just creates unnecessary confusion.

It was also my first game in the series and I believe the fact that it was so minimalistic in terms of added mechanics, such as rescue or skills, help me get into the series a lot. After all its just you, the enemy and your strategies. If there's only one reason why I don't play this game more is because New Mystery is just this game but better in terms of mechanics, as well as the loss of the online functionality and the shop in it that has unique items (although I think you can get it through other means).

There's 2 types of people in this world 1. People who enjoy FE11 h5 warpless 2. People who dislike FE11 But for real, I really like FE11 but I think my main problem with it is how you can just ignore like half of the game with warp. The rest of the game is just passing around a forged ridersbane. I think if you don't use warp at all it's a really fun experience, but I do consider it a major flaw when the most effective way to play a strategy game is the most braindead (Bopper said the same thing in his tier list, and I agree with his take). Other games can have a lot of content skipped with warp, but it's not nearly as game breaking as in FE11. I appreciate FE11 positivity though, great work!

Shadow Dragon lacks that impactful first impression that most other games give you. In my first playthrough, I want to experience the story, the world and the characters of the game. Especially in the character department, Shadow Dragon really shows its age. If I would only rate the games by my impression of the very first playthrough, Shadow Dragon would be ranked towards the bottom. And I suspect many people who only play the games once or twice see it similarly. The greatest strength Shadow Dragon has is, as noted in the video, the near endless replay value. The game runs really smooth and lets you skip anything you aren't interested. No other Fire Emblem game does this as well as the DS games.

Really? I thought that the prologue of the game was a good enough impression. The game throws you straight into a losing battle where the protagonist's nation falls after being betrayed, his family murdered, the continent falling into chaos, and now the prince has to fight desperately with the few remaining knights he has left by his side in order to escape and hide in exile until the time is right for him to return. Years later, the prince gathers an army and starts a conquest to retake the continent by first getting through some bandits and then coming to rescue Aurelis, the last nation on the continent that's still resisting the Doluna Empire. It's a pretty compelling start if you ask me.

Radiant Dawn also didn't have supports, but at the very least it had base conversations. SD doesn't even to that, which means most characters only dialogue are their death quotes and you have to make up your own stories about them, because that's literally the only thing you can do. Most issues are related to changes made from FE1. I'm all for remake modernizing the original game, but they were not though out at all. Adding weapon triangle to a game that was never designed with it requires a lot of rebalancing, which SD doesn't do, so sword users, including your Lord, are constantly at disadvantage. Most units are pulled 1 to 1 from FE1 in terms of base stats, which leads to stuff like Radd having -1 personal speed, since he was a mercenary in FE1, a class with different bases and removal of weapon level screwing over some units. Growth rates are arbitrary - in FE1, Ogma was a merc with stronger bases, but weaker growths, while Navarre was the other way around. In SD Navarre has equal or worse growths in all areas exept speed, while still having worse bases than Ogma, which makes no sense. Infamous chapter 13 is only so hellish in this game - balistas in FE1 had 2 range instead of 3-10. So it's not just graphics and lack of supports. SD just doesn't "feel" good to play. It has so many poor design decisions that pile up on top of each other, making it hard to get into. There are no skills, growth rates are the lowest since Gaiden, map design is all over the place and most units are generics with names, both in terms of character and power. It is as barebones as it can get - which isn't neccesarily bad, but it's a hard sell to someone who's more accustomed to newer games. I like it for it's fast pace and simplicity and i have a soft spot for it being my first FE game, but it's still one of my least favourite.

I know I was talking abont it on your stream the other day, but I Really enjoyed my first run of FE11. I know I was mostly bitching about some of FE12's weirdness, but part of that was how much I enjoyed fe11. I was on Hard1 my first time. Sometime last year I wanted to get back into FE after years of skill issues & pitfalls getting in the way of me having fun, starting with an FE8 Replay (still my favorite Overall game if I count story & characters, played through it many times), an FE7 replay on Hector Normal (2nd run), A First run of FE6 & 11. Only really took a break from both FE12 & FE4 because I was on Abel's chapter and starting Eldigan's. On top of me burning out. And i'm legit surprised at how much I enjoyed both FE6 & 11 in terms of gameplay. When you're mostly used to FE8 style enemy phasing, having to balance more RNG risks in FE6 and dealing with stronger enemies in both games leads to both feeling like FE Fundamentals checks. Even ambush spawns were mostly fair in both games, as you often had a visual cue for where the reinforcement would spawn, and a general idea of when. I think the main thing is just thst FE11 also had some rather solid maps. Sure. Some of them were gimmicky, like the Wooden Cavalry, but most were pretty thought out in terms of strategy. The main things I'd personally complain about, like Marth being a bad unit, or the abundance of Horse/Armor enemies, were mostly fixed in FE12. But you know how FE12 is, 2 steps forward 1 step back. FE12's kinda like Doom 2. Makes solid improvements over the original game its engine is based on, and has moments of genius, but also just a few maps that make you wonder what "fun" was meant to be had here. Also Marth's a legitimately good character. Even just with Shadow Dragon I liked his growth from fear, to revenge, to resolve. And Mystery definitely added more layers to him, making him a fucking great character. I got the bluepaint about halfway throuth FE11 if i'm honest

Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon has ballistas, infinite range warp staves, wolf and sedgar, the wing spear, forges, named forges, and a theatrically stupid difficulty that requires you to do stupid shit to win. Unquestionably one of the funniest games in the series and always a joy to come back to

I've always really enjoyed this game. Another thing that adds to the simple, fast, and fun experience is that there are zero Fog of War maps in Shadow Dragon. Sadly, I found out a long time ago it's better to just never discuss this game with anyone. For some reason people can get really, really mad when you enjoy something that they dislike. Maybe even more mad than I've seen when I dislike something that they like, in some cases!

It's weird to me how support conversations wedged themselves into full-blown persona elements in modern fire emblem games.. I really don't care about supports, at all.

This, character backstories can be shown through plot related events, optional talk conversations, without requiring player to view supports.

I just finished shadow dragon for the first time a few hours ago. While I’m disappointed at the lack of supports and lackluster visuals for combat, I still thoroughly enjoyed it! I enjoyed warp skipping the final boss(which was the only time I warp skipped because I thought it was funny). It’s nice to see some units I enjoyed in Heroes back when it was released, like Gordin and Abel, in their original games. It’s certainly not my favorite entry in the series, but I certainly enjoyed it a lot, more than 7 for sure, but I didn’t enjoy it as much as 6 or three houses, which are some of my favorite games of all time, so it’s not exactly a low bar

Agreed with pretty much everything in the Video. Shadow Dragon was my start into the series and is still my favorite FE by far. It just has general good core FE gameplay, nothing more, nothing less. I actually learned how to hex edit just so i could hack this game.

Excellent review! To me Shadow Dragon is one of my favorites of the series, just classic gameplay with good chapter maps, any difficulty you want and everything you need on the preparation screen, also it is much harder to avoid attacks so you can't just defeat a group of axe fighters just by leaving your thief in the bushes or other place with terrain bonus unlike in GBA games... But of course it has some flaws like the unbalanced units like wolf/sedgar, the ballistaes, warp staff, and right when you have access to the forge you can make weapons literally stronger than the legendary ones, also it took me years to notice but they (almost) never changed any enemies classes which means you NEVER encounter any warrior, swordmaster, berserker, sage, dark mages except in the arena or nagi's chapter, also for some reason they never mention the support system neither in the game of the booklet in the game's box...

Shadow Dragon and New Mystery are both some of my favourite FE games, they're simple to play, while being highly customizable due to their massive casts, free reclassing, and bevy of difficulty options, also being able to forge any of your weapons is massive from a gameplay perspective and greatly contributes to the immense replayability of these games. Shadow Dragon especially is the most "Fire Emblem" game there is due to how clean the gameplay can be, the mechanics largely being stripped down to the core of how all of the games in the series play, and its well-written (especially those houses, they're shockingly full of personality for essentially being optional tutorials and chapter hints) but simple and to the point story and dialogue, it's just a great game all around and one of my most replayed games alongside the Tellius duology.

Yeah the Archanea series and Tellius series are my all-time favorites in the franchise. I'd include Jugdral in the list but I haven't actually played FE4 and FE5 yet; I'm waiting for a possible remastered version for them.

My favourite thing about this game was allowing you to hold onto the Starsphere if you're willing to accept the consequences of that. I, for one, enjoyed having Navarre delete everything from the map with his ridiculous forged Wo Dao that never breaks.

Shadow Dragon was my third FE game after Sacred Stones and Blazing Sword, and I've never once found myself disliking it. I always thought the pacing was very fast and I mean that in the best possible way, I've loved the OST and the way it handles the split screen of the DS, I think menuing is well designed and the way it handles reclassing is fun, even if it isn't my favorite in the series. For an experimental new mechanic, it did very well. The common complaints of Shadow Dragon are the story and supports and graphics but honestly they never bothered me. Being relatively new to FE, I honestly didn't even realize supports were missing until I heard someone bring it up. Like you said, there are enough of personalities for you to build from, I think the story, basic as it is, still is pretty enjoyable, and I'm in the camp that thinks the DS era actually had some pretty good graphics. The only thing I never really liked was some of the flying classes' animations, but that's a very minor complaint. Overall they were good I felt. The game doesn't get enough love. It did so much so well. Mid map saves make such a bigger impact to your gameplay over turnwheels, the music and sound effects are excellent, among the best in the series, the map design was surprisingly good for being based off a game from 30 years ago, and the gameplay never feels cumbersome and that's no small feat. I'm a huge fan of FE11! If I had to pick out one thing to complain about, it would be the lack of enemy diversity which leads to the overwhelming dominance of forged class effective weaponry. I mean, "if game is too easy just don't use the wing spear 5-head" is valid, but still I would have liked the game to try harder to balance out the weapons. Despite that, it is still better at it than some other games in the series. And honestly FE12 did that by adding a lot of different dragons and I hated it so maybe we're lucky FE11 is exactly like it is and we just don't know any better lol.

Personally I like Fe 12 a little bit more for the story and support, but Fe 11 is the perfect game to just pick and play and Ironman, I still remember my first Ironman in H5, basically killing all my units and using generics till the last chapter, and thanks to it's pretty fast and simple UI it didn't take long to reach the end and enjoy the chaotic ride of Killing the dragon with Gordin

I really like this game because it is one of the few Fire Emblem games that designs itself around the perma-death feature. The game throws you enough units and bones that losing a unit probably won't destroy a run. It's normal difficulty is very faithful to the original, but the higher difficulties are brutal and require specing units through the class change system. Overall it offers a lot of freedom and choice in how you play the game and doesn't lock you into resetting your game every time you make a mistake. Definitely one of the better Fire Emblems to just pick up and play in my opinion.

I'm actually fine with its animations. Sure GBA's are better but people are so focused on the cool animations that Fe11 doesn't have that they don't realize most of them aren't even that different. Also cavaliers' crit making the horse sound effect imo is much better than GBA's cavalier crit.

Nowadays, the go-to games for projecting personality onto characters are Dungeon Crawler RPGs. I think Demon Gaze Extra does it the best by having you design the side characters but also using their names to do off-screen activities like hanging around, recon or partying at the inn. Though I should warn newcomers that the game expects you to run meta and no, changing the difficulty isn't the way to go... because it is on the verge of changing nothing at all.

Fire emblem shadow dragon is bad because it does not possesses the funny stat boosters from fire emblem 1 and 3. I am sad. Intelligent system also removed some funi from Gaiden. This is why we can't have nice things. Anyway 14/10 game.

As someone who played the GBA Fire Emblem games and Path of Radiance before Shadow Dragon, I was pretty disappointed playing the game at launch as it removed a lot of the RPG elements and support convos that made the other games memorable. After a few years and seeing other FE entries since then, my opinion on Shadow Dragon has moderated somewhat and I've come to appreciate the simplicity and tighter tactical gameplay of Shadow Dragon. It's a good game if you just want the classic Fire Emblem experience without some of the crazier mechanics and lengthy social segments of the newer games. In my opinion, although Three Houses introduced a lot of interesting new ideas to the franchise, the map design took a big step back from earlier entries and is a lot more boring compared to Shadow Dragon (or other FE games, for that matter). I actually didn't finish Three Houses because I was steamrolling every map and it became repetitive, but I have completed Shadow Dragon on 5 star difficulty. Thinking about it now, I would much sooner replay Shadow Dragon than Three Houses, if I had to choose between the two.
